1964.....#1 U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #1 U.S. Cash Box Top 100, #11 UK Singles Chart, #3 Canada
Original video edited and AI remastered with HQ stereo sound.
The Shangri-Las were an American pop girl group of the 1960s. Between 1964 and 1966, they charted with several hits documenting teen tragedies and melodramas. They remain known for their hits "Remember (Walking in the Sand)", "Give Him a Great Big Kiss", and in particular, "Leader of the Pack", which went to #1 in the US in late 1964.
The Shangri-Las appeared as a quartet to promote "Remember", starting with their stint on the 1964 Labor Day Murray the K show in September. Shortly before the Shangri-Las went to the UK for the aforementioned promotional tour in Oct. 1964, Betty Weiss dropped out temporarily, leaving the group as a trio. She still is featured on the recording for "Leader of the Pack", which was recorded prior to the release of "Remember". The remaining trio went on to tour the US and also appeared on many TV shows, including Hullabaloo, Shindig!, Hollywood A-Go-Go, and Lloyd Thaxton. Many TV clips and photos of the group taken at this time (just Mary Weiss and the twins) circulated at the group's peak in popularity and beyond, which led many to recall the group being only a trio. Betty then rejoined the group in mid-1965 (her first return appearance with the Shangri-las was listed as a June 1965 Hollywood A-Go-Go Show episode hosted by Cousin Brucie in NYC), and the group appeared as a quartet once again until the start of 1966, when they permanently became a trio again (Mary Ann and Marge left at different times, replacing each other until the demise of the group).

Mary Weiss, the lead singer of the 1960s pop group the Shangri-Las, whose hits included “Leader of the Pack,” died on January 19, 2024.. She was 75. The Shangri-Las, formed in the New York City borough of Queens, were made up of two pairs of sisters: Weiss and her sister Elizabeth “Betty” Weiss, along with twins Marguerite “Marge” Ganser and Mary Ann Ganser. They met in school and as teenagers began performing at school dances and teen hops.

I believe this is Mary and Betty singing in unison on the lead vocal, sadly Betty isn't present, even more sad is Mary's passing yesterday. RIP.

It's one of those songs that surprises you with dialogue, that sets up the story, a story of youthful love, which ends in tragedy, a melodrama.💥 A teenager falls in love with the pack leader of a motorcycle gang, decides to leave him to please his father and the boy, after a motorcycle ride in the rain ends up crashing and losing his life. 💥The whole story is told as a nursery rhyme by Mary Weiss, lead singer of Shangri-Las while the others in the group imitate her. 💥Shangri-Las, one of Pop's (Punk-New Wave), most beloved girl groups was one of the foremost exponents of teenage angst, a group that avoids being glamorous and promotes the image of the tough girl. 💥Shangris - Las was a group of student sisters from Queens who began their singing career in talent shows , they would later strike gold with the collaboration of the eccentric Pop genius, George Morton.💥 It was one of the most acclaimed, successful songs at that time , personally reminds me of Amy Wirehouse, presents originality in the exposition, in the drafting of the entire story, from the interweaving of voices and noises that I can compare to the confusion of the adolescent period , a confusion that you carry with you once you finish listening to it. 💥Thanks for this novelty in style and writing, I think it's a rarity, to have it where it was a stroke of luck, thank you 😊😊😊..

Robert Goulet was as winsome as he was charismatic, not to mention modest since he was one of the best audience draws as a vocalist and comedian of his day....The Shangri-Las adorable!

Absolutely hilarious to watch Robert Goulet on that Chopper and trying to act as well as look like a young Marlon Brando. And, the girls were doing their very best to act out their own characters in snyc with the song's lyrics while trying not to burst out laughing during the whole set. I actually feel a little bit sorry for the Shangri La's in that they were probably made, per their contract, to do that show with all that silly stuff going on, thus distracting people from their musical abilities, and most of all from the song's lyrics which I think was intentional. At least they didn't have to wear something formal, like a tuxedo, and then sing to a dog, bassethound, like one very famous male singer was made to do for a TV show. Loved this song, and I really loved their song 'Remember". They were popular when I was in my teens. Oh, and my late sis, Geri, wore her up in those styles almost every day, and then I even wore my own hair up in a French Twist with Angel curls on top for special occasions like for my High School Junior Prom, and my Senior Class Yearbook Picture. Those were the days. It's sad that we don't have the girl groups like we had back then for they were so very talented singers, and added the extra vocal ranges in many songs which gave them that extra sound needed for perfection.

Using the older man on the little scooter was a way of mocking the theme of the song that kind of gloried the bad boy motorcycle rider. Leather jackets and bikes were frowned on in those days by the parents of the Boomers.
