I think the road module plates will actually be good for GBC modules: they're mostly smooth, larger than the minimum dimensions for an input, have holes in the portions for tiles (for an agitator), and look pretty structurally sound on their own.

I just started my lego city last year and these new road plates are just a major disappointment. One they are actually quite ugly, when all the tiles are visible like this. Two, they don't fit other lego sets that would be in a lego city; such as modular, which is frustrating. No sidewalks either, what has lego done?

Absolutely hilarious: LEGO is no longer compatible with LEGO. The prices for the old LEGO sets (7280, 7281,...) are currently doubled at Amazon and keep increasing until they are sold out. I believe the Chinese manufactures of more "traditional" street plates eg. Strictly Briks are celebrating this latest silly decision of the LEGO management.

I’m in a good place to start out with these new plates, I only have 2 modulars so far (I reckon I’ll be up to 4 within a week or so, and 5 if you count that Chinese New Year lantern festival set). One thought I had for raising the modulars was to use full bricks rather than plate stacks, (probably in the dark grey, if that’s feasible) that way the curb will be 2 plates over street level, which I think may look a little more correct. The other thought I had was that it would be cool to double up (or even triple up!) these new road plates width-wise, to get curb parking and perhaps more travel lanes. I could maybe scrub the crosswalk lines off that one half plate and use that to get a single additional lane’s worth of space. I’d like to see if I can use these to build a median or some green space into the middle of the road, I think that’d look very cool.

That's my situation as well. Was going to say something similar, if you have limited space these roads are better so you still have the amazing look of roads but not the huge space it takes with the old plates. From the perspective of a modular building collector, the previous road plates were junk; way too much pavement space, cheaply printed, and you had to buy a useless junction for each straight road plate. This new system is much much better. Not perfect yet, but definitely a step in the right direction.
@maxthrust976
@maxthrust976 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve been messing around with them for an hour now and I am really digging them! You’re right about the old plates having problems, and while these aren’t perfect (especially when it comes to meshing them with a modular city) they do solve several of the old plate’s issues. These new ones offer so much more flexibility! The stuff we can do with these is crazy, make roads wider by any number of lanes (even just one lane wider using the 8x16 plate), add medians and bollards and other stuff on top of the road surface. We could add cat’s eye reflectors instead of the printed white line tiles! It’s fantastic. Now what I want to see released is a pack of accessories for lane marking in both white and yellow, and more road signs!
@TimL_
@TimL_ 3 жыл бұрын
@@maxthrust976 Agreed, sounds like you're having fun. I may have been a little too harsh on the standard plates, because they do fit the modular building system better, but they had several disadvantages too, like not being able to make multiple-lane roads, as you mentioned. And yes, from a customization standpoint, the possibilities are endless with these new ones! My first thought too was median strips covered in foliage.

You can put the four together with the white line tiles down the middle and add shrubs and trees to the edges to create boulevards, avenues, or superhighways. Then also experimented with hinges and created hillside roadways and ramps. I used The gray 2x4 tiles to stack on top the single plates at the edges to widen the road by one and to attach the modulars. The only bad was I lost the curb and you couldn't tell where the road ended and the sidewalk began but then started using different grays to set those boundaries. There is a temptation to just add a few tiles to the bottom of the mods to lift for the curbs.

Looks very ugly, would be OK for Junior, but still. Why the grey tiles connecting to other pieces make road wider? This looks really bad. The idea of 2 normal baseplate high could work, but this doesn't make sense. Very ugly details... And those big pieces, ugh... Why they don't use normal big tiles? Why this zig zag shape 2 high? How to make a solid line on road? How to make a curve? Why put there a 50 traffic sign? What would normal people do with dozens of them? Lego, what have you done...

The look of the new plates is definitely better. And it is much more versatile. I think, the new system is great for kids who actually play with Lego rather than collecting and displaying it. Well if your buildings are already on mils plates, than it won’t really be a problem. So since my modulars (the few I have so far) are 2 bricks high off the base plates, it would allow for me to mil the new roads as well. Now for someone just starting out, I would think the new roads would probably work out better in the long run, however, I know a lot of people have brick built roads and thus that would probably continue to be the way they go about doing their roads. Real question is will they come out with other road designs in the future?

Thanks for the review. I was thinking of switching, since I’ve got a fairly small modular bldg city.. with very limited space. I’ve always found that the curbs on the baseplate roads were excessive and used up a lot of real estate.. and I didn’t want to spend the money for a gazillion tiles to create huge sidewalks. To raise my modulars.. I’m probably just going to slide my old road plates or other baseplates loose underneath my modulars... that should give my modulars a tiny height advantage over the new roads, barely creating a curb.
