Instead of a dedicated Steam Train theme, LEGO should just have a dedicated "Trains" theme. Why are trains apart of the City theme anyway? With a dedicated Trains theme you could do steam trains ( european style, wild west style, etc ) as well as trains from different eras ( bring back the Santa Fe Super Chief! ). But, I agree with selling engines and cars separately ( also train themed buildings like passenger/cargo stations, roundhouses, etc ). Honestly, LEGO could approach the Train theme like Speed Champions. Each engine/car could be based on a real vehicle.

What you've done here is replicated the LEGO Group's foundational product on a larger scale - you've created a system. By separating track, locomotives and carriages, each purchase adds more and more scope to what you can make, thus making every new one more appealing and adding value to every older one - and since the barrier to entry would be lower, that cycle would begin far more easily than it otherwise might. There are fundamental strengths to the concept in terms of both business sense and brand alignment from the LEGO Group's own perspective; let's hope that they're thinking along similar lines!

You know, a steam loco wouldn't have to be unpowered. A small Power Functions motor and a basic geartrain powering one of the axles will fit within the gauge of LEGO train track, and the remaining drive wheels can be driven via connecting rods. You're not forced to use the train motor blocks.
@acynder12 жыл бұрын
They could add a smaler or more modular train motor block so you could make diferent locomotives winout wasting excesive space in motoring. In fat if memory doesnt fail me, the standar motor block is a few studs too short to aceept a x-6-x (or x-3-x) wheel set. That could be changed by making it a shorter one powering just one axle and gain a lot of modularity.

Actually "powered tender pushed locomotive" has become quite common with steam engines in conventional model railroading (think Roco, Trix or Märklin). One of the advantages is that the tender is a closed box anyway while they can offer more detail and even places to "look across" between the frame and boiler on the loco if there's no mechanical feed between the engine and wheels straight down as there would be with the engine in the boiler. Usually the locomotive is still heavy enough to run fine through turns and everything. (Granted, some just have the motor in the tender and drive both tender wheels and locomotive wheels via a propshaft)
@pilotbug61002 жыл бұрын
For example the hornby Gordon was tender powered
@scottthewaterwarrior Жыл бұрын
I have used tender power in both my LEGO steam locomotives, it's a lot easier then trying to do a ton of complex gearing into the drive wheels. Also using Big Ben Bricks drive wheels, which I got before the introduction of the traction bands, so powering them through the locomotive would have just been wheelslip simulator 9000!

As a older collector, I have pretty much all of the LEGO train related products since the late 80's. The train community is a niche market within the current business model. The licensed themes dominate the market and some of the more traditional themes have drifted away. Trains, Pirates and Castle have all suffered with either no product line or dumbed-down products with off-sized pieces and awkward looking builds. As far as trains are concerned, there are several third-party track and model providers that have some high quality products that offer a lot of opportunities for the LEGO train enthusiast.

I think there's enough of an interest in trains to for them to be their own product line. So I'd like to see Lego separate the trains from their City line and give them an independent line. City can still have rail vehicles, but maybe limit it to smaller things like trolleys/trams, light rail, and monorail. Perhaps part of this hypothetical Lego train product line would be "Upgrade kits", parts packages people can use to upgrade pre-existing Lego sets (i.e. "Emerald Night Upgrade Kit", "Hogwarts Express Upgrade Kit", etc.).
@sethkeller77763 жыл бұрын
Honestly I love this idea. My biggest beef with how Lego has handled trains is their thought of American Steam being only the 4-4-0 or 4-6-0, and how they considered a theme park train a steam train. There is such a variety of American steam and they haven't even breached the smallest subset. I'd love to see some USRA Pacifics, some articulated locomotives, or basically any streamlined loco. Second to me is the issue of not selling individual rolling stock and track. It just isn't cost effective to buy Lego branded track when they sell it in the packs they do, and trying to find more passenger cars for my 60197 or for the Emerald Night is basically impossible. Alongside all that, extra side buildings would be fun and a nice addition. Good video, let's make it happen! (On a side note, I'm envious of you guys in the UK, you've done a much better job preserving your beautiful steam locomotives, and I would love to visit sometime and see them in person)

I know some people will have a sour taste in the mouth but considering whats already out there in the open market with custom parts.. Make the investment... Buy a reasonable resin printer and make those custom pieces you really want and move along. LEGO will never do this again after the HORRIBLE release of this Idea they did back in the double 00's. that Steam set was SO bad that they not only should have fired that designer but they should have locked him or her in Prison for such a HORRIBLE set.

Please do not take this as I do not love the idea you have.. I'd sell my soul if they did.... just saying that you might see unicorns first.

the funny thing is, LEGO used to have a product line for Trains like you're describing. I think it was called "My own Train". You could buy different Wagons for Cargo or passengers, there where Different Steam trains for which you could also buy different color schemes and also Straigt and crurved tracks in seperate sets if i remember correctly.

WE NEED MORE STEAM TRAINS! I strongly agree with you and all of your great ideas and designs, we realy do need wider curves and individual carriages. keep up the good work and I hope you make another video on this topic.
@apage17653 жыл бұрын
Was dubious going into the video, but wow what a well thought out argument. Got my son the city train last Christmas and it annoyed me that if I wanted another carriage it would be a new set. Also why don’t Lego have a cross over piece? I ended up moc’ing one to do the job. Selling individual parts to a train is great, and I hope someone takes note of your presentation, very good.
@timesnewlogan20322 жыл бұрын
Anyone else remember “My Own Train”, where you could get a variety of steam trains in different colors? Back in the early 2000s, the Trains had several pages to themselves in the LEGO Magazines. Now they’re lucky to get half a page at all.

I want a D2C either Flying Scotsman or Mallard! I’d buy one of those in a heartbeat. They could release the Scotsman set and include instructions to make the classic version or the new 2015 version thats currently on the tracks 😃

Love this idea. When LEGO did something like this years ago I thought it was really well received in the LEGO community and has baffled me why they haven't gone back to doing something like this considering people would rush to buy these type of sets off the shelves. Strange business tactic

If that was the case, they're company would not exist as it is today. They are already beginning to feel the hurt of not having anything military as more & more people turn to COBI, Mega Blox, etc. The problem is that we're willing to make videos, not email the proper people. It's all supply & demand, or in fancy talk, logistics.

A set like the Emerald Night but with separately sold sets for expanding a train would be an absolute dream come true. Not only would the Locomotive and Tender being sold separately from individual pieces if rolling stock help to cut down the cost but also give Customers more options so that they can buy specifically what they want without having to be forced to buy a set that includes something they don't care about just to get the essential main builds. I would personally prefer some bright and colorful like Southern Pacific Daylight or the Blue Comet. But oh man alive how I would love to see a New York Central Dreyfuss Hudson Streamliner with that beautifull Fin Crest and 6 holed driving wheels. Or even a Pennsylvania Railroad GG1 Electric locomotive or one of Japanese Shinkansen Bullet trains, proving that it doesn't have to just be the steamers of old and can appeal to different cultures all over the world. Heck, that could be a whole new line similar to Speed Champions for real world cars except for famous and obscure trains from throughout world history. I mean can you imagine just how amazing of a job the could do for that one Chesapeake and Ohio Steam Turbine Engine with all the small and and triangular and wedge shaped pieces that they've introduced in just the past 3 years? There have been so many advancements since 2019 alone.

It would be pretty amazing if Lego did more steam trains and made some really iconic ones for Lego sets. This would be a major change especially with people wanting to create their own Lego world. Imagine having Lego sets of famous steam trains like The Flying Scotsman, Mallard, Big Boy, and Norfolk & Western, just to name a few
@Jamiewaldie19923 жыл бұрын
Lego need to do some of the famous steam trains. I would be there for a Lego Mallard, Flying Scotsman, Duchess Of Hamilton and especially for a Union Pacific Big Boy. Yes, they'd be expensive but how many enthusiasts would still buy it? the rolling stock idea is good too. As you said, making up a full train without it being part of a pre-existing kit is difficult. Official Lego goods and passenger cars would be fantastic. As you also said, the massive diversity of Lego brick colours would mean that you could build all the different A4 pacific variants such as Mallard, Sir Nigel Gresley, Bittern, Dominion Of Canada, Silver Link, etc.. The possibilities are right there, they just need to do a little bit of designing. Come on Lego, give us what we want!

I find it so funny you said “you had an emerald night but cannot find it in your house”. When I was about 11 my parents bought me it, I am 100% certain I owned it, but I cannot find it. Now I’m in your exact same spot of debating to put like $800 into getting a new one sealed. Worth it, but I need to sell some retired kits to fund it!

The Bricklink Designer Program is essentially doing what you’ve presented here! They just sold out of the new train shed. However, we have a whole logging train set and a modular train station coming down the pipeline! That aside, I do plan on making the locomotives you have presented in this video!
