Why the blocks of (I presume) concrete on carriages before andafter it? I understand it came through the Channel Tunnel. It's ok - just read from another channel - it's because they're unpowered (no 3rd 4th rail) there's no brakes. So the "concrete" carriages help with that.
@junovzla2 ай бұрын
if they were delivered through the channel tunnel that's pretty cool talk about delivering trains by rail
@elishabee22 ай бұрын
The two wagons also act as "match wagons" (aka barrier vehicle, translator vehicle) - the couplers on the underground stock are at a different level. When the stock is delivered, the two wagons are joined using the low level couplings and travel around as a pair until the next transfer.

@yourfriendlyneighbourhoods82022 ай бұрын
They have 5 long carriages and 4 short ones. I believe they will be slightly longer than the ‘73 stock but not too a point where major platform extensions would need to take place, a few minor ones may have
@Steve_McMillen2 ай бұрын
Anyone know why the carriages are different lengths?
@reececollison51012 ай бұрын
Yes, it’s to do with the bogeys and making the train lighter. On the ‘73 stock they have 12 bogeys, two on each carriage. These new ones have 10 bogies, 2 on each of the 5 larger carriages. Then to evenly distribute the distance of the bogeys, they inserted 5 small ‘intermediate’ cars that don’t have bogeys, to make it train lighter overall
@junovzla2 ай бұрын
@@reececollison5101in case anyone's wondering why they didn't simply use Jacobs bogies (as I was) it's because the trains floor is quite low, so the wheels have to poke into the train and are hidden by the seats (that's the reason why the older stock has such an interesting arrangement of the sliding doors) and if they had used Jacobs bogies there would've had to have been a step between the carriages as the floor would have to be higher there, and given that the headroom is already pretty tight that would mean the carriages couldn't have open gangways, so they looked at tram-trains for a solution instead
