Edward Gal and Total U.S. have become the overnight leaders in the Grand Prix division at the 2021 Dutch Dressage Championships which are taking place behind closed doors at the KNHS headquarters in Ermelo, The Netherlands, on 4 - 6 June 2021.
Just like in Balve the scores were heavily inflated in Ermelo as is the tradition of national championships anywhere in the world. The all-Dutch judging panel (just like the all-German panel in Balve) just loves its own riders, horses and style, and assesses mistakes, lack of harmony and bridle contact less skeptically in a 20 x 60 arena on home turf.
The first round of the Championships - the Grand Prix Special - was judged by Adriaan Hamoen, Janine van Twist, Maarten Van der Heijden, Mara de Bel Groenenboom, and Jeannette Wolfs.
Newly frocked in a custom made tail coat, Edward Gal can arrive at any competition feeling safe that he will be generously rewarded for the phenomenal ground quality of his horses, no matter what is produced in the arena. Edward's new tailcoat was heavily discussed on social media yesterday and although its cavalry style might not be everyone's cup of tea, the fact that Gal changes things up and plays with fashion within the allowed boundaries of the FEI should be applauded ! Why not play a bit with the traditional dresscode?! We like it.
Not the more mature and settled Grand Prix horse Toto Jr (by Totilas x Desperados) but the younger and even bigger moving Total U.S (by Totilas x Sir Donnerhall) took highest honour in the Grand Prix Special with an enormous 81.128%. The judges' scores ranged from 79.468 (Wolfs) to 83.404 (De Bel). Total U.S showed huge ground cover and scope in the trot extensions and half passes, always uphill oriented. The passage was not always evenly engaged with more right hind leg activity at times, but there was much suspension. The extended walk had massive overtrack but is not marching through the body and in the collected walk the young stallion was tense. The piaffes were on the forehand (but he scored a 10 for that). The stallion's immaturity at the highest level shows in his unsteadiness in the connection and head position throughout, and especially in his lack of self-carriage, most visible in the canter part. The horse moves in two pieces, often losing the 3-beat stride, and the flying changes are unbalanced. However, in the pirouettes he reveals that the ability to collect is definitely there. The final halt could be more polished and square (8 - 9).
Gal placed second with Toto Jr. The black stallion made his 2021 CDI debut in Opglabbeek, Belgium, in May, where he was also beaten by stable mate Total U.S. even though the horse is more complete and settled at Grand Prix level. In Ermelo, the stallion gave his rider a handful, starting with a big booboo right before entering the arena, where the horse became unruly and Gal needed a few circles to get him back together. The live streaming strategically moved the camera away from what happened and just focused on the faces of the bystanders. The entry and halt still earned him 7.2. The first trot extension was too conservative, the others on the track much better, although the left one needed more overstep. The trot half passes were scopey and balanced, the first transition to passage was almost on the spot via piaffe. The passage was lovely with much airtime and regularity. Toto Jr has quite a chunky stallion neck and Gal did keep the nose out as best as possible, even though he rides the horse virtually on a blank curb. Sometimes the horse tilted to the right. The extended walk was outstanding with superb clarity in the 4-beat rhythm, it was the absolute highlight of the test (7.5 - 9). The collected walk, then again, was not collected at all but a medium walk (7 - 7.5). The piaffe work was not that good today with the horse not taking the weight behind but piaffing with the hocks up and out. The rhythm was good though. In the passage on the serpentines (and final centerline) he swung a bit in the body. In the tempi changes the horse got a bit sticky to the aids, not moving in front of the leg, which resulted in a lack of straightness (7.0). Gal regenerated the impulsion with good extended canter, the pirouettes were tiny and could use another stride. While the horse showed plenty of quality, there were numerous imperfections, the final passage on the centerline was a bit crooked, the piaffe at X had the hindlegs out.
The judges rewarded this ride with on 79.681%; four judges had him second (low score 78.298%) and one judge first (81.170%). Gal's skeptical face at the end of the test did not correspond with the whopping score he got.

Unbelievable how many points he got for this disastrous performance. Hurts the eyes and the heart to watch this extremely beautiful horse being ridden like that. I have seen a lot of bad performances by Gal, but this one almost takes the cake. This should all be filed away under 'do not train your horse like that'.

I totally agree 😪💔. The worst thing is, this horse has all of the potential, with the right rider. Does Gal actually think he's TRULY GOOD? Could he pull that head any tighter 😠 poor thing is concentrating on trying to breathe more than move . With a good rider, wow it would be such a pleasure to watch! Charlotte where are you???

As a Dutch I am truly ashamed of almost everything that happened at the championship.. Don't get me wrong, there are some riders that are not hard to watch. (Like Thamar Zweistra, Patrick van der Meer, Vincent van Gasselt and sometimes Dinja) But almost every rider that still stands a chance to make the Dutch Olympic team is just painful to watch. I don't even know what is going on with Total in those tests.. In almost every gait he gets irregular regularly. In piaffe and passage he has often one leg on the ground, some of his pirouettes are even ridden in 4 strides in a 4 beat, that almost turns into a 3 beat again (due to his hindlegs..) I saw some pictures (yeah i know.. pictures don't tell the whole story) where he was almost in rollkur during a test.. Some riders made it look like a wrestling competition. I watched most of Balve as well and the difference is unbelievable.. In Ermelo practically every horse was around 75% of their test behind the vertical. Let's start there, mark every exercise at least 2 points lower when it is performed behind the vertical.

Well, can tell you that confronting Glock leads them to insulting you. Me and some other person questioned why they had Total US behind the vertical and they were like "Who are you to judge Edward Gal? Look at your own riding" and then they fucking linked one of my instagram posts. I would have gladly had a civil discussion with them but they seemed to rather go the bad path

I too agree with all of you. At on point I could sit and watch some of Totilas on video and think what a gorgeous, talented horse. That perception of him has never changed. What has changed is my knowledge now of how he was trained and riden, and thoughts about what he could have done with say a ridder/trainer team such as Charlotte du Jardine and Carl Hester! And then to watch Totilas 's decline in the end was just gut wrenching. Horses don't pick their people, and it's sad to see what some do to their horses for their own glory. I remember when, I believe it was Dressage Today, did an expose on Anky Van Grunsven, explaining what the Rollkur training process was with many pictures from an indoor ( thought she was in private) and she was absolutely furious about it! Who were these people who invaded her private training session or to criticize her from of training? It wasn't very long after that exposure that she disappeared from the Dressage world and apparently went into Reining I heard. She supposedly had accomplished her goal in Dressage with her last horse being Salinero,a 6 or 8 year old Hanoverian the she got " because he had some issues ". It wasn't very long before he was her Olympic mount on whom she won another Gold medal. Now we knew why. Rolkur or Rollkur was all of the Dutch teams training method! How sad and totally against Classical Dressage training, which is slower and gradually builds the horse's physical and mental strength in order to rise up to the pinnacle of Grand Prix. Unfortunately this kind of hurried and in some ways brutal training happens with the young, gorgeous and inherently talented horses. Disgusting!! Just my opinion.

Its horrible. Makes me so sad. I trained in Germany for three years and this is exactly what I was warned against. Too round in the neck (broken neck) poll not the highest point, front leg flailing in the "extended" trot (working trot at best). No over track!!! none!!! how is that correct? If the rider had let go of the reins (ueberstreichen) I think the horse would have fallen over! We really can't be angry at the riders and trainers if the judges reward such bad training. The judging must change and the riding/training will follow suit. Once the old guard is gone and Klimke is one of them we are screwed. We might as well start up our very own dressage club that uses the old rules and benchmarks. I still have the old FEI papers that describe exactly how things are supposed to go and look like.
@janets6474
@janets6474 2 жыл бұрын
What we each need to do is contact the FEI. Keep bringing it into the light. But the other riders should be calling them out and complaining to the FEI as well. Isabel Werth is another. She can't even ride. She is so stiff from the rigid hold on the mouth she ends up bouncing out of the saddle. Lower level students can ride better than that! The last ride I saw her in she was doing a downward transition and was thrown forward, yet she scored higher than Charlotte D. How is it fair to riders like her who ride dressage in the correct way? But it's also the responsibility of every rider to call out this kind of abusive riding; not because of any score they may get but because of the well being of the horse.

Ok. I'm not sure who wrote the description here but the remark about his horses grounded movement is balderdash! The horses head is stuck by the complete stranglehold he has on the reins - the mouth. In over 75% of this test his horse is behind the vertical. He is not soft and supple thru the back; it's particularly noticeable in the piaffe. I don't know what he scored but anything was too high because of the obvious discomfort of the horse and his obvious use of rollkur. His legs have the grip of death on his horse. Typical Rollkur: Stop up all the energy and forward motion with the bit and then put the squeeze on the horse to make him go forward. Again, when will the FEI put an end to this training method and dismiss a rider from competition with use of it. I don't get it. It goes against everything dressage is SUPPOSED to be. Here he is in a " training video" . kzbin.info/www/bejne/e4GyaauCe9JnkLs First thing is his inside hand us holding her to the inside. Wait, isnt it the inside leg to outside rein? Then the key words " she wants to go forward to much ". Isn't that the use of a half halt using the leg seat and outside rein? ( closing of fingers NOT pulling the head in.) Of course the horse is flat and inconsistent in the gait. The longer the ride goes on the worse the horse gets. His solution is to keep doing what he's doing. Common sense says if WHT you are doing isn't working how can you expect a different result? So he keeps pushing her into a hyper flexed neck with the head behind the vertical . This also results in the lowering g of the poll when it should be the highest point. When he starts the canter it is flat and the horses hind end gets squirrely. One thing I remember Hester & DuJardin saying that it's important to not interfere with the horses natural gait. The purpose of dressage is to strengthen the horse so it enhances the gaits. Slowly trying the horse thru half halts and forward movement. Gal's horse is being forced into a position he thinks and wants it to be in. Maybe his horse keeps " running forward " is to get away from him.

What we need to do is start calling them out; starting with the FEI. This was an email I wrote to them last week. "After making numerous comments on You Tube videos of horses in the upper levels, I felt compelled to write your organization. If you see something, say something! There has been an increase of issues with horses during a test. Prior to a test, in the warm up. Riders and trainers who use the rollkyr method are using a method which is abusive to horses. Then we have judges rewarding this behavior by giving these riders favorable scores when even the simplest horse layman can see the artificial nature of the horses back neck, throughness, cadence and impulsive. These horses are not relaxed. There was one individual who was schooling at a show and the horses tongue was blue. We have Anky on videos teaching rollkur and what a wonderful training method it is. We have Isabel werth using this method as well. Her riding was atrocious as she bounced on the saddle never really having a connected seat. Yet judges are giving her the high marks. On fact there we'll might have been others who shoukd have come up higher in the standings. The art video I saw was horrible. The changes were jerky. So much so it threw her forward. Her horse was flat, hollow backed, behind the vertical, and other things. She was scored higher than Charlitte DuJardin who rode an almost flawless test. While I have never heard Charlotte openly say anything, I submit to you she was robbed of ranking in that test. One can only come to a conclusion that judges are political or incompetent. It's time you reject this type of training. When a rider and horse are clearly distressed, judges should be excusing riders from the test. Then, follow up with owners, riders and trainers about the infraction. People at this level should be held to a higher standard. Judges should also take some time to walk through the barns and watch warm ups and training sessions. This is how you catch people in the acts of abuse. It's time your organization condone all types of abusive behavior on horses. It's time to stop it! For good! By the way, I saw McClain Ward at a show in Lake Placid. He was in a small training paddock away from the crows. As the horse jumped the fence they smacked it on the belly with a rod. Supposedly, this keeps the horse from hitting the jump. This is also abuse. I guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. (His dad). " If everyone, including the riders started a ruckus, maybe even boycotting shows, see how fast the FEI changes their tune.

Poor thing. Flailing limbs and absolute lack of self-carriage. This is not a horse I ever would have thought would be the preferred type for dressage as it takes a tremendous amount of work to get all the parts working all together. He would stand half a chance, I’m guessing, if he had been trained more slowly and always in a snaffle.

@@janets6474 Try reading carefully and using critical thinking skills. The horse has been brought to a level he has not been prepared for by a rider never known for patience or subtlety. To scream what I was saying, he should have been trained by someone other than Edward Gal. I haven’t watched a second time, but Gal usually uses the curb rein nearly continuously. This is much easier than using only a snaffle for purposes of control. If a proper rider/trainer had this horse from the beginning, they could respond to a horse losing contact with a snaffle, and the curb wouldn’t be introduced until that wasn’t a problem. This horse is nowhere near ready for this level. Gal was sitting on that left rein the whole test. Was he just trying to hold the horse together? Very little self carriage, no fluidity, no gracefulness, only momentary collection in the collected movements. There's potential but only if this horse is allowed to develop - not just physically but mentally. Rider and horse are just not in anything close to harmony. Sad to see that this is "the top" of any dressage championship. I wonder if their scores are inflated by virtue of the relationship to a big name in the family.

God, how awful. At now point was there any harmony in this ride. The only thing that makes this look good for the untrained eye, is the spectacular leg action of the horse, which it probably was born with - that is not Edward Gal's doing. Neither the horse (which isn't its fault) nor the rider understand the purpose of the movements they are performing. This Piaffe is not a Piaffe, it is a desaster! And the horse isn't even able to perform the simplest of lessons, standing with its feed correctly placed beneath its body at the beginning and the ending of the performance. Again, not the horse's fault! I can't fathom how somebody like Edward Gal is allowed to ride like this and ruin another horse. I can't fathom how judges are so blind or so uneducated they give Gal's performances high scores!

It seems like political dressage to me. The top riders from Germany, Netherlands and some other Europeans just want the win and will do anything to the horse to get them there - fast. It's time to start telling these judges to start judging fairly or don't be a dressage judge. We all need to keep pressure on the FEI to force changes. Because we will be the only voices for the horse who is subject to constant abuse. What is wrong with the other riders. Regardless of the assumed commarodery between riders. It's time to put aside politics and start calling these people out. There is strength in numbers. It makes me sick to see it. Anyone who has taken a training level test can see what's going on here. I'd rather see a horse going around on his front end than watching this torture.

It is interesting to see Gal and I sadly have to agree with most of the comments. This wasn't a good performance. I believe that the hard hand resulted from the "need" to get a little more control of what's happening there. I have seen better from Gal. What most people here forget is that it's perhaps not his decision to show the horse on this level but the owners choice. Sometimes the rider has to make the best of a difficult decision and I hope that there will be a decision to give this truly stunning horse more time to grow into the champion he can be. 🍀

WRONG!!! This horse is trained all wrong. He has a vice grip on his mouth and the grip of death with his legs. This is abusive. His head is behind the vertical which stops the free, supple, strong movement and being thru the back. It's clearly evident in the piaffe. But all the other gaits are affected as well.
