New Malian Unit Makes No Sense!

I think the idea of the freeborn is not to actually counter range but to mix them in with musafadi warrior so that the melee infantry of Malian can be more tanky towards archers and crossbows. Like in the late castle age onwards when you have a ball of them it’s harder for archers to aim for specific units one at a time. Now Malian is generally weak to archers and keeps since the melee infantry donso and musafadi all has no range armour.
