Yes, we use a 701HDV on a 560 monpod just for the tilt feature. These small heads with a decent monopod work well together.

The 502HD will give you variable friction adjustments (many speeds). The 500AH is a fixed fluid drag (one speed). The ergonomics of the 502 is a bit weird, but not impossible to work with. Unless you require really fast panning or are working with very heavy cameras, the MVH500AH is a very nice tripod and I use this a majority of the time.

The bowl mount head needs a bowl mount tripod (and has to be the correct size bowl). In this setup the MVH500A is on a tripod that has a built-in half ball type adjustment on the center column.

Both heads offer only fixed drag (not variable). Go the Manfrotto route if you need to work with quick release systems. They have one of the most common QR plates on the market so you can move your camera around to different mounts.

I just purchased the mvh500a head with the tripod that came with it. I'm having difficulties trying to figure out how to attach a slider or jib to the tripod since I can't seem to take apart the ball on the head to do anything with it so I just have this fluid head with a giant screw sticking out of it.

Static Heart Productions The tripod here uses a 'half ball' or 'bowl mount'. Those items you are trying to use work with standard flat base tripods or standard flat base fluid heads. If you really really want to get something working you'll need a 'half ball' or 'bowl adapter' that is the correct size to match and mount one under the slider to put on this tripod, and mount one 'ON TOP' of the Slider to mount your video head. Honestly I suggest looking at a different tripod and head to make life easier. They sell this same head with a standard 'flat base'.

How would you say this head compares with the Weifeng 717AH head? Im a video beginner looking to put together a fluid head and tripod legs combo on a budget and was planning on getting the weifeng 717AH head but since this one is only about $50 more at the moment due to the rebate I might consider getting it. One will offer more height (tripod with center column), one will offer more stability (tripods without a center column just half ball). The Half Bowl (or ball) is an easy way to level the camera without fussing with each leg.

I suggest the cheaper one just for monopod use since fluid panning won't really be used. Panning on a monopod happens at the foot not at the head. Tilting will also be compromised when used on a monopod.

You can level the head using the half ball. Without a half ball you have to level the head from the legs of a tripod.

One is a bowl mount and one is flat base. So it depends on your tripod. If you have a typical screw on style, then you'll need the flat base.

Moving the tilt handle does not change the position of the tilt lock, tilt drag nor the pan lock. I have this video head, and the ergonomics truly suck. Poor design...

Hello, since you seem to own or have tried many fluid heads. I have the 500AH, if I level using the bubble which is poorly located causing parallax error unless viewed through the slots in the bridge, pan 90 deg., it's no longer dead center level. Is this common to most all bubble levels on fluid heads or is mine flawed?

Yes, that is called a leveling base. You can place an adapter on top of your flat mount tripod and then place your fluid head on top of the adapter. It will give you quick leveling of the fluid head without touching the tripod legs: goo.gl/ON6s6Z
