I think an important thing shown here is that you don’t always walk away with a harvest…. Too many hunting videos show that “if you use this formula, you WILL harvest an animal” and thats just not realistic. Awesome stuff! Harvest or not! You guys really know what you’re doing

Keep doing what you're doing, learning by seeing it done, books, experiences. Being an active part of nature and the food chain is so very rewarding. Success is found in just doing it, beyond taking an animal, obviously that's the goal but appreciating the animals and their environment is deep, soul stirring stuff. Important note: As Cal shows, don't take the shot if the shot angle is not right. Good to see trad bow. For me, trad gear really helped me slow down and concentrate on shot placement, but that mentality should hold regardless of weapon. Best of luck to all who seek to harvest their own food and appreciate wild places. Good for the soul.

Had this happen last season early. In the elk every day but they didn't want to play. Ended up setting up 100 yds off the bedding area at daylight and go them to come check me out. Found myself in the middle of 50+ cows with no shot. Didn’t harvest but it was a great learning experience.

That's exactly how my first hunting trip went a couple years back only in muzzleloader season and I wasn't as fortunate to see anything until after the last day then they lined up on the side of the road to see me off LOL. At least I know this happens with experienced hunters too. What unit is that? Mine was 41 deer

@@D_BooneUnfortunately getting into hunting in not a simple thing. It is a lot more complicated to get into then the vast majority of hobbies. Depending on where he/she lives, it may be really tough to find a spot to legally hunt.

@@bluesteel8376 Not really. Most states have a lot of public land. Depending on the state, you might not be able to be out chasing elk right away, but all states have some way to easily start hunting. Small game is super easy to get into, waterfowl can be easily accessible, Turkey is really just a matter of buying some cheap camo outer shells (you can hunt in a camo longsleeve in the spring) and learning to call. New hunters often fall into the trap of wanting to jump right into the most technical and demandiing hunts right away.

When I don’t get picked for a tag I still go out during the rut with my son and dad just to call and enjoy my favorite animal. I didn’t get picked this year so I’ll be in the Gila next month doing what I love. Great job guys, we only focus on the chance to be near these animals not just the harvest.

I know how archery hunting for elk in the mountains can go, it can get very frustrating with the crazy winds. The scenery was good, but this was probably the most boring archery elk video I’ve ever watched. I hope you have better luck on your next hunt.

Crazy that the meateater crew can get elk permits in New Mexico in back to back years like this as non-residents. The odds of them drawing like this in back to back years as non-residents is extraordinarily low. Unfortunately, the New Mexico model for elk permits allows some 45% of elk permits to be awarded to land owners and sold to the highest bidder, often times out of state hunters, robbing the residents of the ability to draw permits for animals owned by the citizens of the state. For a company that really espouses the benefits the north american model for wildlife management, they're really not doing a great job of doing this in the name of producing media.
