nice vid... it brings back memories... back in about 1989 I fished with Tony Rizzo, I caught about a 23" pike and he hooked it on a sucker rig, big single hook back then... I said "Id be surprised if that thing got hit".... Tony said "you might get the biggest surprise of your life!" nothing hit it :( ............. but this vid reminded me of that day and made me smile........ good job on a nice fish

Yeah, Minnesota has the same problem with stunted pike, as I'm sure you know. That was a healthy muskie, Robbie. Congrats!! Wild net job there but you got her in the boat and that's all that matters. Actually, I've said this before, I prefer the view from the bow mount camera to the chest mount camera. Why? Because so often with the chest mount all you see is hands and a reel. You don't really get to see the action like you do with the bow mount camera. That one gives a full field of view, just like we were in the boat with you. That being said, the audio from the chest mount is better though.

That was some awesome slow motion footage of that big girl jumping and throwing that pike. I used to musky fish the 715 back in the late 80s and early 90s and we used to catch some big fish on sucker's but have never used a pike. That was really cool. It sucks to see so many stunted pike though we caught some dandys on the Willow and Ole reliable Sweeney back then, but we caught tons of hammer handles too.

Fantastic video! Love seeing your excitement at every catch. As far as pike for bait goes, preditor/prey natural relationship! I don't see any difference between using pike, suckers, or pannies. Can't tell you how many times hammer handles have snagged my bluegills. Keep posting the awesome vids! Tight lines!
@davetheheretic2954 жыл бұрын
In Colorado, they stock Tiger Muskie to keep sucker and (probably) carp populations under control. With pike it depends. Some waters advertise it, others will pay you $20 for each pike you harvest. Years ago, someone illegally introduced pike to the Yampa river which hurt trout populations. Division of Wildlife came through, electroshocked the pike, and put them in a state park near me. Like you say, checks and balances. In general, the waters that brag about their trout want the pike gone.
@JeffVonH4 жыл бұрын
Hammer Handle pike are bred to be used as bait or pickled! The pike population has gone continuously up since I started fishing those lakes in 1985. Catching a pike used to be a surprise up there, now you get one or two every time you're out casting for muskies! The DNR will set limits and rules keep following those and likely the fisheries will stay in good shape! I believe you were fishing the lake where I caught my PB this summer.

@@brianluttmer3614 Oh, that's the only advice I've got. Most muskies will strike a topwater when porposing, so the ones you are after must be really finicky in what they eat. Hi Robbie: I have a suggestion for your Muskie outings. We’ll fish together. Since I’m 70+ I’ll catch small pike you can use for bait. Since you’re younger and stronger you catch 50” muskies. Is it a deal? Let me know when you want to go fishing.🤓 Stay safe, God Bless!
@DLH-ws2xy4 жыл бұрын
Great vid. Yeah ....Learn to flood the net....then let it swim in. Scooping is a bad habit. If it's well hooked ... What's the issue. My best is 3.....46 and a half inch. I prefer to Troll. You should troll those pike. Your giving those big ones to long to look. Make em want it bad. Speed is the key. In Virginia now you can't even keep one less than 48". Was always 42" Here 40" or better is an award fish. Add some trolling to your game.🎣🎣🎣 DLH1270 Muskie Expert VDGIF 2017 Hall of Fame 2017.

The solution is simple, stop killing any pike. The big pike will control the smaller pike as you proved in the previous video. If the pike are native, nature will do its own management. Just like canadian waters and Europe as well, I am always surprised about the lack of giant pike in the US compared to Canada. It can’t be the climate, here in Europe the biggest pike are caught (and released !) in the more temperate regions of the continent.

In Minnesota, there is a huge issue with pike destroying food chains. It'd be like cutting up a carp for catfish bait if you will.
@rfree28874 жыл бұрын
I know, that's where I've fished most of my life. I think the bigger problem with populations of different species is man's involvement. MN has plenty of lakes that every year they point to a different species as the current problem. Lakes ecosystems were fine till we started deciding what and how many should be in them. Fish eat fish and the strong reproduce.
@ibanez20104 жыл бұрын
@@rfree2887 That may be the case, but the problem is present and it's not just going to sort it itself out on its own. If you care about the future of our fisheries, it's time to act. Whether that is keeping more small pike or using them for bait. It hopefully won't have to be that way forever. The numbers just need to be drastically reduced and then the population will be small enough that nature CAN sort it out on its own.
