Asalam Aleikon, Regarding to the music in weddings: it is not allowed to have music in weddings, Only the playing of "doof" (tambourine) which is a shallow "small" drum. It is only allowed in {Weddings, Eid and the arrival of a family member who has been traveling for many years}. the doof is only allowed to women not men (If men do it, it is haram and considered to be Imitation of women which is a major sin). In wedding men get separated from women just like in salah. in women's part it is allowed to have the doof being played there, but not in the men's side. I wish I have cleared this issue u got

I will add to what you wrote. It's similar to tambourine in the sense that it is open from one of the sides. And different that it doesn't have coins on the edge of it. Moreover, as you have mentioned, it's permissable during celebrations. Yet, it's also permissable for men and women in the same way. Different scholar have different opinions on this point, nonetheless, it's most likely permissable because usually laws that are for men applied for women and visa versa, unless otherwise stated.

Hi bobby! I am a muslim from Singapura. I'm from South east Asia, and history of Islam spreading starting from Indonesia to the rest of Asia is by music. Music helped spread Islam teachings faster, and brings muslims together. As I am muslim who speaks zero arabic, and that could be said for most muslims who does not grew up in the middle east or learns arabic language, its a struggle to learn and remember a new language. Personally, I couldnt remember all 25 prophets names mentioned in the Quran unless I sing it! There's songs pertaining to Aisha ra (prophet saw wife) which described her relationship with the prophet saw. Its purely educational music. As per Imam Shafi'i school of thought, music is permissible if its in rememberance of Allah. For example Rahmatun Lil Alameen by Maher Zain, which praises the prophet Muhammad saw, for guiding us towards Allah, proud to be a follower of his sunnah and being a part of his ummah. Some said music in Islam is haram, because music is and could be the source of evil as it makes us develop certain emotions and influence our thoughts. I am sure you know there are songs out there that associate themselves with Satan. Different school of thoughts differ in opinions, so it is important to understand when a scholar comes out with a ruling, we need to understand the context of why and how they came up with that particular ruling. So it is important to know the difference, and in the Quran Allah said in Surah Al-Ma'idah 77 "O People of the Book! Do not go to extremes in your religion, other than in truth." Hope this helps!

14:41 Salam Bobby! This is a question that I, Myself, have asked for a while and still receive multiple responses. The truth is "Music" is a "gray area" within Islam. There aren't enough textual evidences, to support whether or not the Prophet ﷺ forbid or permitted certain instruments, so the scholars conclude music is at least Makruh (Disliked) or Haram (Haram). There were some instruments that weren't popular or around during his time, and when you go through different narrations, there are times he allowed it and times he didn't. Biggest example of allowing it is during Eid or Weddings. Though Muslim scholars claim this is the more dominant opinion, in order to know Music, one has to study it and practice it. This within itself is also debated amongst other scholars. To conclude, the default is SPECIFIC Music is Haram, and the others is permissible (Duf, The Flute or Tamborine). All in all, it's important to understand this and decide accordingly on how we act on it. In my opinion, I don't inherently see anything wrong with Music, however, I'm aware of how often I listen to it and the affects it has on me. And Allah knows best.

regarding music: TLDR: it's haram according to all 4 sunni schools, except singing without instruments (good content - men for all, women for women) and the handdrum for weddings and on Eid. Quran 31 : 6. And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah without knowledge, and takes it (the Path of Allah, or the Verses of the Qur'an) by way of mockery. For such there will be a degrading torment. Ibn Mas`ud (close companion) commented: "by Allah, this refers to singing." “[Allah said to Iblis:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allah's disobedience)…” [al-Isra 17:64] It was narrated that Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice” - his voice [the voice of Iblis/Shaytan] is singing and falsehood. Quran 25 : 72. And those who do not bear witness to falsehood, and if they pass by some evil play or evil talk, they pass by it with dignity. "From among my followers there will be some people who will consider zina (illegal sex), the wearing of silk, the drinking and the use of musical instruments, as lawful. And there will be some people who will stay near the side of a mountain and in the evening their shepherd will come to them with their sheep and ask them for something, but they will say to him, 'Return to us tomorrow.' Allah will asunder them during the night and will let the mountain fall on them, and He will transform the rest of them into monkeys and pigs and they will remain so till the Day of Resurrection." - Bukhari 5590 Exception: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon her and there were two girls with her who were beating the duff. Abu Bakr scolded them, but the Prophet ﷺ said: "Leave them, for every people has an 'Eid." - Nasai 1593 "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'What differentiates between the lawful and the unlawful is the Duff (simple handdrum), and the voice (singing) for the wedding.'" Nasai 3369, Nikah Abu Hanifah said: "it is not permissible to pay anything for singing and wailing. This is our view. And he said: musical instruments are the wine of the soul, and what it does to the soul is worse than what intoxicating drinks do." (Majmu’ al-Fatawa, 10/417) Ibn Abi Shaybah (may Allah have mercy on him) reported that a man broke a mandolin belonging to another man, and the latter took his case to Shurayh. But Shurayh did not award him any compensation - i.e., he did not make the first man pay the cost of the mandolin, because it was haram and had no value. (al-Musannaf, 5/395). Al-Baghawi (may Allah have mercy on him) stated in a fatwa that it is haram to sell all kinds of musical instruments such as mandolins, flutes, etc. Then he said: If the images are erased and the musical instruments are altered, then it is permissible to sell their parts, whether they are silver, iron, wood or whatever. (Sharh al-Sunnah, 8/28) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The prohibition only has to do with listening, not hearing. Hence if a man passes by people who are engaging in some prohibited kind of talk, he is not obliged to block his ears, but he should not listen unnecessarily. Hence the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not instruct Ibn ‘Umar to block his ears when he heard the shepherd’s flute, because he was not listening to it; rather he was merely hearing it." Peace be upon you, my brother. Regarding the issue of music, I would like to say that there is a great misunderstanding among Muslims who do not speak Arabic, as they do not differentiate between the ruling on singing and the ruling on music, because music in Islam is prohibited in all cases and is not permitted even in weddings or events, but the issue of singing is different among Muslim scholars, as some of them forbidden it and some say that it is only hated ( mkroh) based on the meaning of the words during singing, and this is a common mistake among non-Arab Muslims or those who do not speak Arabic because of the lack of distinction between the meaning of the word singing and music in Arabic. May God reward you with good.

The traditions of the Holy Prophet (saw). Rabi', the daughter of Mu'awwiz ibn 'Afra, said that the Holy Prophet (saw) came to me on the day of my wedding and seated himself on my bed just like other kith and kin. So our Ansar sisters began to play on 'Daf' (musical instrument) and sing in praises of martyrs of Badr. When one of the girls began singing in praise of the Holy Prophet (saw) he stopped her and asked to carry on singing as before. Firstly we need to differentiate between music and singing. As mentioned in the above hadeeth there is no harm in singing praises of martyrs or ethical words in general in a wedding. But any kind of musical instruments except the one sided Duff are totally prohibited whether in a wedding or anywhere else

10:43 regarding sports tournaments (and any contest/tournament as long as it does not have any haram element), you can even include a prize in the form of any type of halal wealth (even money if it is received in the halal way), with one condition: the funding for the prize should not be taken from the applicants/candidates. the halal way to include a prize in a contest or tournament is through a third/outside party (it could be from the organisers themselves and/or through outsourcing such as sponsors). similar to playing poker; playing poker is not haram if the prize/reward was not taken in the way of gambling/betting (gambling is basically that the winner would take the wealth of the loser[s] who risk their wealth for the game/contest/tournament).

Music in Islam is quite polarising. But according to one of the most respected scholar, Al-Ghazali in his book Music and Singing, music is not inherently good or bad but the conditions and circumstances would make the difference between it being halal or haram. One of the examples given was that a love song if heard by someone who is married, and it reminds him of his wife and deepens the appreciation and longing for her, who is halal for him, then it is halal for him. But that same love song if heard by someone who is not married and evokes a feeling towards someone who is not halal for him, like a girlfriend or any other girl, then that same song is haram for him. It is an interesting book that dives deeply into the philosophical and technical side of Islam along with the many layers Islam has to offer for those who has the capacity to do so. But the disclaimer is that at the end of the day, one has to be sincere and deeply aware of one’s own self when dwelling into the grey area. When in doubt, it is always safer to side with avoidance. By the way, I am a Muslim and a musician, and far from being perfect. I am also aware of my own bias and prejudices regarding this issue. So I hope that we can live with the sentiment of agree to disagree and pray may Allah grants ys mercy in our shortcomings and open our hearts to shows us the right path. Wallahualam.

Please provide a basis for which poetry is haram. Categorically, I have understood this to be incorrect; the Sahaba themselves engaged in forms of poetry. "The ruling on poetry is the same as the ruling on speech or words, of which it is a part. The well known, general principle is that which is narrated in Mursal ‘Urwah ibn al-Zubayr: 'Poetry is like speech: what is good is good, and what is bad is bad.”' If the poetry involves words of love to a specific woman who is not permissible for the poet, or encourages sin, then it is haraam poetry. But if it includes remembrance of Allah, blessings upon the Messenger of Allah, encouraging good qualities and good conduct, then it is poetry that is mustahabb and recommended."

Salam Alaykoum brother. I have 3 remarks: 1- Music IS haram, as far as instruments are concerned. This view is shared by the absolute majority of scholars of old (assalaf) and of today's world. One of the main arguments is this hadith: روى البخاري في صحيحه رحمه الله، عن أبي مالك أو أبي عامر الأشعري رضي الله تعالى عنهما، عن النبي ﷺ أنه قال: ليكونن من أمتي أقوام يستحلون الحر والحرير والخمر والمعازف ...in which the Prophet peace be upon him says that there will be groups (i.e an aweful lot) of his Umma that will indulge in instrument-based music (different from mere singing), alcohol, sex outside of wedlock and silk (men cannot wear silk). Note how all of these phenomenons go hand in hand in scandalous parties, orgies and places of evil. The cristalisation of materialism and hedonism. It is also very similar to alcohol in a way, not everyone gets necessarily drunk and commits crimes indulging in drinking, but those who do have their lives wrecked. Music, similarly, sways your heart, magnifies your emotions, whether they are bad or good, it intensifies one's anger (typical metal heads), sadness (those that binge listen to depressive music), sexual impulses (typical modern rap and pop) etc etc. Also, u will almost never meet someone hafidh of quran, intimately religious and indulging in music, and those who do, usually suffer from many akhla9 (character) issues. One exception would be "aduff" which is some sort of drum-like instrument to women in weddings. This was the only exception in hadiths for women. As for singing, there are many details, but usually it's okay as long as it's not excessive and having good lyrics that are either informative or educative etc (just like poetry). 2- No handshakes or touch whatsoever between men and women. He's mistaken or trolling. 3- Statues of soul-less beings are permitted. Like statues of buildings, cars, trees etc. Statues of creatures with souls, i.e animals and men, are prohibited, utterly, no matter the context (art or worship); for many shirk habits have always started in an insiduous and seemingly innocent way, like "we're making statues of these good people to remember them only", which is exactly what pagans of old said to their prophets. Paintings, too, can only be of nature or artificial as in mountains, sea, trees, rivers....anything that isn't human or animals; cars, architecture, inanimate objects...etc. All of this is okay as long as it's not of humans and animals. But there are some exceptions, like isolated parts of humans, like in anaotmy books, like an isolated hand, or microscopic pictures...etc Anyways many many details in this topic, but none of it has to do with "except for art". It's all about pictures of soul-equipped creatures. There are tons of evidence, one of the main ones: قال ﷺ: أشد الناس عذابا يوم القيامة المصورون متفق على صحته I hope this helps, brother Bobby and anyone that doesn't know about these topics. If anyone needs further proofs from the Holy Quran, Sunnah and what sahaba interpreted....I'll be glad to help. Just so u know that these 3 remarks are fairly agreed upon and present no controversy whatsoever in the scholars community of islam, hence you can verify this by yourself from multiple sources - and you will reach the same conclusion. Assalam Alaykoum

A general islamic rule to follow regarding things you don’t know if halal or haram (of course you can always ask someone with knowledge): Everyday matters are generally halal unless proven otherwise by evidences. Ex. all food are halal except the ones forbidden. Worship matters are haram unless proven otherwise; meaning you cannot just pray 3 times instead 5 or create your own way of worship without evidence as its bidah (innovation).

The thing about music is that there isn’t an aya or hadith sahih that explicitly says music is haram. There is one hadith that says only specific instruments are allowed, but some scholars say this hadith is weak. So you find different groups of muslims, some think that music is halal as long as it doesn’t spread and encourage sin (most popular music nowadays does), another group that thinks music is haram. I believe it comes down to our own perception about what the music is telling you or influencing you to do. Thus if you feel something is pulling you into the path of sin then abstain from it.
