We should be allowed to rent out spaces in our homes as law abiding taxpayers, we’re not drug dealers. Most states allow this. NYC just likes making things hard for business owners and is becoming a communist city.

Add to this the reduced number of hotel rooms from housing migrants and the city is making harder for tourists come enjoy the newly built tourist areas. Great move!

Imagine these home owners allowing NYC to not apply these same laws all other short term corporate hotel chains. Imagine not using your 2nd amendment to stop this corruption

@@vajona2495 It's obvious you don't have a clue as to what zoning codes are. I am a residential home owner and Airbnb and my neighbors can kiss my butt before I'll let them rent out a room or have short term rentals to transients in my neighborhood. No Hotel zone? That's just dim.

@@vajona2495 Again you are just showing your total ignorance of Zoning codes. In NYC it's listed under C1 Commercial and Commercial overlay zoning and occupancy. It specifically prohibits hotels in residential areas. Look, just stop. You are making stuff up and it's not a good look pumpkin. As a planning and zoning associate in my area there is no way I'm allowing that nonsense to happen in a residential neighborhood.

Now small time Airbnb hosts are gonna have to get second jobs or lose their home… I understand banning corporate landlords from buying entire apartment complexes for Airbnb. That’s wrong. And that should be illegal. But these shotgun approaches are hurting regular host too 😢

This is modern politics at its best. You use the outrage of one constituency to line the pockets of another constituency. Hotel operators are going to profit hugely, but the residential rental market is going to be aided almost not at all. The real culprit in the rental housing crisis is the work-from-home movement. The real solution is to re-zone commercial real-estate for dual use. In doing this you would solve the commercial real-estate crisis (too little demand) and the residential real estate crisis (too much demand) at the same time.

This is pissing in the wind compared to the shortfall. The problem is work-from-home. Occupancy went from near 3 per unit to just over 2 people per unit. This means there was a nearly 30-ish percent increase in the need for residential units. There are about 2.1 million rental housing units in NYC. There are about 40,000 Airbnb rentals, some of which are owner-occupied (meaning they will not suddenly become available for residential rental. To return to a pre-pandemic balance of supply and demand we would need nearly 600,000 new units. The solution is to re-zone commerical real-estate that stands empty due to the same exact cause.
