Continuing to advance as a leader in off-grid and boondocking camping Rockwood & Flagstaff have officially unveiled their new "Power Package" for select Geo Pro and E-Pro Travel Trailers! The option is spendy but robust in its capabilities from what I can see!
Find Geo Pro & E-Pro RVs Now at bit.ly/3f9cP8i
Though I do not yet consider this a "full indefinite off-grid" package I think it's yet another step in the right direction. I'm especially excited about that new battery technology we're seeing here!

The soft start AC is a huge benefit. Being able to run the AC from a small honda generator without having to do any third party modifications is great. This will save many people from pulling muscles trying to lug a heavy generator out of a pickup bed or SUV!

Considering that Mastervolt 12/5500 battery retails around $6,500 - $7,000 by itself, thats really not a bad price at all considering it's buy-and-play. You can always DIY one with more capacity if you have the skills/time, but not a bad price for a very nice pre-installed system. Good job Rockwood and Josh!

12v air conditioners are in their infancy, but may offer better performance without the cost and efficiency loss of a big inverter. Currently an RTX2000 is about 6800btu for around $2300 is one of the cheaper ones. If they get more popular I expect they will get better and cheaper.

Quick online search shows that battery to be around 125lbs. A standard 100AH AGM battery is around 65lbs, with 50% usable capacity. So the Lithium battery weights about the same as 2 AGM batteries, but providing almost 8x the usable power as Li batteries can be safely drawn down to 5%.

The key to the dream of having the charge level in the battery to sustain long usage of a A.C. is to also have a small inverter/generator. I have a Champion 2500 dual fuel which would be perfect to supplement the Li battery. Run the inverter to bring the battery up to 100%, shut it off. Wait until the Li battery is down to 20-30% charge and run the inverter again. It will run the AC and also supplement solar bringing the Li back up to full charge. To be able to make a AC totally Li powered you would need three of these batteries and four times the amount of solar panels (and some sun) 💥

I recently bought a E-Pro 19FDS with the 190w solar package since I rarely boondock I really don't need that much solar capacity. But I did replace the junk lead acid batteries provided by the local dealer with a LiFePo 200amp/hr battery. The RV sits out in a non-shaded area and I run the 12v fan and fridge 24/7 with just the base solar package and I am pleased with the performance of the system. Also I want to thank Josh for his straight forward information which is so refreshing after being around RV salesmen since 1985.

Being the winter weirdo here, the reason I’m excited about large battery capacity with fast recharge time is largely about being about the run the furnace blower fan all night to stay warm and then easily recharge off a generator without that taking all day. This mostly seems great for that! One question to that end though - did you ever hear back on the question of internal heating elements in the battery? That was definitely a key advantage of the BattleBorn approach Ember went with.
@dreadlord76
@dreadlord76 2 жыл бұрын
It sounds likethey are placing the battery under the Murphy Bed, which means it will be in the insulated/heated area. So during use, this should be ok. The bigger problem seems to be that the battery does not have low temp cutoff, which protects the battery from charging when it is at a low temperature. This maybe an issue that has to be manually dealt with during winter storage.

HOLY CRAP. Mastervolt is top notch gear, it's up there with Victron. It's HIGH END MARINE GRADE equipment. 11K BTU A/C - Northwood Manufacturing in LaGrande, Oregon builds Nash travel trailers and Arctic Fox / Wold Creek truck campers, which can be equipped with a 2500 watt Onan LP Generator. The 11k BTU A/C has been used in those smaller Nash TTs and almost all of the truck campers for many years, rather than a 13.5k BTU, so the onboard 2500 LP genny can run them.

Josh, this is an excellent video on the details of this solar package. These are great options but can be overkill and expensive for the average camper. I have found building small and working up can be another way to gain these results. Case in point I started with a small Ecoflow Mini all inclusive power station and then after a a few months upgraded to the Delta Max and extra battery as a very good solution. Overall there are many solutions for the average camper and experience for sure helps make good choices along the way. Thanks again for this video.

I stopped drooling when I saw the price. LOL! Other than that, my one big con is putting the battery under the bed. To me, that's like sleeping on power lines. There has to be a health issue associated with that, especially for full timers who sleep on it every night. Unless they're also doing some kind of shielding, too? But I do like that they're getting serious about off-grid power since I'm interested in full-time nomad RVing with boondocking a lot, and that AC is extra important if you have a companion animal.

If you get used to using watt hours instead of amp hours, it is really much easier to tell some one how long something will run. You just divide watt hours by the watts of the item to get a ball park run time. One year later solar panel quit functioning and noticed discoloration on surface of panel which is go power flex 100 watts also kill battery dead. Took to rv dealership to repair under warranty in 2020. Till recently December, took it to hunting then battery already dead. In few days later I replaced battery then in about 2-3 weeks battery dead. I charged battery for 2 days. Went to hunting again and after 3 days battery dead. I wonder why solar isn’t charging. Back home and I check solar panel, found that panel has discoloration again. It is like plastic window in old car convertible and headlights. I was thinking about change flex to solid solar panel. @@JoshtheRVNerd very true. The theory is that the batteries still maintain their charge with minimal draw when the panels are covered with snow and with the battery disconnect off. Therefore the batteries keep their capacity long enough until the panels are clear enough to receive amps from the sun again. Very, very cool! These models are on the larger side of what I am considering as a possible replacement for my 16' camper trailer. I tow with a 3/4 ton diesel truck and boondock camping is my reason for wanting a small camper, not because of marginal towing capacity. Adequate solar power for boondock camping is something I want. Currently, I'm using a 135W suitcase panel but I would like to upgrade to something in the 350W to 400W range in a rooftop design. Also, large available table top space for radio equipment is very important to me and I'm willing to sacrifice other features to get that.

As long as they don't go below 20% or so they should be fine. I'd also be worried about charging them so fast. Did they say how many cycles these will get to before dropping down to 80% capacity? I also wonder if they come with a DC to DC charger so you can charge while towing. I must say, those batteries are extremely expensive. They do look nice though. I'm telling ya, 12v ac option! Appreciate the overview and making it easy to understand. I'd love to see a comparison of some of the better packages out there under the Bish's umbrella - keystone v ember v rockwood v winnebago FLX. So far, to me, it feels like the FLX is the best set with the Truma components, but these packages are coming hard and fast and confusing to compare.

Frankly Keith it’s just as confusing for me. One video like this takes me almost all day to try to understand things to at least a base level enough where I feel I can speak on them clearly

Josh thank you. We have been following along for a few months now. I was intrigued when you showed us the Ember. I was thoroughly convinced when Mr Haylett bought the first one. I knew my search was over. Fast forward to Tampa RV supershow. Went on opening day. Walked in the 191MDB. Had max plus solar package...4 battleborn batteries. I bought it right then. Thank you for doing what you do. Ashley was there. Got to meet her and told her you are the reason we knew about the ember. Thanks from Charlie and Gina in Florida.

The $8k MSRP price is quite reasonable, as compared to what Coachmen or Winnebago wants for their Li package for Class B RVs. To buy the parts for such a system would probably be around $3-4k without dealing with right sizing the AC, and it makes sense to have a manufacturer works out the details with regards to the wiring and AC integration. Hoping they figure out how to get it fitted into a 19FD, but the 19FDS is a reasonable choice.

I was also very surprised it wasn’t listed as available on the 19 FD but it was on the FDS

Dang I'm so excited!! I want a Geo or E Pro 15TB but the solar was an issue since we'll be off grid with it. The Ember I saw at the show was running A/C on solar so I was super interested in them but they didn't have the size I wanted, something smaller with a wet bath.

looking at the specs for the mastervolt, its BMS system does not have a low temp sensor to cut off charging battery when temp gets down to 32 F. Just be aware if you do any camping at or below freezing temps.

A good upgrade would be the ability to connect to the tow vehicle to charge the batteries while driving.
@JoshtheRVNerd
@JoshtheRVNerd 2 жыл бұрын
That’s not an upgrade. That’s something every trailer benefits from. The vehicle just needs to have a charge line run to the seven way plug and you’re done Most trucks already have that
@bdydrppup
@bdydrppup 2 жыл бұрын
95% of the vehicles on the road already charge the trailer while towing. It is prewired into the 7 way connector wiring.

geo pro is great trailer but missing TWO things, make it higher with independent suspension PLUS theres only ONE floorplan with queen size bed, i would like G20BHS with queen size bed instead of tiny extra storage - simply need that extra 6'' for my legs :D

Hi Josh. I know this video is about a year old, but can you confirm that MPPT Charge Controller (see 13.27)? I think they're now using a PWM which from what I understand is not as efficient as the MPPT. Would be ashamed and make no sense if they downgraded. Also, looks like they are offering this power upgrade in the 19FD as well. Really enjoying your vids and knowledge sharing. Thanks
@JoshtheRVNerd

The base package uses a PWM for sure. The Max Solar package is a totally different electrical system from the ground-up essentially

i assume the pricing has come down due to all of the available options on the market that can do all this. Over $8k for everything described in 2022 seems steep to me. I have converted a travel van with 700w of solar, a 600amp hour battery bank [2 batteries], inverter charger, and also the ability to charge off the tow vehicle alternator if needed for far less money. I wonder if the Rockwood pricing for the power package has come down as I do not see $3k in labor to install this package, especially when being installed on the factory line.
@JoshtheRVNerd

Real talk: I’ve not seen any significant relief in pricing in the RV market quite yet. Until existing gluts of inflated-invoice models roll thru I don’t think we’ll see a lot of it sadly
