Hey there, just by the way. You can open - as many of you surely know - an Opinel with the "Coup de Savoyard" as the french say. Sometimes the wooden handle makes it difficult to open the blade (could be because the wood is wet). So, gently tap and the blade will come out a little (rotation lock in your hand, groove downwards). Should work with the "Explore" too - just use the lanyard hole instead. Oh, great knife this Explore - I use it sometimes as an alternative to my Victorinox Outrider. Take care, enjoy mother nature and stay healthy

The "lanyard hole" is the perfect pry tool. So many guys destroy their knives because they pry with the blade, I think that is what that piece of metal is good for. Nice knife. Nice review

Cleusueau! quick the French police whistle!!!! Nice knives and very reasonable in price. French vineyard workers use Opinels for grafting buds on vines. They start out in a size from about an inch long ( a novel toy that really cuts ) all the way up to about an eight inch blade.

1:39 what do you mean it's clear that they're not the same size. The handle of the no. 12 explorer is the size of the regular no. 12. It's a foldable knife so the number has never been a reference to the blade size.

that's a really good woods knife, even with all the gimmicks. Opinels were never designed for chopping. The removable gut hook for small game is a plus, as is the whistle. Leaving the gut hook in for larger game is pretty cool too. Ferro rod worked like a champ. Opinel is a world leader in budget (but terrific) knives, and considering the beefiness of this knife, I see a good future for it. Gonna get one as soon as I can. As long as you don't chop with it or expect to baton 12 inch logs, this knife is definitely EDC-able on the trail, if you have a saw. Cross-batonning should not be a problem. I like it, and I trust Opinel. :)

To me that's a hunting knife/survival knife. Whistle can be good for communication, if there are others in the woods hunting (like on a driven hunt). Or for driving game as a beater on a driven hunt. I think it closest competitor is the EKA Swingblade. Very clever design. Price point is a little bit high though.
@sameold77

Good points but it is kinda gimmicky still. A good backup knife in this case. I have an EKA Swingblade (and the Ganzo version) I do not really use it but as a backup at deer camp maybe. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Jack Woods Carbon steel is easier to sharpen and takes a great edge and thats what they normally use. This one is stainless steel though. I believe its Sandvik 12c27, same type Mora uses. I dont agree with what you are saying about needing a professional to get "supersteel" knives sharp though. You can easily hand sharpen such knives as long as you have a decent honing stone with a fine grit side. You just need work with it a bit longer. Alternatively you a belt strop and some autosol.

@patfrench157
@patfrench157 7 жыл бұрын
Nope Noah! This is a #12. The blade length isn't the determinant. The spigot and the two parts of the Viroblock are 12 which is why is SAYS 12 on it. Look at the Opinel #9 Oyster knife. it has a 5cm blade but the lock is #9 so it's a #9. The lanyard loop cannot be any smaller, the gut hook has to emerge from the other side and still allow the lanyard to pass through it. This is a superb tool and has become my routine bench knife. We can't carry a knife this big in UK.

I love standard Opinel knives, but I have zero use for this one. I do find it gimmicky, but the truth is I have much better versions of those tools on other knives, and in my pocket. I want a folder to be what it should be, and do what it's supposed to do, which is cut and carve. Gimmicks just make a great knife fatter and longer for no good reason.

I could use this with the rubber handle but no whistles and the rest. There is one place I go where you almost always get rained on and I'm not talking the nice vertical stuff but the horizontal stuff. You have to put Opinels in plastic to stop the soaking/swelling. A rubber handled one would be great but a big Opinel would be less handy as lightness and compactness are two big pluses.
@sameold77

Thanks for the thorough review. I'd stick with the regular #8 outdoors knife for its size. This one really looks sturdy but still a bit big for a folder. It looks like a good chopper too. I couldn't watch you chopping a young tree though. Isn't it illegal?
@sameold77
@sameold77 7 жыл бұрын
I wish they would make the smaller outdoor knife without the serrated blade. That tree had been blown over in a storm blocking my path in camp and was getting cut up anyway, no harm done. Besides it's my own property so I can do what I want. Thanks for watching.

sameold77 thanks for the reply. I agree that it's a pity they serve #8 outdoors knife only with a serrated blade. It's still a useful knife though. I'm glad to learn that little tree was already gone. I couldn't watch the video on full sound and might have missed that part. Here, you can't cut down a live tree even if it is in your garden and the one planted is you. Funny, because you can pull them out and plant somewhere they'll die eventually.

Nice presentation 👍🏼 Like you already said this knife is not edc-able, but I think it's a good backup for the car or bag. What I would prefer for edc carry is the Opinel Outdoor with a blade without serrations. I'm just thinking if it would be possible to exchange the blade of the Outdoor to the "normal" No. 8 model?! I'm not a good diy-guy, so I'll never know if this works, except somebody will put a tutorial online 😁

@patfrench157

Opening an Opinel is easy. So many people complain. Even when a wooden one is soaked: All you do is open the lock, tap the toe [or in this case the belt loop] on your boot and the blade drops enough to grip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5DJY2iGZrSeiq8 This isn't new - It's been called "Le coup du Savoiard" since 1809. This is a hunting knife. The hook is for gutting so use the blade to cut cord. If you want to cut trees use an axe! If you are worried about zombies or insurgents try politics. This knife does what it's meant to do! It's a great scraper for pelts. Put the gut hook and fire stick in your pocket. Keep the knife closed and it will clear the fell down to the hide on a fox beautifully. I'm very glad it is washable - I wouldn't advise using the whistle after using the gut hook! :) Thank you Opinel.
@sameold77
@sameold77 8 жыл бұрын
Great tip on opening a swollen knife. Opinel states on the box this is a 'Nature/Survival/Hunting' knife and even goes as far to print "BUSHCRAFT" on the front of the box. They also call that tool a "cutting hook", not a gutting hook. I see your point though as I don't think it's meant to cut but would make a good gutter. Appreciate you watching and the comments.
@patfrench157
@patfrench157 8 жыл бұрын
Sorry mate, didn't mean to come across harsh! I'm British! I think that there are often translation issues when reading Opinel's own text. On the UK version of their website [which has me drooling - I'm a very big Opinel fan] they have a shop - it maybe where we both got our knives from. I find the best descriptions there. I only gut and tan roadkill so I haven't used the gut hook where I really need it, just on small stuff. I have to be very lucky and VERY quick to snaffle a roadkill deer! No one leaves those around! Thanks for the vid - appreciate the effort.
@sameold77
@sameold77 8 жыл бұрын
No issue my friend. I was just reading what was on the box. However, one website does say (gutting hook). I don't do roadkill anymore. I once picked up a whitetail deer that I watched get hit by the car in front of me, and that I had to finish off with my pocket knife. When I starting gutting it the stomach had exploded and guts were everywhere inside, tainting the meat imo. However, had that been a survival situation, I'd have eaten it. Thanks again.

It’s OK. I’m neutral. I’ll stick with my NO. 9. The simple, old-fashioned feel, appeals to me. But, if someone were interested in the gadgety stuff, I definitely wouldn’t be concerned about quality, and would feel comfortable recommending an Opinel. And, I’m not saying the gadgety stuff is bad. I’ve carried a Swiss Army Knife for years, and it would be a cold day in hell before I ever gave it up. But, let’s face it, Swiss Army Knives could certainly be considered a bit gadgety. LOL... Good review. Sub’d. 👍 Had to edit. I was just thinking: I’m probably going to end up getting one of those. I have a sneaking suspicion that Opinel won’t be making these indefinitely. It’s something really different than any other Opinel I’ve seen. If they stop producing them, I’ll have a collectors item. If they don’t stop producing them, I’ll have the oddest Opinel being produced. Either way: WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER! lol...

Cool knife. I think it will make a great camp knife to keep in the bag. I am not fond of using any folder as a chopper. I think the hook will probably shaping up well with a chainsaw file. Do you know what it will retail for here in the U.S. ? Thanks for sharing. Atb. Robert

I do not know the Retail price in the USA but I've heard it will be around $40 but don't hold me to that. It is definitely a 'keep in the bag' knife. I don't use folders as choppers at all, but I wanted to see if this knife could take it. Appreciate you watching and commenting.

Why wait? Buy it from France now! It's 39 Euro plus shipping. The Dollar/Euro price is good right now. Look at www.Opinel,com/en [unless you read French] Follow the links to "Museum shop" and just buy it. We are not allowed to sell or buy this knife in UK. [but we can buy a 22cm carving knife for $5 in a supermarket - it's confusing] Opinel will charge you Euro on your card but your statement will state dollars.

That's where I got this one. The Opinel Museum Shop, straight from France with pretty fast shipping.

Ahhhhh why does opinel keep making these bs knives? The reason people love opinels is because of their extreme functionality, value for money, and simplicity! Adding a synthetic handle for their original deign would really make it an excellent folder that will still be very functional in wet environments ! This full of bs knife is really just overpriced junk with unnecessary bells and whistles (quite literally). People have been trying to waterproof wooden opinel handles for Ages! With limited success of course. I truly can't understand why they won't simply make a simple no bs original design opinel with synthetic handle.
@sameold77

I agree that a 'normal' opinel with synthetic scales would be nice. They tried here at something different, which they succeeded at, but is it worth it...meh. Thanks for watching and the comment.

Excellent video review. Everything you have said backs up my argument that you should stick to the wooden type and carry a sheep dog whistle - just like I do (smug comment). If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I don't think you are doing the right thing with the hook, it is made to cut through a seat belt. The other side is a life hammer, and is made to break a window.

Shame that opinel made a "tactical" knife after all. I love Opinel for the simple and honest design. Every thing does not need a bottle opener, wihistle and window smasher. Good video tho.
