🦒🙋♀🙌💖 Great and useful information in this masterclass. You have addressed the subject thorough and accuratly 👏These days I am so much more careful at repotting newly arrived orchids and the only ones I transition right away into water culture are Phalaenopsis, either hybrids or species and I've never lost one. Which, to be honest, was quite a surprise at first. But I guess Phalaenopsis are different root growers at some point. I have been especially mindful of Cattleya roots as Cattleyas are the majority of my collection, how differently they behave. I liked it when you said that when we get a pot arriving full of dead roots and still it could be advisable to wait till you repot. I never thought of it that way but it certainly makes sense 🤔 Best wishes for the day for you and yours 🥰😍😍😘

FFF 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 good evening, meine liebe Freundin! thank you so very much for your feedback on this first of the series. I had 51 minutes of raw footage which I wanted to have in the video, because I was addressing different genus and how they might respond to my statement about leaving orchids alone until they grow new roots. But.... that video would have been 40 minutes long if I had not taken that chunk out 🤪 ain't nobody got time for that 😆 I can talk about this 'all day long!' I just need time to edit... talking is easy🤣 leave the orchids that arrive with dead roots alone! They can't get any deader (if that is a word😂) and they certainly won't come back to life because they get chopped off! I hope that whoever listens to the tips that are opposite of what they may have heard for years, receives the information with as much grace as you did! Thank you so very very much 🙏🏼 I hope your day was awesome, amiga mia! Full of wonderful little things that took your breath away and put a smile on your soul 😘 really appreciate you watching ❤️🌸

🌸🥷🏼 Trish San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼♀️🥰💐 guten Abend Orchideen Schwester!! I hope that you are well and your weekend is giving you all the vibes that a weekend is there to give ❤️ I find it quite chilling now to not repot the moment an orchid arrives. I cannot believe that I have some 10 months in, and they have still have not been repotted. 25 years ago, that would not have happened, and if someone suggested that I would be leaving an orchid in an old pot with old media, for more than 4 weeks, even, I would have laughed them out of the room 😆 I have to get a few done now, because it is now with new root growth or in 7 months ... I would prefer now, as it will make life easier when it comes to pH and watering during the winter months. There are enough challenges during those months, different organic media is really not something I want to add to those challenges! I need some more quiet time on the patio.... hang my sign out beyond the hedge with big red letters spelling it out for everyone there '¡Silencio por favor!' 😆 really appreciate you watching, 🌸🥷🏼Freundin! I’ve noticed the same thing in the past. I no longer repot and get rid of all the dead roots right away. I always wait till I see new roots coming. My theory is the roots may look totally dead to our eye but I think they still have some very diminished function. New roots are better at their job but those old dead ones seem to be getting just enough to sustain the orchid. Great video as always!!! Hope you are well.

Hi Josh 😍💐 its good to see you again! 🤗 I think you are on to something with your assessment that what we consider dead roots, are still doing something, if not 100% efficient, they are still serving a purpose, because it is so obvious that when chopping off dead roots and then orchid starts to struggle? Shouldn't make a difference, right? But it does! Thank you for giving me your input on what I mentioned in this video, I really appreciate that, Josh 🤗 I had as good a day as I could have, based on the the 'blocks' of activities that needed to be done, based on angle of the sun, 1st phase of cleaning the house, Xyliano time, dogs time, film time etc etc, and now editing time and YT housekeeping! I am 1 hour behind schedule... and I cannot say where I lost that hour 🤷🏼♀️ Maybe a corner was dirtier than I thought and needed more attention, but, other than that... all good, and thank you so much for caring! I hope YOUR day was awesome and that YOU are well, Josh! Thank you, also for watching ❤️🌸

Super master class Nina. I had made the mistake of separating the media immediately during repot. Many orchids come in coconut husks tightly packed and the roots happily growing into the husk. Since the husk absorbs more water and the husks disintegrate on my daily watering, I used to make a thorough clean up. Result existing roots die and the waiting period for new roots is longer. I made the mistake with my first hibikki and I didn't remove the coconut husk for my second hibikki. Expect more videos in master class series Nina.

HI Jose 😍💐 oh, to be able to grow in a climate where the orchids can just stay in that coconut shell and take over! Personally, if I were still in Kenya and got an orchid with the shell around it, I would not remove it at all, and tie the orchid, together with the shell to the tree branch. Eventually the roots in there will die, but the orchid will use the whole network to start using the tree as support. I appreciate your feedback on this video, my friend, thank you so very much 🤗 your support is very much appreciated! Hope you had a fabulous Friday and I wish you a stunning Saturday 🥰🌸

Hi beautiful lady 😍💐 I have checked her out 😊 and because I grew up in Kenya, I feel as though I have a good understanding of how things are in India. Not 100% of course, but conditions, the persistent rainy season, the high humidity etc, I can immerse myself into that climate, because I lived it for 18 years. I wonder if I am contradicting what Mini says? @@NinjaOrchids they never say anything of the sort. None of them They just directly tell you to repot everything. When I watch a video like yours, there’s so much of the science to learn from. With home growing, they rely on experience. It’s only after watching KZbin that I learnt one need not water their plants everyday!!! Because we water everyday, except when it rains. The main potting material is broken tiles and charcoal. If you want some moisture to remain in the pot, you add some coconut chips. The difference I notice is their air quality levels are so different from mine. For repotting, there’s no consideration. If you’re ready to repot, your plant is ready! I’ve never heard anyone talk of water Ph. And I figured out ppm is our ml per litre. Maybe it’s the water and the weather? But thank you for some great learnings. They’re useful to me.
@NinjaOrchids9 ай бұрын
I love the potting material combo and in climates with such high humidity as you experience, it really is perfect. For oncidiums with fine roots, I can see adding coco chips as beneficial because of the extended moisture retention. But, yes, because you have such high humidity, there is no need to water every day. I remember in Kenya, I was not aware of watering my orchids that were in my trees, which 99% of them were, mother nature did everything. During the rainy season they got drenched all the time, nothing really dried out because of the high humidity, and during the non rainy season, the humidity and dew point did the work, also, many orchids rest during the stressful times so as not to expend energy that may result in the demise of the orchid. Do you have water tanks that collect rain water on the roof tops? In Kenya, we got water from the municipality during the dry season, but they shut it off during the rainy season and the tanks that usually filled with municipal water then were opened up to collect rain water. Enter mosquito larvae which were in my bath water 😆 I pretended that I had little sea horses bathing with me! 🤣 thank YOU so much for your feedback and your incredible support! You are so appreciated 🫶🏼❤️🌸
@coypeahen9 ай бұрын
@@NinjaOrchids No. The municipality provides water all year round. In some states rain water harvesting is mandatory in every premises. In some, we rely wholly on ground water. Mosquito control and mosquito borne diseases is a big budget area for me the central government. Sometimes, officials do impromptu visits to homes to check whether there are plants being grown in water, to control dengue and malaria. So, we aren’t big on rain water collecting.
@NinjaOrchids9 ай бұрын
Things certainly have changed and I am sure that Kenya does not allow for open roof top tanks to be open to the elements now either. I doubt the control the mosquito population but it is feasible that they do not allow for standing water either. I had both dengue and malaria. The last time I had dengue was when I was 15. I lost 3 days of my life ... I cannot remember anything. I was taking malaria prophylaxis on a weekly basis back then, so when I got so ill, they had nothing for dengue fever except ice baths every 3 hrs. I was oblivious though, I just remember one time being so cold. When the fever broke, I was told about what they did with me to keep the fever somewhat in check and ice baths were the best option at the time. Don't want to do that again.

If I get no more kids I take a good look at the roots through the pot and then if they look green after watering them I just leave them for a few days and look at them again just keep checking and then if I think they’re not gonna last in that pot and I do something about it😮😮❤❤

HI Andrea 😍💐 that is best practice... leave them be and let them deal with the shock of a different home by just providing what they need and allow them to settle in! The shock to a root system, after the orchid is already in shock... it can be too much. Not all orchids are the same, but, if in doubt... leave the orchid alone until new roots grow, then everything will definitely be fine. 👍🏼👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, lovely lady! Guess what? I have two Dendrobium Bigibbum orchids growing in maidenhair fern twigs (finely chopped) with charcoal bits. They've been growing in this media for a little over six months now, and are doing very well. The roots are very visible, and have established themselves really well. This was an experiment - and I am pleased (so far!). I also put one of "our NoID mini cattleyas" (Hoehne?) in the same media, and they have also established themselves fairly well. They have spread out with new roots and leaves.

This is such a good video Nina and I can not wait for the upcoming masterclass videos. I wish I had come across a video about transitioning orchids from coconut shell to other media when I first started growing, it would have saved me so much stress and worry. I have learnt the hard way with lots of trial and error with this type of media but like you said in the video, ALWAYS WAIT for new roots otherwise set back is inevitable and I have a few that are just coming good now a year later by Jumping the gun. One thing I might say that has really helped me transition from coconut shell to bark or leca is prior to repotting is a week before repotting (I did this one my last 4 repots as a test) was giving the orchids a long soak in a rooting hormone that contains indol 3 butric acid, then a day before repotting a further soak in fertiliser. After the repot from coconut shell like you said most if not all roots are decimated and basically rootless. I found by doing this with these recent repots the orchids have rebounded so so so well, much better than without and new root production has exploded not just from the newest growths but even from older back Bulbs and have established themselves in the new media in no less than 2 months…even new growths on the way to the size of previous growths. Thank you again for this video and all of your advice you give. It’s truly golden. This video definitely requires sharing in the orchid groups and all the newbies who like to jump on in and repot the day their orchids arrive….like I used to 😂😂😂

Hi 😍💐 thank you so very much for your feedback on the content of this video and thank you so so much for sharing it 🙏🏼 exposure... thank you! I am ever so grateful 🤗 If I were in Kenya, I would never remove that coconut shell. The orchid would be hanging in the tree with shell and all for as long as the shell is around, and that can take decades to degrade. But yeah, I think that people jump the gun when they see that shell and then go to town... I never understood why 🤔 eventually I hope that enough people watch this video to understand that, the media is great, and waiting for new roots poses no issues at all, compared to trying to remove it. I am sorry that you found out the hard way 🥲 I am happy to hear of the progress of the orchids you mention in your comment 👍🏼 I hope you had a great Saturday and wish you the same for your Sunday ❤️🌸

Yes I couldn’t agree more, it is a wonderful media to use. It replicates how they’d grow in nature very well, plus it’s cheap and very long lasting. If I had a house of my own here I wouldn’t be removing it either and I’d have them hanging in the trees also. Although they do look so pretty all lined up in there lovely pots. You've got a cute little conifer seedling growing in that Vanda. Is that from the hedge or was that there when you got it? I'm 50/50 on the dead roots emergency repot. Some plants will seem to respond and grow, others just start to dry up and die. Sophronitis coccinea is one that really objects and drops dead if it isn't growing new roots when you repot. Promenaea as a genus tend to drop dead. On the flip side, Phalaenopsis can be essentially rootless, will start to look horrible and then new roots will pop out and, eventually, the plant will rehydrate and start growing again (but they typically have to get really dehydrated before they start survival mode). Zygopetalums can usually be recovered if the following conditions are met 1) you place them on moss 2) give them good light but no direct sun 3) don't touch them until they have produced a new growth and are well rooted.

Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! If I were into bonsai, I would keep it an cultivate it on, but .... puuullleeeaaasssee!! Right now, I am struggling to keep up with the workload on the patio 🤪 it self seeded ... one day ... voila!! 🌲 maybe the seed was in the pot and it decided 'this is a nice place to set up shop!' maybe I will actually see if I can't cultivate it. Would be fun, no? coccinea will drop dead when bothered and repotted even when growing roots (points to me!) I have resorted to just leaving struggling orchids in their pots until I see new roots and then hope to save what I have to work with and what is left of the orchid. now, I have not grown your fancy ones, but this video pretty much covers all the ones that many people grow. I hope anyway! As you can see, I have not touched my Louisendorf since she arrived in my collection. And that growth she came with, the one that was in bloom, rotted out as you noticed back in the day. Still, I left her as is, including that silly gratis tag 😆 just to prove how long it is possible to leave an orchid that is clearly in crappy media in the pot, let it recover if it wants to / can, and then go in once new roots grow. I am super happy to see 2 new growths on it, which I did not expect. And my Trozy Blue... today I saw a spike on one of her growths 🙌🏼 thank you so much for watching, my friend! Great video! Please please please put your Masterclass videos into a playlist if you haven’t done so 🙏🏼 I had to go get some new pots yesterday and I happened to have to walk past the orchid desk. This was at a hardware store where I won’t buy plants from because while they are cheap, they’re always in terrible shape. But what did I see? A mini Phal with polka dots! Yes, straight polka dots. She was the most brilliant of White petals and sepals with dark purple dots and a wee bit of a yellow tinge on the bit above the lip (name of that part escapes me but it’s where the pollen is). Even better she has a perfect root system that was green and healthy. Packed in spag moss that is of very good quality. So I HAD to have her. She will eventually go into a terracotta pot but there is zero reason to repot her and every reason not to. My Phal Midsummer Night…. Idk how long you’re going to let me squirm…. The plug of my nightmares…. Now has most roots again growing. new roots that can’t make its way down into the pot even though it wants to. GGGNNNNNNHHHHHHHHHHH **chants** Nina hasn’t given you permission Nina hasn’t given you permission Nina hasn’t given you permission. I agree with Michael on the Phals. I had several I repotted immediately when the root system/media was awful. What an informative video!! I think that the reason I’ve had such a hard time starting this hobby is because I rushed to repot all of my new orchids that probably set them all back a couple of years and here I am, still waiting for blooms. Do you put your new chids in quarantine? If so, how long?
@NinjaOrchids2 жыл бұрын
HI Paige 😍💐 or.... you have some divas that just need to shake off their jetlag, bella 😘 quarantine.... kind of.... not really though. I mean, they don't go directly on the shelf with the others, because they are not accustomed to my light levels, so automatically they go inside where they have bright shade and there are less orchids. Still, around orchids but not for any other reason but to protect them from what is going on outside. If I were to receive orchids in winter, then I would not have the luxury of another place to put them, so... it is just a matter of watching them, seeing if there are any pests that return after the initial ' orchid incoming grooming' 😆 even my little Sorpresa did not get quarantined to the degree that maybe some would think I should have done... who knows if she had anything on her that I could not see, but, keeping a watchful eye out for eventualities makes it easier to incorporate them and not have to worry too much. Maybe careless, but so far, when I had pest issues, it came from what is going on within the hedge and within my own collection. Hope this answers your question 😍 thank you so very much for watching and for your positive feedback, Paige! Really appreciate it very much, and all that you do behind the scenes in support of the channel 🙌🏼 I cannot thank you enough for that 🙏🏼❤️ 🌸

Nothing wrong with being careful, Bella!! But a couple of vigilant checks are sufficient, because... the moment we unwrap an orchid or even see it in the shop, we already have a pretty good idea of any infestation and deal with it then and there. Snails, are a different matter, but a spritz of H2O2 will deal with those. And... unless there was a rogue seller who sent something with nasties as hitchhikers, we normally don't pick out an orchid from a shop that has a lot of hitchhikers on it. If we do, then we know what we are up against and deal with it once we get home. Sometimes the blooms are so pretty, that a mealy bug here or there doesn't phase me. ❤️

Hi Nina, sorry I'm late commenting on a video that's a few days old but I noticed Michael's comment on Zygos and it made me wonder what to do with my Zygocaste that arrived with 2 small spikes and lots of buds. I noticed a snail munching on one of the growth bases and you said soak in H2O2 for a while which I did and it bubbled away for an hour before I flushed it through. I didn't repot as I didn't want to spoil the buds and the flowers are now lovely but although the pot is black with no holes I can see some dead surface roots and the media looks as if it does need a repot. Michael said wait until there has been a new growth and it is rooted in. With Zygos the new growths and the flower spikes come together so that means you should repot as new buds are forming. Have I got that right and am I too late to do it now the flowers are open? I can't see what is down in the pot 🤷♀️
@NinjaOrchids2 жыл бұрын
HI Carole 😍💐 you are so sweet to watch this video whenever you had time to do so! It is always good to see you even if it were a video from a year ago 🥰 Zygo roots grow once the flowering is done! When the growth continues growing and the pseudobulb may start to fatten at the base or thereabouts. But, no new roots grow while the orchid is in bloom. Which is amazing and you can rest easy and continue to enjoy the blooms and then some. 👍🏼 If you are in doubt, after the blooms have faded... give the Zygo 2 or 3 weeks before moving the surface media away from the base of the new growth and see if there is something already on the way. My Zygo has been in the rubbish media from the moment I brought it home, so... there is nothing to be concerned about with what is going on in the pot. If your other pseudobulbs are holding on and staying plump while she is in bloom, the roots in the pot are coping. Zygos can be considered and treated like terrestrials... they are only fussy when the roots are disturbed too much during a repot, but when it comes to rubbish media, they really do not have any diva tendencies. I am glad that you soaked your pot, and by the sounds of it, no more snails have been around since you did that 💪🏼 awesome! Hope this answers any doubts you had and if you have any follow up questions, please feel free to keep asking! ❤️🌸

I got an orchid that was mounted to a tree. I promptly potted my new oncidium on reaching home. After watching this video, I'm wondering if I did the right thing by my new orchid. The roots appeared to be healthy as I had carefully peeled it off the mount. Firstly, I had also soaked her in rainwater to which I had added seaweed fertilizer. Then I potted her in bark chips, coal and river stones. My climate tho is very favorable to orchids but different from her previous home which was hotter. Do I have to remove these newly potted orchids and keep them bare root until I see new roots?
@NinjaOrchids2 жыл бұрын
Hi Diana 😍💐 please keep your oncidium in the pot now ... don't disturb it based on this video because you don't want to stress it further. It now has a new home and a new pot... it will take a little time to acclimate. Did you get it in the mail or locally? If you see pseudobulbs starting to shrivel, leave it in the pot and let it do it's thing while caring for it as per usual. Oncidiums can start to shrivel their pseudobulbs as a response to stress, and then people start to take them out and cultivate as a rescue, and that is where the real problems start. So, leave it as is and don't stress it out with too much light, bright bright shade will do just fine. Your media mix sounds great based on the info you provided here! I hope this helps and thank you so much for watching and your comment. Congratulations on your new orchid 🎉🌸 have a lovely day 🌸

@@NinjaOrchids I most definitely would appreciate some videos on how to keep and maintain this beautiful plant. I've tried to grow them in pots for years: they grow well at 1st then decline. The leaves get these large brown spots (fungus) and mealy bugs attacks are constant despite treatments. I struggle to keep them healthy.

Which terrestrial orchid do you have, Diana? kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYbGZWSFpryinq8 here is a video with the recipe for garlic alcohol and garlic infused water to apply as a fungicide, just in case you want a heads up on how I treat my terrestrial orchids against pests 👍🏼 let me know which terrestrial orchid you have 🤗

My first orchids are Cymbiddiums, they cane from the inner part of South Africa where it is very hot and dry. Where i am , near the coast, the humidity outside is higher. The seedlings started looking yellow, so i repotted into terracotta ( after some reading) and used new bark, pearlite and some peat. So the medium us alot different than it was. I lost one, but the rest look great ( a month later). Was my thought process wrong in trying to get the medium dryer faster? I've done the same with my first phal. Terracotta with a bottom layer of spagnum ( thin layer) bark, thin layer of spagnum and then moss again. My Rcl i got last week had lecca balls, so i washed them off and added them back into that repot. I took my Tol. Off the sticks and put them in terracotta with some stones and bark. Two are doing great, one's bottom tips are slightly yellow, but that was how i got it, and what prompted me to change the medium. Am i going wrong here? I am not happy i lost the Cymbiddium, so I'm doing my research and trying to understand each ones habit and how they would have grown in nature.

This said I got the Cymbiddiums around the 20 th of December last year.... I had to wait to carry on with expanding my rose garden, so went to my orangery. It's got a solid wall one side, massive window on the long side and then the small wall side is open to nature. This is where the orchids live

Hi Deandri 😍💐 your media mix is great for cymbidiums, however, if you can keep them evenly damp and not let them dry out, that would be better. I am glad that you added peat because that will hold moisture a little longer. Cymbidiums are terrestrial, semi terrestrial and can really benefit from consistent moisture around their roots. They are super vigorous growers, so once they get their grow on, ideally you do not want them to dry out. The mix for your tolumnias sounds just fine for your humid climate. As they are in terracotta, to start with, soak the pot in a saucer of water, and allow the moisture to wick up into the media, instead of watering the surface of the pot. With high humidity, its best to not have that much moisture around the base of tolumnias. Unless you have warm growing cymbidiums, they are cold hardy down to 5ºC. Even though mine is a tiny starter bulb from the specimen it was for years, even that little one is still outside exposed to the elements. Also, cymbidiums love to have a temperature drop to get them to spike. Know that, while I only have one cymbidium, I am quite experienced in them based on the collection I had in the past, when I was growing in organic media, so ask away in case you just want a confirmation of what your findings are 👍🏼 your orangery sounds like paradise 😍 thank you so much for watching this video and the time you spent on the channel. I so appreciate the support 🫶🏼❤️🌸

Another great video with so much to learn, thank you Nina. I have a question for you, pls. My 3 Catt´s (Purpurata, Rcl. Ruby and White Bridal) are in smaller pots that they should be. New shoots in all three cases and some new roots growing already outside the pots. I fear to put them now in larger pots, because I may break the new roots, some as long as 3 cms. All have spatas in the newer shoots. What should I do? 1) moove them right away to bigger containers, 2) let them flower and then moove - this will take months and the roots will be much longer - or 3) simply put some sphagnum moss around the roots that are growing outside the pot untill the spatas do their job? Kuliko wewe. 🦓🦏🦛

Hi Clementina 😍💐 thank you so much for your feedback on this video, I really appreciate it 🙏🏼 Here is what I suggest you do, for the coming months so that all can bloom and the new roots can grow into media: Take a bigger pot and place the orchid with the smaller pot into the bigger pot, and then fill around the bigger pot with new media. This way, the new roots have something to grow into, and when you are ready and feel comfortable, you can repot and remove the smaller pot, add new media into the bigger pot and the roots should be absolutely fine. 👍🏼 Sounds good? That is what I would do if I was uncertain, had sheaths and did not want to risk the new roots. Let me know what you think 🤗 hope your day was fabulous and thank you so much for watching 🥰🌸
