Same here. I'd much rather have a fleshed out studio version of this unfinished piece than the studio versions we ended up getting
@canuck2111 жыл бұрын
The song was still in writing progress at this point. For a "new" band, I find them very daring to perform unfinished songs. New Order was so very unique with guts like no other. Even Factory Records thought these lads were done after the death of their lead singer. They were betting on A Certain Ratio to lead the independent record label. Who would have thought that band that would keep Factory afloat was the same lads who helped it starts.

I hate to break it to you people, but I was there, I lived this, I saw them live many times... they were not "young and raw". The problem is Albrecht, Sumner... whichever name you call him by, had the worst attitude imaginable when playing live. He did not give one tenth of one f*ck about you or the job he was doing. In fact it was clear he went out of his way to act like a spoiled brat and ruin things. At one show, I don't recall the song, but it had a "hooter" part and he was playing it... well, only some of it because by the time he got half way thru he tired of it, stopped, paused a second and then threw it down into the stage. He then looked around for his guitar which he eventually saw on a stand about 20 feet to his right... you could literally see his unhappiness at the idea of having to walk 20 feet to get it when he realized the cord for it was at his feet. So... that's right... he pulled it by the cord, off the stand, and it fell on it's face. He then dragged it... squelching and wailing, slowly across the stage destroying what his band mates were trying to do. Stop being sycophants. Bernard Sumner is a grade A dick. He wrote some excellent songs... but he's truly one of the great asshats of all time.

This, I believe, was their final goodbye to Ian and Joy Division and the official birth of New Order. "No, I've never met anyone quite like you before / Oh, it's the first time, it's the first time, it's the first time / And it's going away / It's going away right then." You can see it in all their faces, they're all still so lost and devastated, and probably until around 1983 they were still pretty gloomy onstage, but this is the moment where it all finally starts to come together. The joy, the buoyancy, and the energy of Power, Corruption, and Lies is right here in the instrumentation, to be cultivated and expanded through the next two years. I love Movement and the first batch of NO songs, especially "Procession," but Tony Wilson once said "Temptation" was the first NO song where Bernard wasn't just copying Ian, when he'd finally found his own voice. I agree. Just fantastic.
@Pyrrhic537 Жыл бұрын
I think you're right! Those crazy space sound effects. Are they something to do with seizures ? The lyrics " it's the third time" I could guess are a reference to Ian's final suicide after 2 earlier attempts. " Bolts ( electricity as in seizures ?) from above hurt people" down below" ? And so on.
