"The Perfect Kiss" is a song by the English alternative dance and rock band New Order. It was recorded at Britannia Row Studios in London and released on 13 May 1985.
Lyrics
I stood there beside myself
Thinking hard about the weather
Then came by a friend of mine
Suggested we go out together
Then I knew it from the start
This friend of mine would fall apart
Pretending not to see his gun
I said let's go out and have some fun
I know you know
We believe in a land of love
I know you know
We believe in a land of love
I have always thought about
Staying here and going out
Tonight I should have stayed at home
Playing with my pleasure zone
He has always been so strange
I'd often thought he was deranged
Pretending not to see his gun
I said let's go out and have some fun
I know you know
We believe in a land of love
I know you know
We believe in a land of love
When you are alone at night
You search yourself for all the things
That you believe are right
If you give it all away
You throw away your only chance to be here today
Then a fight breaks out on your street
You lose another broken heart in a land of meat
My friend, he took his final breath
Now I know the perfect kiss is the kiss of death

Its impressive that New Order has a singer that dont sing, a bassist that thinks he is the guitarist, a drummer that dont know more than one way to play and a synth player that plays a frog solo mid song and still is one of the most amazing bands of all time

I am sure he would be pleased for their success and longevity although Ian wasn't commercial and he would never have gone down the New Order route - he would have left the band first. World in Motion, a case in point. Great song for England, no doubt, I love it. Ian wouldn't have had a dump on it. Would have seen the whole thing as an outrage to his art. I believe.

@@Spartanm333 New Order only went down the synth road because Ian Curtis liked Kraftwerk. It's impossible to know what would have become of Joy Division had Ian Curtis lived longer. I do believe they would have broken into the mainstream around the same time New Order did. And more than likely their music would have been even better than what New Order produced, which is saying something.

areyousatisfied Haha, true story. Back in 2008, I saw Peter Murphy perform in NYC and for the after show, Peter Hook was DJ'ing. I had the opportunity to briefly talk to Hook, and in those few words, I told him that his bassline in this song is the best bassline ever and that I listen to it everyday. He was very humble by it as he said it was okay, but not his best. He then said something in British slang that I couldn't quite understand because his accent was so thick and it was loud in there. But, he was appreciative of my compliment. Seems like a nice guy. Just thought I'd share that with you. This song is amazing!

stefanofocacci perhaps I’m a little ignorant with the terminology when it comes to guitar playing in general because I’ve only played for a few years myself. Maybe it would be better to point out, from my limited understanding, that bass lines and bassists sound as if they’re in the background but with Peter Hook in New Order, it feels like the opposite where his playing and bass lines are brought to the foreground. Maybe that makes more sense. 😊

I have listened to and loved this song since it's release back in the day. I cried, actual tears, as I read the lyrics (for the first time) while watching the video today. I felt like this was such an 'homage' to JD and Ian Curtis with the talents of New Order that did not imitate JD. This group has been an influential part of my life as well as helping to define the era I was lucky to experience. BTW, I just saw them for the first time on November 18, 2023, at the Darker Waves Fest in Huntington Beach, CA the same day as my wife's 65th birthday, a thrill I will not forget! Please, no hate for the wordiness and emotion of this comment. :)

@canadude6401 4 жыл бұрын
We all know U2, but do we really recognize Adam Clayton as a great bassist? No. Adam is a typical bassist like in most bands..the guy on the left making the low bass sounds. Hooky does so much more.....He not only holds the foundation for the song, he does so much with one instrument, it's mind boggling. He sets the low end rhythm or he takes the lead or floats around somewhere in the middle. He adds texture, very strong emotion that makes up the majority of New Order songs. When you hear his bass guitar riffs it is unmistakably New Order. In this song alone, pay attention to the wide range of instrumentation talent he brings to the table. He even smacks on the drum pads when he gets the chance. There is no New Order without Hooky.

It's so crazy how good this band was. You've got a drummer playing keyboards, a bassist who plays high notes on his bass and switches over to electric drums when needed, the singer also plays guitar and cowbell, and you've got a woman on other keyboards who was never with the band before. Somehow they're all doing this and putting together into one amazing song. Then you have to think that 3 out of 4 of these bandmates recently had their lead singer kill himself just before they were set to embark on a big tour that could have made them huge. They decided to go on, but despite going on, they didn't simply replace the singer. One of their own became the singer, so the new member that joined the band wasn't even replacing him. She was more in the background making sure the electronic stuff was going smoothly.
