New organ installed at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond

A crowd gathered at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond to welcome a new organ that is one of the largest of its kind.
There are not many organs much larger than the newly installed Opus 55 pipe organ at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond.
The organ contains more than 4,330 pipes ranging from a quarter inch to 32 feet.

Yeah its around 2 times bigger than the organ i play and the organ i play is one of the biggest organs that kegg make (at the time)

Juget-Sinclair is really good at revoicing existing pipes to blend into their intended design, and if that’s what they did here I think they did a great job. Still, I wonder if it was a piecing together of 3 existing organs or simply an explanation of three new divisions connected in one console. The builders are native French speakers, so their explanations in English might not have come across as smoothly. What we saw in this video all looked like new material. So at $1.9M I suspect it is all newly built at their factory in Montreal. And bottom line, it sounds like a wonderful large instrument. We should all be happy for them in having it now. No need for queenly disparagement.

It’s really beautiful, though the news facts may be a little off. Your fellow BIS-er is enjoying it immensely! It’s a continuo, choir organ, and gallery in one room. The choir can be played from the gallery, but otherwise all are completely separate. All new, too.

"OPUS" is not a name. "OPUS" means NUMBER!

Not sure I understand the point, but "opus" is the latin word for work, not number. That's numerus.

@@adamjordan9737 Sorry to have gone over your head, nor did I mention Latin. 'OPUS 55' means the 55th organ produced by Juget-Sinclair, 'work' translating to edition, series or NUMBER! ALL organ manufacturers use 'OPUS' to designate the NUMBER of organs they've manufactured.

This news report is inaccurate. This is not one of the largest pipe organs in the world. It is a large insturment but it is nowhere near as large as others. Passau Cathedral in Germany has the largest organ with over 10,000 pipes.

Passau states that they have the largest cathedral organ in the world, but they only recognize Catholic churches, and no others. There are quite a few instruments larger than theirs, in Protestant churches and other public buildings. (The Wanamaker Organ is larger than ALL of them.) Also, Passau has wired together 3 or 4 existing organs in the building, so that they can be played from one huge console. Their biggest organ is merely large, not super-large!

@@EElgar1857 Pleasse forgive me, but the German Catholic is neither backward nor narrow-minded as to exclude non--Catholic churches. In fact, it is much more ecumenical than the US catholic church.

Passau is not even close to being the largest. The largest organ in a house of worship is the Cadet Chapel at West Point, coming in at 23,500 pipes, more than double Passau. If you remove the limit of church spaces, then Boardwalk hall in Atlantic City has 33,113. However, your point does still stand that this organ is not really a contender for the largest in the world. A landmark instrument for Juget-Sinclair and impressively specced, but not as big as the reporter believes

@@robertssjeI meant that ORGANS in other types of buildings were excluded from their rankings, brcause they want the "title", not that the German Cath. Church was backward or narrow-mindrd. I don't know a thing about which church is more, or less, "ecumenical"!

Glad they bought such a nice organ but it ain’t very big. A tiny tracker at a local church here is 963 pipes.

Mary Our Queen in Baltimore has 104 ranks in the back gallery and 26 ranks in the chancel making it a pipe organ of 7,300 pipes, much large than the one listed here. Again, get your facts straight.

First Baptist Richmond is the Largest organ in the state of Virginia.

Yes, though this is the most pipes playable from one console. The choir organ is almost an antiphonal like at FBC, playable from one console.

A nice instrument, but it is not all that large. Many pipe organs are larger. It sound great, but don't exaggerate!!!!!! OK, I get it. It is the largest pipe organ this company has built. You should have stated that at the beginning of the report, would have saved me typing this comment. Get your facts straight. Isn't that what reporting is all about?????????????
