I lived on Independence St. In the 9th Ward a few blocks from the river. I had a couple problems, but people were pretty cool mostly. This was 1983 - 1989 the beginning. Would that area be considered a violent hood? Have not been back since 2003. But, I miss it....

If you think this looks bad just imagine how New Orleans looked in the 90's..I wish Charlie was rolling around through all these inner cities back in the 90's pre gentrification era. There was nothing more scarier than driving in some inner city area back in the 90's driving past a bunch of street dudes only to find yourself driving straight into a dead end street right afterwards.

There's not many dead-end streets in New Orleans, they're generally found under overpasses like Almonaster (9th ward), Hollygrove (uptown) and a few other places in the city. ⚜️⚜️⚜️

@@Martin199320 countless homeless encampments everywhere. Bourbon St was just nasty and run down. Not at all what I expected. Eating munch in the French Quartet and having bums eating out of garbage cans next to us. Mentally I’ll people bothering us as we walked around.

NOLA is actually much improved since Katrina. Lower 9th has been gentrified somewhat. Had a close friend who lived in the 9th and I would stay with him regularly when I lived in Hburg and never felt unsafe cruising around. Love this city.

Tourists are easy targets so if you do want to wander away from the touristy areas then make sure you look like you know where you are and what you're doing.
