They did not get a better life. They lived in ha rsh conditions , and deadly pandemics killed thousands. AND then they were cannon fodder in the meat grinder of 1861 to 1865. Thousands of Nola Irish died, and thousands more suffered from wounds or in POW camps in the Civil War. Take care Erin go Braugh!!

I heard that The African Slaves would target the Irish servants, by rolling the bales of cotton from the levee , to hit the Men loading the cotton on the ship.

The Irish were the original people of color in the USA. Red, tanned, bronze, cooper and yellow.

Robert McNamara Many of the whites of Irish descent living in the suburbs surrounding the city of New Orleans such as in Jefferson, St. Bernard and St. Tammany parishes are the descendants of the original Irish families of the Irish channel.

Im a 6th generation Scot / Irish / German from the Irish Channel. African Americans were brought to the Colony of Virginia in 1619. The African Americans were then spread all over the US. What was once the City of Lafayette, was incorporated in 1833 and is known as the Irish Channel. However it was heavily populated by the Germans prior to the arrival of the Irish. Even though it was called the IC, the Germans out populated the Irish.

Not the first people of color but they were not considered white until the 1920s. Most Irish lived along side blacks for a few generations until they moved up in society.
