Great interview! More like this, please. As a retired S&T man, I am fearful that the “collective loss of memory” in the industry will lead to another bad day for the railway. All of us of a certain vintage, vividly remember the events of December 1988 at Clapham Junction, where the holes in the Swiss cheese all aligned and caused the terrible events that shocked the industry and brought railway safety back under the spotlight. I would be interested to know what NR’s senior engineers feel about this subject. Keep up the good work, gentlemen!

Another great interview with someone you would never normally hear from. I would also have asked him about 3rd rail extensions and time taken during failures to rescue passengers.

Another great interview. Well done all. It’s interesting to see things from the perspective of the regulators without the feeling of pressure to perform miracles. Glad to hear too that Richard wishes to look at the health side of the industry as well as the safety side. All too often, health is put aside to achieve goals. Looking forward to the next show.

Many thanks for this - lots of fascinating detail, and a good feeling that all three of you were 'on the same page'. A couple of issues which perhaps you could bring up if you have Richard Hines as a guest again: (1) Is there in effect a ban, due to safety issues, on future extensions to third-rail electrification? - or is it just an industry-wide perception that it would involve too much hassle? - and why is there not an insistance on conversion of the existing third-rail routes? (and what about the DLR extension to Thamesmead?) ... and (2) not quite covered by your section about safety vs affordability, back in the final days of RailTrack, there was comment that the excessive time taken to investigate before releasing the lines to traffic was effectively 'safety-negative', in that it forced passengers on to inherently less safe means of travel (roads) - is this now taken on board, or is it just 'not to do with our brief'? Look forward to your next production, whatever and whenever ...
