I have a 19 month old parrotlet that stayed in the pet store for who knows how long. I've had him for exactly one month. I have been working with him for hours and hours a day with very little progress. I sit by his cage and feed him by hand and the whole time he is eating from my hand his eyes are wide and his feathers are slicked back. He's scared. As soon as he is done eating, he runs back into his cage as fast as he can. My question is, should I close his cage door and have him stay out with me? Will that make him more comfortable or will he just freak out and still try to get away? I don't want to stress him more than he seems to be stressed. I do really want a bond with him, though.

I have bought a parrotlet about three months ago. I made sure that he sees me every day for like 5 hours. I also tried to talk much to him but he is still really scared even when I put my hand in the cage to change the vegetables. He always fly away and I don’t really know what I should do anymore.

I’m sorry to hear this - It sounds like he wasn’t hand-fed. Anyway, I would encourage you to keep trying, parrots eventually come around. Have you watched my videos on how to tame a Parrotlet? I might also trying getting a second Parrotlet that is definitely tame- they teach the untame one that it’s ok.
