Chris, Thank you for your dedication and hard work. Netgate made a good decision to hire you. You serve as a bridge between Netgate and Pfsense community. 🙂

Christian, thanks for the KZbin channel. You can thank Tom Lawrence from Lawrence Systems for my subscription to your channel. I'm a HUGE fan of pfSense and have used & installed pfSense appliances for companies I've worked for, for almost 7 years. Looking forward to the new release.

I got a very unique problem, maybe you could help me with that. I've built a gateway group with 2 tiers (failover): Tier 1 is my main connection to the WWW, sadly that's VDSL with PPPoE. Tier 2 is an USB LTE Dongle, acting as an Ethernet connection. This Gateway Group is set as my default gateway. All traffic that's destined for the internet is routed (nat'ed) through an Wireguard tunnel. What works: The failover. If Tier 1 (PPPoE) fails all wireguard traffic will almost immediately be routed through Tier 2 (LTE). What doesn't work: The recovery. Tier 1 comes back up, Status - Gateways - Gateway Groups even shows that change, but Wireguard doesn't care and still flows through Tier 2. This causes Tier 2 to cause a lot of costs since the plan I've got for LTE is limited. The only RELIABLE way for me to cause traffic to go back into the right direction is: Manually disabling the Tier 2 (USB LTE) Interface. Have been fighting with this issue for months, any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Say you upgrade to the plus version, later on it's not free. Any way to go back to the CE edition (without reinstalling CE from scratch?)

Unfortunately, I can't upgrade from version 2.6 to 22, because they write to me quoting "So sorry, we don't save your region!" this is of course sad, of course I could bypass through a VPN, but I'm too lazy, I'll sit on 2.6

Could you do a video on getting the WireGuard application on Windows working via a local wifi bridge to pfSense? On my phone, I can get to both the internet and my local network through WireGuard. On a Windows 10 notebook, I can get to the internet, but I can't get to anything on the local network. I thought it might be because Windows said the tunnel was Public instead of Private. But, I managed to change that via the Registry. I also allowed the WireGuard application through Windows Firewall on both Public and Private connections. Still, I can't see the local network.

What is the preferred way to do a new, clean installation when you are on the "Home and lab" path of Plus (in case of future hardware-failure etc). Can I reach out to Netgate for a download URL? Or do I install CE-version and after that apply the activation token I received when upgrading?

Hi Christian My failover stopped working after upgrading to Pfsense 2.6. I have two ISPs configured as failover, tier 1 and tier 2. When my default ISP goes down, it does not switch to the second ISP, but in 2.5.2 it works perfectly. Therefore, I've rolled back to 2.5.2. Please, what's the problem and how can I solve it? Thank you

This is why the new free PF+ tier? "Support on pfSense CE installations not available after 12/31/2022" What is the benifit of free PF+ tier vs CE? (why switch open source to closed source)
@thepontiff75052 жыл бұрын
they went closed source because they dont want OPNSense looking at any of their code I guess plus they hate the free users as can be seen on their forums, subreddit, etc
@ChristianMcDonald2 жыл бұрын
Because if you already have paid support (TAC) on a pfSense CE installation, you as a customer are entitled through software assurance to an upgrade to pfSense Plus.

I want to ask the same question "What is the benefit of free PF+ tier vs CE? (why switch open source to closed source)" why I have to do that?
@ChristianMcDonald2 жыл бұрын
@@KristianKirilov 1) Access to more timely updates (pfSense Plus has three regularly scheduled releases per year, CE continues to be released on a “when it’s ready” cycle, just as it always has been). 2) Access to new value-add features that will be available only in pfSense Plus. Again, if you’re a home or lab customer these features will be available to you at no charge.

@@ChristianMcDonald As a home user of pfSense for years, I wouldn't have an issue paying for this if the cost was reasonable. Somethings are worth paying for in this world.

Found a fix if anyone else having this issue, Go to Command Prompt and execute this command "pkg-static clean -ay; pkg-static install -fy pkg pfSense-repo pfSense-upgrade" this fixed it.

Decided to install pfSense 2.6.0 CE, and build a new environment. When I get it stable, I'll upgrade to the professional version. Two things that are advances in my DIY router/firewall set-up: I upgraded to a CPU providing AES-NI for crypto-efficiency, and I wanted to make use of the ZFS on a clean install. Also I'm focused on designing the VLANs set-up better, so I can attempt using a smart switch. Looking for good results.
@ZoraciousDCree2 жыл бұрын
I'm impressed with the ZFS storage development for pfSense, it really is a sound path forward. The learning curve would be much more effective for me if Netgate could do a similar "channel" format for each package over time with all the upgrades. I get a little lost when reviewing the videos from 2 & 3 years ago, in referencing the way those particular pfSense menu items have changed over a time-line. One 'semi-channel' for DHCP and the areas of use and improvement; another for FW rules & aliases, a third for DNS, then for user/groups and security certificates, then VPNs, the diagnostics apps use -- and so on for the number of semi-channels that can be derived for the whole of pfSense's aggregated apps (it's more than just a firewall). You're presently doing this specifically with Wireguard -- and it's an asset as an information silo that shows the tech advancements. Is this a KZbin format-method you could adopt? I do something like this with Emby categorizing my video tech content at home, but you guys could do it much better!
