My ancestor was John P Clum, editor of Tombstone Epitaph and mayor of Tombstone. I believe he was a Sunday school teacher at this the First Baptist Church of San Dimas California during the '20s. Perhaps Earp came to visit him here from LA. On the current street view of the church, the mountain contours in the background line up.

Ladyrodgers you are very right it was in Colton, California. Photo was taken in front of St Salvador Catholic Church, 7th Street and "L" Street, South Colton. Trees look like Chinese Cherry Trees in the Winter. They grow very well in Colton. The original wooden church in the picture is gone, but replaced with a new one. Thank You. John Wayne explained that he would follow Erp all around the set. Wayne admired everything about him, getting down the way he walked, talked, and his whole persona. John utilized it in all his movies, and became successful.

I also seem to have a fascination with Wyatt Earp. I have heard that he was a very tall man and I am guessing he had nerves of steel since there have been reports that during the gunfight at the OK Corral, when bullets were flying, Wyatt Earp was very motionless and still. Wyatt Earp was focused on hitting his target. With most people, if you start shooting at them they would not be motionless and still. So, Wyatt Earp was not the type of man that many people were comfortable threatening. Wyatt Earp was a large man with nerves of steel. Not the type of man anyone would want to disrespect.

I have seen enough photos of Mr. Earp to say this looks completely authentic. I couldn’t speak with any expertise on the background, except that his attire and the absence of leaves on the trees suggests wintertime. By the time of this photo in the mid to late 1920’s paved roads were pretty common. Could the location be on a movie set? He was known to frequent them as a consultant. Just my guess!

When you live and go to the same church most of your growing up days, and are raised in a Catholic Church, especially, San Salvador Church in South Colton, CA. it is pretty hard to forget the church. I do not believe you need a church expert. However, I know where you are coming from. I am sure most Colton residences have old pictures of themselves in front of the church. It does look like an aged Wyatt Earp(1920s) posing for a picture while playing quoit. The clothes he is wearing look like they could easily have come from the 1880s, but are in mint condition and are a perfect fit. This would make me think that Earp could possibly be involved in the making of a Western, maybe as an extra. There have long been rumors of Earp being in some Silent films. He was friends with Willam S Hart and Tom Mix.

The item looks like quiot which is a pitch and toss game popular in the late 19th early 20th century. A number of these rings are pitched at a wooden X frame with pegs sticking up, and points are scored when a ring hitches over a peg. The more central the peg, the higher the point.

Ther item on the ground is called a "Quoit" Quoits s a throwing game similar to horseshoes where you throw a ring made of metal, rope, or leather, aiming at a peg stuck in the ground. the game was very popular in the late 19th and early 20th century in the usa, having been brought over from europe (England). this image was probably made in san Bernardino, Ca Where the Earps had relatives and Wyatt visited often when living in Los Angeles. Probably taken in the teens or twenties as the person seems to be elderly and Wyatt Earp would have been in his sixties and seventies at that time.

@@larrys-monkey-farmllpee7370 Larry, I have read and watched a few KZbin videos concerning J.H. Holliday's, supposed, transfer back to Griffin, Georgia. As a funeral professional for over 36 years, not to mention, growing up in the business, hearing stories of burials from many decades ago...I, frankly, doubt that Doc's body was ever relocated. Though, the embalming process was used during the Civil War, literally, in tents on the battlefield, it was very crude, at best. It hadn't been that many years from when Doc passed. Remember, the modern embalming process is NOT to preserve the body for long term...its to present the body in the best, possible, presentation and to eliminate any, potential bacteria or viruses that may remain on the body after death, that could be contracted by the family or those attending the viewing. Another words, the process is not like that of the ancient Egyptians. With that said, Doc was, most likely, buried in the ground for several weeks or longer, prior to his family, attempting to bring him back to Georgia. The deterioration of his tissues and internal organs would have created a horrendous odor (gas), not to mention, his features would have failed quickly. Frankly, I would not have wanted to have been the individuals hired to bring his body back, even by train in an unsealed pine box. It would have been, tremendously, unpleasant for ALL involved, trust me. It's my belief, only based upon my knowledge from the above facts that, Doc's family may have wanted the public to not know, exactly, where J.H. was interred, so grave robbers nor Western nostalgics, if you will, would be, less likely, to seek him out for, disrespectful purposes. Again...just must opinion. And, without exhuming both graves (current family's permission), we may never know the truth? By the way...either cemetery would have records, even an unmarked grave, as to where his body was placed. But they were, either paid funds to NOT provide this information or it was agreed by city officials at the time, that it was best to keep it a secret keeping, said characters that I mentioned above, away from the, actual, grave.

Wyatt Earp died in Los Angeles, in his house at 4004 W. 17th St. There is a Catholic Church located within easy walking distance at 4112 W. Washington Blvd. It is St. Paul's and the original building was built in 1917. I'm trying to find a photo of the original building. That could certainly be a hubcap he's looking at.

I wonder if that could be Colton, CA. I know that Virgil had a home there And I believe his parents lived in Agua Mansa, which is nearby.

I believe it is him. I also believe he did return to Tombstone, and based on his very quiet and calm persona, he did so without telling anyone. I bet he just wanted to go back and see it one more time in the 1920s as he was growing older, and after a while, quietly left the town that changed his life forever for the last time...... I would have loved to stand in front of that old man and shake his hand, and tell him thank you for the sacrifice you and your brothers made fighting evil, dangerous, violent men. Thank you sir for standing up to the gangs of outlaws that most were afraid to....you suffered and struggled most of your life, and now may you rest in peace.

I think it is a movie set from a John Wayne movie. He frequently went to see the film in production and gave tips to John.

Pretty sure that's in Pella, Iowa. One of his boyhood homes. The church is still there, just down from where he/his family lived.

It is a metal ring that was used in a throwing game similar to horse shoes. I think horse shoes became more popular because you didn’t have to buy them- everyone had old horse shoes laying around.

Maybe he did return to tombstone. The circle on the ground makes me wonder if it wasn't a marker for where the fight took place?

What if it's a Stage set? Wyatt worked as an adviser in early Hollywood..and somehow avoided getting caught on film (a peculiar mystery to me, how that oversight happened)

The photo looks familiar but it could be like another shot I've seen of him in the same pose and facing the same way. I agree, it's not Tombstone. Might be Flagstaff but I don't know that he ever was there again after Tombstone.

That ring he's staring at might be the rings attached to the ground to tie a horse at. I've seen them before. Or it could be a ring used to play a game something like horseshoes.

i'm a 28 year old guy from germany and after watching a western (i don't know which) some years ago, i did some wikipedia research. then i found out about josephine earp. her family-name is the same as mine and after seeing a side-portrait-photograph of her i was chilled because it looked like one of me. i guess i'm related to her :D sadly i have no historical background to it or any family trees.
