It see it brought up all the time. Every single article/video about Miyamoto mentions how he gets ideas for games from his hobbies. The two most common examples are that Zelda was inspired by him exploring caves and forests in the countryside as a child and Pikmin was inspired by his passion for gardening (not really according to this video).

I really hope this is the end of the Pikmin drought. Nintendo is going all-in on the marketing for this game, in some ways even more than they were for Tears of the Kingdom. Pikmin is one of those Nintendo IPs that feels both obscure and well known all at once. On one hand Pikmin 1 and 2 sold decently enough on the Gamecube that people certainly know about the franchise, but as shown in the video they didn't sell high enough that they were prioritized like the mega sellers such as Mario or Zelda (heck even Metroid got more games in the time between Pikmin 2 and 3, and that's a Nintendo IP that's only popular in the West, in Japan the series tends to always do poorly). Pikmin 3 mainly came about because HD made Miyamoto go "oh Pikmin would be perfect for this." Maybe if the Switch Pro or the Switch 2 (whatever they call the Switch successor) supports 4K then we'll finally see Pikmin 4 as Miyamoto seems to treat Pikmin as the franchise to really show off a console's power.

Must have been a slight mistake in the script, but yep you're right. In the beginning of Pikmin 1 Olimar says "this planet's atmosphere is comprised of poisonous oxygen!" I dunno if it's ever stated what Olimar's people actually breath, but if oxygen is poison to people of his planet maybe they breath something like carbon monoxide, which is poisonous to humans.

Its probably the concentration of oxygen that's hazardous to them. Pikmin are supposed to be similar to their own race, to the point where the Pikmin could turn Olimar into one of their kind, so his people probably just have a lower tolerance for it due to their planet having either less of it or lower pressure. Much like how low pressure makes it harder to breath, high pressure would do the opposite and potentially cause hyperoxia. Pikmin's Earth may be more like it was during the carboniferous period, where levels were as high as 35%. That could explain the giant insects and amphibians.

As I recall, after the Bad Ending you could still play that save file and continue to finish your ship, but there was no more time limit. I don't think you played as the pikmin-Olimar model though. People who bought Final Fantasy Tactics A2 may have only bought Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and *maybe* the 'mainline' Final Fantasy Tactics games, (which is its own spinoff line) but not the Final Fantasy game collection in its entirety; much like someone buying FFXIII-2 would get FFXIII, but not FF through FFXII, as most Final Fantasy 'mainline' games, dispite being numbered, are their own little universe\\submultiverse, with the games in the same universe\\submultiverse having a second number after the initial number. … Maybe using Final Fantasy games was a bad example… Anyway, I don't want to spoil newcomers. ----------- It's possible the "unused" plucking whistle mechanic's code in Pikmin (1) isn't unused in that game. It's quite possible that said code is called on by the notorious ドドロ (Smoky Progg). The secret (if you play the game without spoilers) boss has a cry\wail\whatever that uproots Pikmin within its radius, much like the old version of Olimar's whistle would. - So it's possible the ドドロ (Smoky Progg) pulls from the old whistle's code. If that is true, it could explain why the code is still in the final game.

I finally bought hey pikmin earlier this year since the 3ds was out the door and my walmart had tons of copies. the worker looked at me and just goes "...you sure you want that one?"

Well, the Pikmin 3 Deluxe version should break the trend. It is on Switch after all, so that could bump up numbers.
