I know very basic ASL. The alphabet and about 50 words. Knowing just that, I've been able to help several people. We drove past a family trying to tell a security guard they were deaf and please look at them when talking to them. The guard kept turning away. I had my brother stop and go back. Our school district taught all students the ASL Alphabet as we took in all the hearing impaired students from half our state.

@@Mr.L9 I was once reception manager in a hotel and had two young guests from abroad who were deaf. I told them, if they need something they should call me and tap on the mouthpiece with a pen so that I could come up to their room and help them. But I have a question: in case of emergency, how do you communicate with 911? Is there a special device you can use?

@@VIKTOR-ck3dx many daycares are starting to use sign language to communicate with baby's and toddlers that don't talk yet. My aunt and uncle were deaf. They had 12 kids together. The first three learned spoken language from the extended family. The younger 9 learned from their old siblings. Meanwhile in my town in another part of that state, the two children of a deaf couple were taken away because they were not deaf and the authorities thought it was inappropriate for deaf parents to raise children that were not deaf. The justification used was that and the belief that leaving them in that home environment would constitute child abuse. The case went through the courts and the parents never got their kids back. I lost track of the family when we moved from that town. That was 50 years ago.
