back in 2009 Denmark passed a law that allows Greenland to get independence whenever they want, but under the condition that majority of Greenland voters vote yes on Independence.

and under the condition, that they can show the ability to take care of their institutions. This is not just as simple as them voting for Independence. The proces would be, that they first need to vote for independance. Then they would have to negotiate what that independence would look like, and then have a new vote to see if the people would be happy with that deal.

Well that depends, one of the reasons American Samoa is a territory is because they want to protect their land rights for natives. There’s pros and cons to being a territory, one of the pros is you have more control over your land. Greenland isn’t like American Samoa because it has a lot of land and few people. So they may want to become a state. There’s a lot of factors that go into it though, look at how long Puerto Rico’s been debating this issue. They technically voted to become a state, but some people claim the voting was compromised and it was only a slight majority that wanted to become a state so there still a debate going on.

And respect if the natives say no, as that is their right even though you ignored and lied to them last time they did and smuggle nukes, chemicals and a reactor into their country after kicking them out of their homes. It would also be 74 Billion to give all 1 million dollars, to be fair it's a little more if it's after tax. i thank canada is in bad shape heading for a 1929 depression, over taxed, inflation far worse than united states they will want to join us, do we want another blue state is the question
@DamonNomad82
@DamonNomad82 Күн бұрын
The avoiding adding another "blue state" by Canada joining the US can be addressed in multiple ways. One would be to make Canada into multiple states and draw the state lines to make an even number of red and blue states from it. If that path were chosen, I would favor adding it as 6 states, 3 red and 3 blue. Another option would be to add Canada as 3 mostly autonomous commonwealths that would manage most of their own affairs other than military defense and foreign relations and would continue to elect their own parliaments to govern them rather than voting in US elections and would only pay taxes to their own elected governments (other than a modest amout to fund their per-capita share of the military defense budget). By making Quebec, the liberal parts of Canada and the conservative parts of Canada effectively "countries within a country", their way of life isn't disrupted too much...

There's a current legal battle going on with an Australian mining company that bought mining rights and has was subsequently blocked from commencing operations in Greenland after China acquired a majority stake in the company. There are a lot we Danes could and should be blamed for when it comes to our colonial past, and now in present time, Danish politicians have been dragging their feet and delaying, often trying to ignore the problems in Greenland, not out of racism, but because Greenland is so far away and the population so small, that throwing some money at it and then pretend that Greenland have self-rule and so must deal with it themselves, seemed to be the easy way out. But now to some actual facts and figures, not to address a multitude of things we need to correct, but specifically to address a possible Trump and US takeover of Greenland. So here we go, and my numbers are factual, like them or not. As it is now, there are around 30 areas where Greenland instantly would be able to set themselves free and could rule on their own but unfortunately cannot afford to without Denmark paying for it, like something as simple as having their own police and prison system. As it is, 60% of the Greenlandic government budget and spending's, including their new luxurious prison in Nuuk and expensive infrastructure, free health care, free day care, paid sick leave, the right to 52 weeks of fully paid parental leave, free University college and the right to live and work anywhere in the EU being a subsidy by the Danish Government. According to both the Danish PM and the Greenlandic PM, the discussion is not about Greenland totally cutting their ties to Denmark, but getting more independence, in the sense that they want to go from being more of a territory ruled by Denmark, to a real independent country within the realm of a "United Kingdom of Denmark" so to speak. It's also important to know, that with this small a population, Greenland would never be more than a territory under a US ownership, so this goes against everything the Greenlandic people want. In any case, despite of what Trump is saying, Greenland are actually 100% in control of their own resources, so they can mine and drill as much as they want and keep all the profits for themselves with no interference from Denmark, while Denmark is subsidizing Greenland with around $12,000 ( 87,000 Danish Crowns) per citizen a year, so also the younger people today actually receive reparations from Denmark every year for past and present wrongdoings, while the state that receives highest funding from the US federal government is Alaska at $8,000 per citizen which is very high compared to other states, and again, Greenland would only be considered a territory and not a state, should they join the USA. But it should be crystal clear that this is never going to happen. By meeting with Trump, the Greenlandic PM just want to make sure that Trump understand and respect this, and he will grant the USA the rights to patrol the waters as much as they want, and build a base more if they want, which is actually old news, because this possibility has already been agreed upon by the USA, Denmark and Greenland.
@Hasselhof175
@Hasselhof175 23 сағат бұрын
It is not entirely accurate to say that Greenland can mine and keep all profits from its resources without any connection to Denmark. Under the Greenland Self-Government Act of 2009, Greenland has full control over its natural resources, including mining and drilling activities. However, according to the same law, any revenue generated from these activities is offset against the annual block grant from Denmark. This means that as Greenland starts earning significant profits from resource extraction, the block grant of approximately 3.9 billion DKK (around $12,000 per citizen) will be gradually reduced by the equivalent amount. This provision ensures that Greenland can build economic self-sufficiency while maintaining financial stability during the transition. Therefore, the claim that Greenland can freely retain all resource revenues without any impact on the Danish subsidy is incorrect. Greenland’s financial arrangements with Denmark are designed to support the region’s autonomy while incentivizing economic independence.
@agffans5725
@agffans5725 23 сағат бұрын
@@Hasselhof175 . Well, you can hardly blame Denmark, if Greenland will rather collect reparations than gaining freedom by mining and drilling their own recourses, fact is that Denmark is not preventing them from doing so. The whole reasoning behind this, is for Greenland to be independent.

One of the WORST things Denmark has done on Greenland was probably the resettlement of the people of Uummannaq 1953. Which was done on _behalf of USA_ as a step in creating and expanding Thule AB. The US has a horrible history of mistreating indigenous peoples everywhere. Not exactly something that would encourage anyone to join USA. Though a part of Denmark, Greenland already has self rule, receives large subsidies from Denmark, and has two seats of 179 in our parliament, giving them influence on Danish politics in the entire realm. If they were usurped by USA, with 57000 inhabitants, they would never be made a state, just a territory with no say in important matters. Even if we were able to acquire Panama, Canada AND Greenland, we couldn't give them a choice between statehood or territory. Any and all of them would be acquired as a federal territory. If any of them would want to be a full state they would have to not only vote on it, but they would have to submit a state constitution to Congress that conforms to the US Federal Constitution. @@looneyville3as a Canadian with Free Healthcare, i honestly think you have a misunderstanding on what we mean by free. Sure it's paid out via taxes. But EVERYONE gets ass to these free services. Healthcare here isn't decided by companies whos sole purpose is to make a profit. I've once been to see my family 4 days in a row. Didn't pay a single dime. Break your arm? See family Family Doctor abd get an Xray the sane day from Lifelabs. Then go back in the next day to see your Doctor for results. And then we have education. You can apply to go to a school not within your area and here in Ontario we also have Catholic schools which typically offer better education from my experience. So if your home school is horrible, simply apply to another school. School choice. Its brilliant. The Public schools in my area went full on LTGBQ and then the Catholic schools got filled up over night. My son goes to a Catholic school for that reason. Damn I love having School choice.

The typical pattern for the US to take in a new territory is to pay their debts and grant citizenship to the residences. If Greenland secedes from Denmark, money will become part of that deal. The US would then just absorb that debt. So Denmark will get paid either way.

FAKE.... ofc we want to be independent in Greenland - but only when the time i right and that will not be in 2025. I am a Greenlandic Inuit living in Denmark and most of us have Danish ancestors. Among the about 60.000 ppl living in my country only 35.000 are being real Greenlandic - rest are foreingers from Denmark, Asia, Eastern Europe, etc.. We will never be a part of the USA - we have noticed how you treat your Indigenous peoples in many states incl the Inuits i Alaska. And USA military have been in Greenland since 1940´s..... so what is the point. If they want more military there.... send them - but NO occupation..... we don´t want or need that. The polls only shows, that we want our independence... not a new imperialist country to take over. By the way.... we are "member" of NATO through Denmark.

You can look at it from a political view point or from a business view point, but they both benefit the people of Greenland 1) Denmark isn't getting screwed over, it's what happens when you neglect the citizens of your territories & they get fed up with it. Plus Denmark will save $1 BILLION a year by not having to subsidize Greenland anymore that they can instead spend on the Danish people. 2) Another way to look at it as a small company that doesn't have the capital to expand it's production in order to survive & is taken over by a larger company that can take them to new heights. Either way, the Greenland residents will flourish with a huge investment into it's infrastructure providing better jobs,, better living conditions, and having a say in its future.

The area North of Greenland is Ice pack for most of the year. It's also a relatively long way to the Russian Arctic coastline. NATO submarines regularly patrol in the Arctic Ocean already. Ownership of Greenland doesn't have any real impact on the strategic balance in the Arctic. It just reduces or eliminates the possibility of Chinese companies being granted mining rights in Greenland.
