These cars will pilot an open, flexible passageway between cars in an effort to increase capacity, improve safety, and decrease asymmetrical car loading. The first articulated subway trains in NYC was the Triplex of which the first 4 units were delivered and tested in 1925 and the rest in 1927,1928. for the Brooklyn Manhattan Transit Company. Then in the 1930s other experimental articulated subway trains were delivered until 1940.

This has made my day! I’m so excited that the R211T’s are finally here! I had heard rumors that the MTA was gonna scrap the whole thing but this is proof that those rumors were wrong. Very wrong! I can’t wait to see them on the road and to ride them while they’re testing. I think this is gonna help riders here, especially as more people keep on coming back to the NYC Subways. Chicago Rapid Transit had four 'open gangway' cars delivered in 1948 (numbwred #5001 to #5004 they were later renumbered #51 to #54, and ave since been retired. I unerstand that the Trolley Museum in South Elgin has one - but more recently Illinois Railway museum has one (I don't know if it is the same car or not). CTA never got any like them after they took over in 1948.

WE can't wait until the Brand New R262/AS for the A devisin iRT lines. IM hearing a lot of people are complaining about the R62AS back on the Pelham 6 line instead of the R142as on the Pelham 6 line and now off the Pelham line to the 7 Flushing line and the Jerome Ave 4 line.

There are sections of track where the railcars twists in ways that worry me about those gangways ripping or unbalancing the car itself. On freight train track where there are wide curves and turnouts it’s not a big deal but the NYC Subway is full of twisty surprises. Let’s see if they pass the test.

What is so remarkable? The BMT Triplex cars built in the 1920's by Pressed Steel Car Co. had a "pass through". I remember riding on them once or twice.

The R46s are going, no worries lol. But due to Broadway being the last to get CBTC, from the looks of it, Broadway may be stuck with R68s for a while. All CBTC efforts on the B division are going towards IND lines, meaning SMEEs cannot run there. 8th and 6th Ave lines in Manhattan alone seal the deal. Of course we also know now that Queens Blvd was the first, and Fulton St, Crosstown, and Culver are also up for CBTC.

@@nezarionbraxton8790 The answer to this is contingent on two "if"s. 535 base order + 640 first option order + 437 second option order = a grand total of 1612 cars. But MTA hasn't accepted the second option order yet. It's possible they may not go for it at all. Which means the grand total would be 1175 cars. But they usually go for all the option orders. How many of these would be open-gangway cars? The only guarantee is the 20 cars we're getting now. If the tests with these 20 cars go well, then the entirety of the following option orders will be entirely open-gangway. Meaning either 660 or 1,097 cars.
