I just got my new puppy (GSD) on Saturday. I am choosing to only crate her at night. During the day, because I work at home, I am able to take her out often enough after I know when she has eaten or drank to get her to eliminate. Also, my dogs first night in her crate was as expected but not too bad. She wimped and whined for about 20 minutes and then settled down. She then did it again around 4 am for a few minutes and again around 6am. Then the second night...I was astonished. She whimpered somewhat softly for a few minutes and then was quiet the whole rest of the night. This is my second GSD. I just don't remember how we house trained her. I know we also had a crate for her at night and during the day hours when we were working. But she was not in the crate between the time we got home from work and the time we went to bed.

Question: when you actually bring a puppy home, from far away (~ half a day) by car, should the puppy stay in a crate or in your arms, how often should stops be made, how to interact with puppy on the road etc? Thank you!

Where is the best place to put the main crate? I have two adult dogs (I adopted them as adults) and I'm getting a puppy soon. I thought I would put the crate near the other dogs in our main living area. But we also watch TV there and hang out a lot .....is it better to crate a puppy somewhere quieter ? We don't have loud dogs and we are quite low key.
@fleurelizabeth51202 жыл бұрын
Hi, I watched your other video which outlined introducing the crate more slowly, with the door open. Is that for daytime only ? I really want to use the crate from the first night

Hi Will, I’m thinking of getting a Chesapeake Bay Retriever puppy within this year/early next year. This is going to be my first dog that I train and fully own. My reason for this picking this breed is because I live a pretty active lifestyle. I boat, hike, camp. Since the chessie naturally has a love for water and never ending endurance I thought it would be perfect for this. I’m trying to shy away from the other retriever breeds because they are too friendly and also want a dog who can alert and protect me. I did think about the giant schnauzer but their grooming needs are too much for me. What do you think of the chessie? Also can you make a vid dedicated to them?
@1packatak3 жыл бұрын
I can tell you a friend of mine has had Chessies for many years. They show them, trial in obedience and also train/trial them in hunting tests. Their dogs have been amazing. Really great dogs for someone who is active like you. And of course, can be a bit stubborn, so follow the advice on this page on establishing leadership.

Is there any chance you could take on a dog from DASH rescue in Greece, with behavioural issues, and once trained, offer it for adoption as a foster home? The woman who runs it has 500ish dogs, on a tiny budget, AND 300ish street dogs she feeds and desexes. I am sure you could find a number of behaviour problems, amongst the dogs beaten, shot, run over and starved. This rescue is pretty hopeless doing videos and PR. Too busy doing the rescues. You could maybe choose 3 interesting cases, and have a lovely week on Greece AND do a video of the really sweet dogs also needing homes. I live in Oz, and am unable to do anything, physically, to help. UK is one of the places that do adopt from Greece. At the moment, stats show dogs in adopting country take 3 months to get forever home. If in Greece, average is 3 years or more - with many dying in rescue, of old age. Terribly sad.

I have honestly found more knowledge on how to raise a puppy/dog from your channel than any book I have read on the topic. Not sure if you have done a vid about diet yet for puppies and adult dogs, but would you do one soon or is that not in your wheelhouse? Keep it up!

I'm going to be flying to pick up my Puppy, and these 3 reminders honed in on how I planned to spend that day getting to know my new pup. Crate training and allowing them to associate with the crate in a good way before the flight. Feeding and proper potty breaks and allowing them to be comfortable and happy while still setting the expectations off the get go!

Hi, I Love your training vids. You are Numero 1 in my book. Quick question. Should my mini bull terrier puppy sleep in the crate with a blanket or is it ok to let the puppy sleep on the plastic tray? I'm asking because I'm worried the puppy can chew and swallow the blanket overnight...I'm also worried that if he sleeps on the plastic tray it will hurt his bones and muscles. I will keep him in the crate in the kitchen while I'm in my bedroom fromm day 1 as you suggest. Thank you very much. 🙏

I'm honestly surprised you support crate training being in UK. I thought all of Europe was against that stuff going as far as requiring something like 100sqft room being the minimum area you can lock a dog into :P

Would you recommend having your puppy in your bedroom in the crate at night? Our 11 week puppy loves the crate in the day, but cries non stop if she's not with us at night. Thanks!
@mushroombird94002 жыл бұрын
Our new puppy seems very thirsty. He drinks often throughout the day - and he plays very hard as well. How do we stop the water three hours before bed and still play with him? Or do we only walk him and play with him before that three hour time limit?
@LokeyLiesmyth2 жыл бұрын
Found this 15hrs in with my new puppy. Unfortunately he is a chihuahua and I’m in Canada, so his pre training hasn’t worked well as we’ve hit our March second winter. But I’m hoping within a week while I get him used to the crate and pads at the door we can adjust to creating him his den and outside routine every 4hrs.

Just to clarify. So its ideal to get up to let dog out around 3am to try prevent them doing toilet in their crate? If they are whining/crying should you still go down to let them out?

If your puppy cries every 2-3 hours, is it okay to take them out to go potty? I have a Bull Terrier pup who cries every 2-3 hours and every time I take her out she pees and then goes back to sleep.
@willathertoncaninetraining3 жыл бұрын
Hey Kayla, thanks for watching. We'd highly recommend taking your puppy out every hour to go to the toilet or whenever they wake up from a nap. This will pre-empt them learning that if they cry they get your attention as this could become a learned behaviour. At night time to best to removing their water a couple of hours before bed and letting them out for before you put them to bed as this will help them hopefully get through the night without waking you up. Hope this is helpful!

You should not remove water. A puppy should have access to water 24/7.
