In Medieval 2 Total War there is this same mechanic. If you surround an agent from another faction with other 8 agents (like priests, merchants, assassins) and try put a 9th agent were the enemy is, the enemy will simply die. And that is a nice exploit. Now here this in AoE 2 is kind of the same thing, as the units don't stack into each other, some of them die for not having enough space. I guess this is to ensure no units would go inside trees or something like that. In 256x mod it can happen a lot if units are too fast.

It looks like it's only leaving four units because those teutonic knights have a size of 1/4 of a tile. This could mean the ram is just being unable to find space for more than four units and simply deletes the rest.
