@@AsheeBree Thanks for the suggestion, we've done a collab with Birdtricks before, and we love the work they do teaching pet owners the basics of positive reinforcement training and behavior modification. We have years of experience with corvids and we also have some great contacts who have decades of experience with raven behavior specifically. With the combo of our knowledge and our expert friends, we're looking forward to a great future for these three beauties.

Oh !!I am so happy you & yours have all three of them.. In the last shot, you could see the girls have started looking out for the other one, in the form of little grooming / reassuring gestures. The little fella is boisterous, curious & clever, He is precious. if all three click, it will be so good for their QOA, & could prove interesting in teaching about this bird and its intricate social skills, memory & love , adoration of bling { all things shiny }.. The little man seemed like he is a sweet fella. Just Adorable

My favorite quip about ravens is this, "if you see a big black bird and think it might be a raven then it's probably a crow because when you see how big a raven is you won't 'think' it's a raven, there will be no doubt in your mind"
@3nertia
@3nertia 4 жыл бұрын

I was once on my way to work and while passing by the side of the drive saw a black bird. At first I thought it was a crow, because they're really common, but as I actually got up next to it I immediately realized it couldn't have been because it was at least twice the size of any crow I've ever seen. It HAD to have been a raven, it was MASSIVE.

I will never forget seeing a Raven in the zoo at Innsbruck. You know how some people insist on poking sticks thru the wires of animal cages, trying to get their attention? Well, I was astounded to see the tables turned, with the Raven manipulating the tourists by poking sticks out of the cage to get their attention. And it was working! At that time, being from NZ, I had never seen a Raven, and I was so impressed by its very evident intelligence.

@@animalwondersmontana We need to buy you some mini cams so you can't do some 'under cover' videos and the animals won't realize they are being recorded. Wouldn't that be fun? Back in November we got a sudden cold snap. That morning somebody found an adult flammulated owl with frozen tail feathers and unable to fly. Somehow I ended up watching over it while we waited for someone to pick it up and get it to the wildlife rehaber. From what we were told it was hypothermic (no surprises there) and should have migrated several months prior. Maybe it was that warm fall we had. Anyway after the rehaber got it on the mend she sent it off to another rehaber further south so he could continue along the migration route. Definitely one of the highlights of my stay at Trapper Creek JC. Come to think of it maybe you know the rehaber I’m talking about. She’s kind of eccentric and has been doing it for decades here in Montana. She even has a book that she wrote but I don’t remember the title. Anyway just thought I’d share!

The first raven I ever saw was at the Grand Canyon. He landed on the ground maybe 20 feet from me, looked right at me and started talking. It think he was saying "Welcome to the west, easterner, and welcome to the Grand Canyon" I was completely blown away by his size and incredible beauty. I can only imagine the time and care for 3 large birds. Companionship is so good for them since they are so social. I took in a wild adult crow for 5 1/2 weeks with a broken wing. What a handful! Tons of poop, very little trust and all the time trying to create an environment so time can repair the damage. Luckily, as far as I can tell, the crow made a successful recovery.

To tell the gender look under the tail at the vent with the bird standing. If the edges turn up it's a male (smile) If the edges turn down, or more of a straight line, it's usually a female. This is so the vents fit together when touching as they mate to form an O & exchange body fluid.

The place I grew up was very remote. It all started when I was 8. I liked climbing trees and often would take my lunch "up top" as dad called it. I didn't like the crust of my sandwhich and I would have an apple core left over. I always seemed to drop a couple chips or occasionally, although I was much more careful, part of a cookie would get away from me. This did not escape the attentions of a young raven in the area. She started hanging out at lunch time. I would set the scraps on branches around me and Dizzi (I named her Iridize but Dizzi stuck) I started seeing what I could get her to do. Like, push things over to get at a piece of food, hop through a pipe. Find a treat amongst a bunch of toilet paper rolls. She liked the little games and puzzles I set up for her. I was a bored kid with time to burn. She wouldn't let me touch her much, but if I was outside, Dizzi was always near by, talking, popping, plinking, and generally imitating any sound she heard, Including my giggle. That was many years ago. I live in a different part of Alaska now but there are a couple ravens that come around and chat but, none of them giggle though. They are still into eating my lunch leftovers.

I have always had a soft spot for Ravens they are one of my fave birds as you say they are very intelligent and learn fast 😹 I have here in Australia the magpie, crow and the Aussie Karawong( not sure of how to spelt at the moment My biggest problem was they would swoop me at nesting time but as it was my yard they were nesting we had to come to a compromise 😹😹😹 I found they love the dry cat food and just like my cats they were fussy too 😹😹 I tried a cheaper brand on them and I mixed it with what they were already getting so I could swap it out over time 😹😹 well they were not having this at all they ate the good stuff and left the home brand alone 😹🤗😹😹 just as well the ants were not as fussy 😹😹😹 they don’t eat from it all day they come in of a morning along with 6 other breeds of birds and feed and then they go off hunting for food and other such things 😊😊then they are back off and on during the day if hunting is not good specially at nesting season and then I fill the tray again in late afternoon for their dinner time 😹😹 my neighbour has the bird bath right next to the feeder so they gave daily water specially as we are in the grips of a drought here in Queensland Outback The up side is they don’t swoop me or postie anymore and every year they bring their young to introduce them to us 😹😹 If I do forget to put out food in the morning the fly up onto my table on the front veranda and pinch the food out of the cats dish while they are being watched by the cats and no my babies don’t go after them at all 😊😊😊 the birds now nest in the woodland and not in my trees 😹but they all come everyday and not always to eat sometimes it’s just to check in on me give me a song or two and then fly off 😹😹

Looking forward to seeing what things you use for enrichment. I remember crows bringing gifts of shiny objects to people so they must enjoy selecting things to organize or just move about. Will they build nests if you offer materials? Would they watch videos? Do they like music?

Nice one.. I feed a wild, one eyed Currawong (similar bird) that visits sometimes. It too catches food I throw to it...
