There's a reason why Red Velvet choruses sound unique from a vocal perspective amongst K-pop girl groups in a way that most just can't quite put their finger on. It's all in their vocal tones, which is why whenever one member is missing, it creates a bigger difference than when a member is missing from most other groups. This explanation by Christian DeCastro in the comment section of their Milky Way live video is the best that I've come across so far. It's long, but it's bang on and will help you understand what you're hearing when it comes to Red Velvet: Great Harmony capability, but also great Harmonic and vocal power structure. That's why even when they sing the same note (unison choruses) there is an incredible blend. Let me explain. Red Velvet has at least three tones with different harmonic structure, that makes at least three different instruments of an orchestra: - Wendy and Irene: round tones. (Wendy in fact can do any other tones too because of her technique) - Seulgi: mainly nasal tone. - Joy and Yeri: mainly laringeal tones. These three tones complement each other well because each one provides a different harmonic structure to the note, so they don't cancel each other or make unwanted extra resonances, just as 3 different instruments work together. When harmony is added, this quality explodes in full. The other reason is diversity of pitch power zone: - Irene and Yeri: Low to middle range power. - Joy: full Middle range power - Seulgi: Middle and upper range power. - Wendy: All range power capability, but when group vocals come, she is placed in her upper soprano range. So in harmony, they cover the power of all necessary pitch range. Everybody is in their power range with ease, and the voices energy are in perfect balance along the spectrum of frequencies. This combination of qualities inside a single girl group just doesn't exist elsewhere. There are other groups with incredible gifted singers as individuals, but the usual case is that they share the same power range or type of tone, so group vocals doesn't sound this complete.

Seulgi's voice is so suited to do a truly mournful cry. It always carries such a level of emotion. Now I am not saying that it always sounds 'sorrowful' or 'down', but her voice and tone adds so much emotion to a song, be it up or down.

It's obvious that Red Velvet is the best. This is because among all idol aspiring girls, they were at the top from the beginning. At that time, SM Entertainment was the most influential and largest company in Korea. Of course, it is a place that all aspiring idols aspire to be. They are a member who was selected from such a place after overcoming a huge competition rate of dozens to one. Historically, the prettiest and most popular members, the best singers, and the cutest members were mostly members of SM agencies. It's like Real Madrid football club in its heyday. The players there are only the top players in the world. At that time, SM was in that exact position among the 3rd generation girl groups. Naturally, Red Velvet was the most recognized and popular in Korea. Of course, in the war of third-generation girl groups, other giant companies such as JYP's Twice and YG's Blackpink were strong competitors. The reason they are not widely known overseas is because they faced several negative factors. Around the time the overseas market opened, Wendy fell off the stage during a stage performance and almost died. She received hospital treatment for almost a year. Red Velvet performs live on stage. However, even if not, this is a team with no problems. Because everyone knows. Even if it is performed live, the quality is guaranteed. Because there is no point in criticizing in the first place. Moreover, Red Velvet’s musicality is diverse. There is no time to get bored or bored. Because they have the ability to digest all genres. Depending on the team's intention or taste, there may be things they don't do, but there's nothing they can't do.

Red Velvet was offered a U.S. distribution deal by Capitol Records back in 2017 or 2018, but they turned it down. I'm guessing they figured promoting in the States when they WANTED to rather than when they were obligated to was much more appealing to them. Capitol ended up distributing their label-mates NCT.
@Panorama-memory Жыл бұрын
@@riffgroove I don't know the content. I heard it for the first time. However, in my experience, the contract depends on the content of the contract. They probably didn't like the terms of the contract.

@Panorama-memory That's the thing about signing a U.S. distribution deal. You HAVE to promote there on a regular basis. I remember when Rose from BP released her solo album. She did like 3 music show appearances, and then had to fly about 15 hours to New York for ONE television appearance. I don't know how much time you've spent on planes, but jet-lag after a 15 hour flight is no joke.

For fans waiting to hear from them, THIS song felt like it cemented their place as top tier group. They had plenty of great songs already. But then they sort of disappeared. After several songs in 2021, including PSYCHO, we heard nothing new from them in 2020 (and keep in mind other groups are exploding on the internet during the pandemic). In 2021, all we got was Queendom. So here was they epic group with one of the worlds best catalogs of great music,... and they were like not making new music (as a group). Finally in 2022, they had new music all set for release. Their comeback concert was set for mid-March at Seoul Olympic Park, a sort of open air city park concert venue in the center of the city where thousands of fans could attend. When Irene, Joy, and Yeri tested positive for COVID-19. The concert everyone was waiting for was basically canceled ("postponed"). But thankfully, they released THIS!!! The song has everything you were waiting for. A dance-pop song incorporating "intense trap beats" and "string-like melodies", including a sample of the Bach arrangement "Air on the G String" (which is that 30 second opening tune). It is supposed to also have the same chord progression as Gershwins "I got Rhythm". But I don't really notice it. As for the MV, it was what fans wanted. Those Creepy bird-like creatures dancing with the girls, The flower metaphors, the harmonies, the visuals were all there. It may have been their most eagerly awaited re-appearance EVER!! And it delivers. And just to give example of HOW BELOVED this group is,... other K-pop groups openly say how much they love Red Velvet (and that is high praise coming from a very competitive community).

After listening to them for a while I find that Seulgi Wendy and Joy all have distinctive tones to their voices, but Joy stands out for me. She kind of sounds like the female version of Haechan from NCT. I would love to hear duet of those two.
@riffgroove Жыл бұрын
Joy is affectionately known as "The Tone Fairy" in Korea. It's very "Disney-esque." Every OST she's ever recorded, and she's done over a dozen of them, chart well.

Oooh I hope the album listening party is Chill Kill because that album is incredible, honestly imo the best kpop album to come out in 2023! In particular I think you’d adore underwater! But every song on that album is incredible, no skips! Thanks so much for the reaction, always love seeing you support our RV girlies! 😊❤️

Red Velvet would be diminished without any one of them. Each of their voices and personas add something to the integral to the whole. Would any 4 of them sound great? Of course - but they would not be Red Velvet.

As much as I love "Psycho" and "Chill Kill," for me personally, FMR is their crowning moment. Even nearly 2 years after it's release, this song still provokes an emotional reaction in me every time I hear it. And the sample you hear is "Orchestral Suite #3 - Air on the G-string" by Johann Sébastien Bach.

The bach musical piece.. this is what we call good use of samples.

I find this to be such a fascinating song and the MV is stunning right? That sample is from JS Bach's Suite No 3 (Air on G String). I really love Bach and it was so cool to see how they used that snippet and wove it in. There is also an SM Classics orchestral version which they do with some tracks from various artists under the label. And I feel "regal" is an excellent description of their style (even when they are trying to kill you). And then they are so dorky in real life, I love the contrast :D

Meh, intro schmintro hahaha jk. But really I'm so glad you shared it with us as is, because Feel My Rhythm is SO SPECIAL and I'm SO glad you are checking out the song this way because it's true that the MV can be quite overwhelming - it's just a completely additional layer of artistry, it's absolutely incredible. I really second the suggestion to check out the Seoul Philharmonic SM Classics version of this song, it's such a beautifully made video, I really loved it. It's interesting how it's a string piece turned into a pop song and taken back to the orchestra like :O hahaha You've got to watch the recording behind - there's an entire orchestra of Seulgi layers. All of them do this, but if you watch the recording behind it's soooooooo fun to see them each building their part of the song. I do think they each bring such a beautiful color to the blend of vocals, and Seulgi's lovely, warm, dark, round tone is unique within the vocal mix for sure. But again - they all bring something special. Joy's airy bright tone with her unique qualities, Yeri's tone that's in some ways is a meeting place between Joy and Irene's tones - she's so special with a beautiful simplicity and vulnerability in her sound, Irene's vocal that is soooo beautifully neutral and has that slight huskiness to it, Seulgi who sounds like a bell - just so clear and warm, and then Wendy's powerhouse of skill as well... when they all come together it's just magical.

There's another element to Red Velvet music videos that fans notice. But reviewer rarely comment on for some reason. And that is the creepiness factor from just what is going on in their videos. Sometimes we see them look dark. But usually I think they are filmed as angelic figures in a bright landscape. But there is all of this creep scary stuff going on. At some point in their videos, you are definitely afraid of them,.. that look into the camera is not always a loving one, I think. If you think that maybe they just murdered someone,.. THEY DEFINITELY JUST MURDERED SOMEONE,.. and now they're all dancing around happy again. like Chill Kill, right? Perfect example. It's a creepy element that always seems to be there. Watch their videos and see if I'm wrong.

I think you are right about Seulgi. Her voice is SO distinctive. I mean, you can hear it, even in the harmonies. You can literally hear her tone in the mix. Early on, they showed up on a couple of TV shows as a threesome. Seulgi might have been the one missing. But they did perform several numbers as a threesome. Does anyone remember the name of the show/s??? It has to be somewhere on KZbin.
