With a name like Rewind, missed opportunity to use slow-mo shots in reverse. A balloon popping, a waterfall, steam trains, there's so many things that could make great idents with a cohesive theme to the channel name.

Traditional TV is not dead yet, so it's great to see a new channel being launched.
@itogi7 ай бұрын
Also, that feel of emptiness is probably due to the use of AI.
@lucymorrison7 ай бұрын
traditional TV still has a lot of life left in it, at least I'd hope. I'm part of Gen Z, and I pretty much only use traditional, linear TV (aside from using streaming services to watch linear TV over the internet). Streaming is only really a catch-up service for me, the overload of choice and rising cost of streaming is really unappealing imo, and it's nice to have reliable, free television with a dedicated schedule that's no hassle for me to tune into.

The idents are quite impressive for what will inevitably be a small niche channel. Reminds me a little bit of the classic BBC2 idents.

The ident of a TV in the sea is shocking. Have you ever met someone who has thrown a fully charged cathode-ray-tube in to a bowl of water and lived to tell the tale?

I rather suspect there's some satire going on here with statements against old versus new - Jungle "I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here!" - Red "Gogglebox" - Sea "Blue Planet" and so on. Subtle. Perhaps too subtle. I also suspect that the old telly is looking around the modern landscape.

Good to see a new channel, with a decent identity. Luckily I have just dumped my Freesat box in favour of my old retired and luckily 'not yet thrown away' Sky+ HD box (because Freesat has dumped GREAT! channels etc.) and can receive Rewind TV (EPG 190) as an FTA channel. Just watched a great old 'World in Action' about the 1960's record business. It was absolutely fascinating!

I like the idea of these. The only things I'd change are to replace the ending sting with a simple 'Rewind TV' text at the bottom of the screen, so viewers have a bit more time to spend in the environment. Also, having more things happen around the environments & having the eyes further emote can go a long way in adding further character.

What’s the manual tuning frequency on free to air satellite 📡 on 28.2 east? Sounds like a channel worth manual tuning in? Maybe Adam do a content review if the channel schedule, what shows are they showing etc. someone was saying some very old episodes of world in action 😅that would be interesting plus that itv would be willing to sell rights on to them.

Rewind TV is a channel I think will slowly but surely grow as those who want to see old school programming from their generations will be very happy. Also, for their first set of idents, these are a good start.

@ShadowTVNetwork I’ll give you that one. But Rewind TV is still very new and considering Traditional TV is slowly moving towards online streaming, the older generations will appreciate Rewind TV, though i do agree Talking Picture TV does it better.

Love to see accent Emmerdale Farm from the 70’s and those Coronation Street episodes too. ITV 3 started the classics repeats in the mid to late 80’s. All Coronation Street episodes exist and almost all Emmerdale Farm ones do but I think they might be a very small number mislaid and lost. It’s a pity ATV and Central in the early days didn’t care much for archive even expensive the muppets shows ended up in the skip 😮

Turns out ITV and BBC has a endless amount of programmes that you can run a channel with reruns of them 😂. Why does it look like a random Sky channel from the 2000s that just relaunched.
@lucymorrison7 ай бұрын
Yeah, the "random channel with a one word name that shows legacy shows from ITV and the BBC" shtick is very reminiscent of early digital TV when Sky would pretty much let anyone onto their channel list to bolster their number of digital channels
@benjohnson31787 ай бұрын
It wouldn't be able to launch on Sky Stream. You have to show a certain amount of HD content to be allowed on Stream. Obviously Rewind TV is showing non HD content and so can't launch on Stream. It's the same reason Talking Pictures TV is not on Sky Stream. The channel is due to launch on Freesat next week. The Freeview launch looks likely to be in June where it's likely to run from 6pm-Midnight.

In my opinion, Rewind TV may have a chance to turn the table for viewer's who enjoy Classic television. When i think of rewind, i weirdly think about Itv 3. The winner of My ident review has to go to Jungle, it has the older style of the channel 4 idents such as the Diner ident, i like it very much.

I dont think they were made with AI. I think they were made by one person, with very little idea as to what the client was after. I reckon they were shown the logo, told that they were eyes, and that the channel was about old TV, and then told "make us some idents".

That trailer from Rewind TV. Are some of the clips (if not all) being AI upscaled? So much of it looks soft where it shouldn't be, especially the stuff shot on videotape. EDIT: Yeah, if they're going to use AI image generators for their own idents (The TV in Lounge definitely is AI generated, no television has had a layout of buttons like that), they're probably going to use it on their programming output as well. It's unfortunate. What's more unfortunate is that these idents could work if they actually had people work on them. They have idents like Sea and no one thought "You know, adding fish could make this look a lot better". Have the eyes react to a tumbleweed strolling along in West. Hire people, rather than rely on an AI generator that makes all of this so utterly bland and boring.
@lucymorrison7 ай бұрын
yeah, at first I was doubting the fact that they used AI, but it seems incredibly obvious now, there's no way they aren't; so many of the finer details are blurry or slightly off-looking in the idents, and it would seem that from a comment under this video from someone who's been watching the channel complaining about the programs being soft and smoothened, they're most likely also using AI upscaling. Sad. Hopefully they get their act together, I feel like they're probably gonna die of low viewership if they keep putting bugger-all effort into their channel. Why watch Rewind with blurry pictures (and apparently bad frame skipping) when Yesterday and Talking Pictures TV are right there on Freeview and are much better maintained, doubt that they're gonna put much money into good programs over the long haul if they couldn't be bothered to commission actual idents.
@Lynxxylynxx7 ай бұрын
Also I do gotta bear in mind these idents are for the older generation so they don't want much to focus on just something simple to let them know new programming is starting

Hey Adam, could be a great channel but there are problems with the picture quality on some series' and films. Have been looking in over the last couple of weeks and there seems to be a lot of picture smoothing or soap opera effect applied to a lot of content. It's also causing dropped frames causing the picture to stutter a little. This was very evident on The Prisoner and Department S. Just watched a bit of Shine On Harvey Moon and there was stutter on that as well. Very disappointing. I was really looking forward to this channel. It's unwatchable at the moment.
@anthonyperkins75567 ай бұрын
The stuttering on the test transmission has been removed and has gone from the programme playback server. The video frame refresh rate on certain programmes is 60 fps, the original B&W / colour videotapes, and 16mm / 35mm film programmes have possibly been remastered for HD 1080p @ 60fps, hence why some programmes run rather smooth than the regular 25fps of vintage videotape programmes and 24fps of film.
@garytilford65037 ай бұрын
@@anthonyperkins7556 I watched the start of The Prisoner last night at 9pm and there was stutter or judder or skipped frames (whatever you want to call it) all over the place and it was still unwatchable. I have picture smoothing turned off on my TV.
@lucymorrison7 ай бұрын
judging by the fact their idents seem likely to be using AI, could the vaseline effect be due to AI image upscaling for programs they don't have HD transfers of? One giveaway for AI upscaling is that kind of blurry and overly smooth effect, you have to approximate when adding details that weren't there in the first place, of course.

A little on the boring side for me these are, the visuals are nice, don't get me wrong but we could do with more happening in them, with the sea one for example, a few fish swimming about or some other sea creatures added to it wouldn't go amiss. I like the use of colour with them all but very much a case of what you see is what you get here!

Rewind TV isn't on Streaming or Freeview yet so not many will watch
@lucymorrison7 ай бұрын
keeping it off of streaming for the time being is fine, but yeah, a channel like this needs to be on Freeview, as a channel based around classic programming, inevitably a large majority of its audience will be older people, a lot of whom only watch traditional TV (hence streaming not being a big deal here), many of whom might not have Sky either, as a lot of people, especially older citizens who might be living off of pensions are cutting off unnecessary service fees.
@garytilford65037 ай бұрын
It's being broadcast free to air on satellite, you don't need Sky. My Sony Bravia TV has a satellite input for Freesat but you can also find everything else that is free on general satellite.

@lucymorrison7 ай бұрын
also, yeah, these do wreak of AI "art". AI images and videos have a distinct style, one that's pleasant enough at a glance, but souless and lacking in detail upon further inspection. I really hope AI doesn't become common in TV, both for programs and idents. The filmmakers, actors and artists that've shaped television ever since its very inception are far more creative and talented than any computer could ever be.

Pausing at 3:00 to say I love you said they feel hollow. I felt that same thing too, then I started to scrutinise the images further and noticed they were seemingly AI-generated stills with the logo added-into the screen. That's actually why I waited until now to watch your review... I already was so underwhelmed by these idents. (Not to mention, the existential crisis of the "oldies" channel showing 60s-90s stuff, instead of 30s-50s films like when I was growing up 😅)
