Thank you so much for the video. I born and raised in Fayette County, West Virginia. Oak Hill is my home town, and I lived in Fayetteville for many years. But I now live in California, and I haven't seen home in 17 years. The bridge wasn't even built yet when I was born. Fayette Station Road was two-ways back then. You can imagine how scary that was. By the way, Tunney Hunsaker was the Chief of Police in Fayetteville for many years, but in his youth, he was a professional boxer. Muhammad Ali's first professional match was with Tunney. Tunney was my neighbor in Fayetteville.

I've worked on a lot of bridges. Not as massive as the gorge bridge, but similar in many ways. The brown color is a "controlled rust" finish that keeps the structure viable for many years. I am sure other design engineers can explain the finishing with more detail than me. This type of finish is used on selected bridges, guardrails, etc. for aesthetic purposes in natural areas. The walkway may be a tourist attraction, but it's also used for the engineer's inspection of the structure on a regular schedule. On the old truss bridge you walked, the rivets always interest me. A design engineer advised me that rivets were superior to bolted connections in that they eliminate any voids in the connection due to their expansion on installation. Bolts leave some small voids that eventually corrode. I am also sure someone will correct me in the comments. Thanks. Nice video. I like bridges.

Bridge Day is the 3rd Saturday in October where they BASE jump with parachutes. Each year one side is alternately closed for safety inspection, a boomed truck drives with 2 cable suspended inspectors underside with a hammer blow to each bolt. Thud = fail and a bong = passed! Search You Tube for New River Bridge Day for additional videos. Amy - There are construction videos to see how. Glade Creek Grist Mill in Babcock State Park is nice.

I’ve been considering a move to WV for over 6+ months now doing a lot after researching. I was just there March 1st just a few weeks ago ( no leaves, and it still was worth it) and I took the same exact tour you’ve filmed here. You guys did a great job, and beautiful high definition, and I just wanted to say thanks. 👍 I could have saved the 750 miles of driving, just watched your video. 😄

Visited in 2010 just as they opened up the bridge walk tour. They explained one of the reasons you were strapped to an overhead cable was to eliminate jumpers. We were one of the first to take the tour. Your views from the lower bridge and next to the river were exact places we stood. My BIL was a field engineer for American Bridge and told me that as they were installing the last key piece of the arch, one of the temporary cable anchors holding the arch began to pull out from be bedrock. Had construction taken much longer there would have been a catastrophic failure. Wish I could attach our pic from the walkway.

I'm glad you finally got to visit my home state. The New River is thought to be the second oldest river behind the Nile. The walkway under the bridge is grating. You can see thru it. The road you are on was the only road that crossed the river until the bridge was built in the 70's. US Steel made a video on how they built it. I is called New Records at New River. The bridge is made of Corten Steel. It rusts and forms the brown protective layer. It's not painted. It forms a layer like the green on the Statue of Liberty. Did you get to try Tudor's Biscuit World?

Thurmond... My kind of town! Check out the Fairbanks Morse Coaling Tower. At one time thousands of coaloiing towers serviced steam locomotives throughout the country. There are a few left because they're so sturdily built. its too much trouble to tear them down.

The New River Gorge has been a popular destination for rail enthusiasts for years. Countless photographs of trains have been taken from the Hawks Nest overlook and inside the town of Thurmond , especially by the old coaling tower. In the past there was a steam locomotive powered fall colors excursion train that ran through the gorge.

A lot of people think the New is River is cool and can swim anywhere but the tide in the river sucks them under rocks and we see several drownings each year...sad
