Great Vid Danny! Is there a way to automatically change a metadata value if the note is a outlink to a certain note, I like the idea of having a page of a list for each of my metadata keys and values?

Been consuming your content alot and love every moment of it but I'm stuck in a dilema between using Notion vs Obsidian as a project management tool. I am mostly set on using Notion for active project management as it integrates with this other task manager I use called Akiflow and Obsidian as a pre or post analysis of each project Would love your thoughts on it and if your open to sharing how do you do it including active task management, OKR setting and these kinds of details

Much of my personal nuances are in my course. I use Morgen for time management and Obsidian for all the notes. At the end of the day, the tools are personal just like our workflow 😁

Hey Danny, been watching a lot of your videos lately and trying really hard to get an understanding of Obsidian. As a brand new user that just want to use it to organize my 130 pages of a single Google Doc, I’m finding Obsidian a little overwhelming. I just want to organize my notes on this one big topic of mine into simple dashboard, backlinks and easy to use interface. I know you have the student vault video but that’s a little overkill I think for a new user. Are you able to simplify a vault setup for the newer users out there? Much appreciated.

I know you asked Danny, but I recommend just going simple at first, using only a few core features of the program. As you get more comfortable, then see which other features and community plugins you can add to your workflow. The type of workflow showcased here uses many community plugins and it's a well established set-up from lots of experience using Obsidian and his vault. That can only come with time, usage, and experimentation. One example I can give for your use-case, if your 130 pages are divided by topics or some headings, you can make a note for each topic and subdivide sections with headings. Any term or idea you want to connect across notes, you link them. You can also add a tag in the metadata if you're comfortable with that (it will be easier to search and to make queries later on when you get there). It's also a good idea to have some sort of organization in your folders, but that depends on your style; some people have all the notes in the root folder and no sub-folders, and others have a very organized system (like the Johnny Decimal system), some even have a hybrid of sorts. So, again, that's why it's important to just use it, try things out, and see what works for you and what doesn't. You'll get more comfortable along the way. I also highly recommend going to Obsidian's Discord group because there are many things to learn from what other people have done and do every day (search through channels like academia, knowledge-management, even showcase-notes). You can also ask this type of question and get answers from many users with different perspectives. Also, there are maaany examples of dashboards in the showcase-notes channel, from very simple to very complex, that you can also go through, learn how to do, and also gather inspiration from. Other than that, welcome to the community and have fun! :)

I would start by treating Obsidian like a word processor with a folder system in the sidebar. I would have a file for reseach collection, source files and the an essay file.

Great stuff again Danny! Trying something similar in my database now, except I organize my sources vs projects/notes by tag, not by folder. !contains(file.inlinks.file.tag, "xyz") doesn't seem to be working. Have you experimented with something like this?

How did you get the metadata menu button to show up in dataview? Do you need dataviewjs? It is not showing up for me. I have tinkered with the settings
