Probably my favorite armoured vehicle, because while it is designed for aircraft and helicopters, this thing is terrifying for mountain and urban warfare. This thing can fire its autocannons at the top of a scyscraper and easily pierce heavy concrete used as cover, or aim high to target an enemy infantry force in the mountains. Sure, it's not a tank, and it's not meant to BE a tank, but for urban and mountain fighting it might as well be one.

That optic should be moved to the center of the turret. Replace with another AA Missile Battery or a AT Missile for Tank on Tank encounters. (It happens) The AA Cannons themselves can pulverize infantry and light armor. But it'll bounce off anything that is designed to stop tank rounds. Favorite vehicle alongside the BMP and BTR series.

I've just read a book by a retired USAF F-16 pilot. He said you can use counter measures on surface to air missiles such as jammers or chaffs/flares. He went on to say that jammers and chaffs/flares are pretty much useless against a volley of 23mm cannon shells. He said the Shilka was feared by pilots.

I suppose it's sort of a logical. The ZSU as an AA mount[ it is dual purpose] is basically for low-level targets. Basically, it is there for when the high altitude AA platforms "ground" enemy air to a low enough ceiling to where the ZSU can swat it out of the sky.

@@seen203 oh I know it's also anti-personnel and light armor, saw the vids. Hard to argue with 4x23mm cannons making their point to you with APIT shells at a combined rate of fire a bit higher than the M-163. Given it's job, adding better tracking systems and battle management systems, allowing a linked Air defense system and adding missile capability is simply a good choice. I am a bit baffled though: I admit to not have the best understanding of russian armed forces trends, but it would seem to me that the Tunguska 2S6 with it's dual-30mm autocannons and 8 AAM battery outguns the shilka by far and is already in service. is this a modernization to keep the shilka from the scrapper? becasue it seems to me that from a military standpoint, the Tunguska wins over the shilka. Glad for any informed parties to advise on this.

M-163 got the RADAR Rangefinder removed for mounting the Stinger Launcher. So only Optical Search and Track. It only existed in Israel. Called it Macbeth! That ZSU Update is way more and better. And to put the M-163 anyway next to a ZSU-23-4 is a Joke! Less Range, no RADAR Tracking and all manually controlled. The M-163 had only a Rangefinder RADAR but not search or Track. The ZSU-23-4 could swivel the RADAR 360° for Detection. When locked to a Target the Search Mode was not availeble thoug. It had a limitted Range but far better than the Eyesight of the Gunner of the M-163.

Last I saw at exhibition, the zsu-23-4 is handed to private military contractor for sale as cheaper alternative to newer AAA systems. It needed new fuel efficient engines and probably new tracks too for better mobility.

I suspect there is a combined arms doctrine involved with the use of these vehicles. Either infantry, armor, or both when employing the Shilka unless in a static defense. Even then, tank v. Shilka or IFV (equipped with TOW) or light-infantry Javelin equipped units would likely make a Kornet defense useless.

They can be used for direct fire yes, but its guns are inteded for Helo's and rockets for strike fighters. Its more then effective at air support. Terminator II is better for ground support cause it carries Kornet ATGM's instead of surface to air missiles. along side dual 30mm's (a 40mm grenade launcher I think) and few DHK's and a hull based on the T-72.

Правильнее так не делать нового пока старое не починили все так гораздо проще и быстрее пример этой шилки все потроха меняются на новое и боемые свойства машины не только в востанавливаются а и повышаются. Пример т 64 бв и т 80 бв поставили новую дз а по характеристикам бронирование получается несопоставимо лутше чем без новой дз. Новые радиостанции навигацыя тепловизоры и вот по характеристикам совсем другие возможности. Корпуса старые внутренности новы и получается совсем другая песня.

hitman uncharted this solution is better. First... theese 4 guns have conected rate of fire of 4000 RPM. Second it provides better spread of projectiles in short bursts ( like a 12 guage shotgun) to hit aircrafts. Gatling guns need time to speed up rotary barrel and spread of projectiles would be much worse in gatling gun. Also no one need to shoot something what shots 8000 RPM

hitman uncharted these gumę arę good enough to to the job... one barrel has theoretical rate of fire 1000 RPM and it has 4 of these. 4000 RPM is very good. And these guns are liquid cooled. These things can shot better than gatling gun.
