It was exciting to me :) Bigger breakpad-disc clearance is a welcomed feature for me, also checked the 11-34 and 11-36 cassettes out, good ratios there with a compact front 2by drive of 34-50, oh and yes - it is _relatively_ okayish price still
@ctomps9 Жыл бұрын
The 11-34 and 11-36 12 speed cassettes are basically identical to their 10 speed counterparts but for the 12 and 14 cogs which makes it a very marginal gain for the majority of riders who dont race. GRX 400 and Tiagra 4700 10 speed are even more appealing since you get a better chainline most of the time. I do welcome the additional pad clearance though. Maybe I'll just upgrade my calipers.

105 12-speed is now Shimano's flagship mechanical groupset. That is actually great for a lot of people, and has also helped to simplify their road offering, while using the same 12-speed platform as the higher-end lines. This is for people who want leading-edge performance and don't want batteries on their bike. That's me. That's most of the people I ride with. If I wanted to shed weight, I could upgrade cranks, chain, cassette...it's all cross-compatible with Ultegra and Dura-Ace. I think this is the last video I can stand to watch with this guy. Too often his takes aren't based in reality. He just invents a situation to align with his cynical attitude.

This video just showed up on my feed (thanks algorithm!). I collected a new bike (my second "adult" bike) with the new 105 12-speed. It replaces / adds to my gravel bike with a 9-speed Sora groupset. I have been blown away with the difference. Of course it SHOULD be better, but I feel so much more faith in it than the Sora. Fast, smooth changes, no hint of the chain being chucked off the rings (which seemed to happen more than it should on the Sora, even though it was regularly serviced). I didn't want electronic gears... I wanted my bike to be free from a need to charge it up... happy with the purchase.

You guys nailed the “who is this group set for” question in my opinion. There has been a noticeable gap between Tiagra and 105 for some time. Does this mean then that Tiagra will get turned up to 11?!

Hi Cade Team, my new Focus is coming with 105 mechanical, it was all I could afford and I have no regrets. I don't race, I've never owned electronic, I'm just happy I could afford entry level carbon frame with disc brakes, and it's an endurance. I'm happy, and i'll probably switch out things like the handlebars, new wheels for climbing, and maybe some other weight saving upgrades. Chelsea c:

The 8 speed claris is great tbh. Replacing the cassette is like 20€ at decathlon and riding the bike is very cheap overall. Makes it a fantastic experience. I wait for the new grx because 11-51 will be perfect for bikepacking

For myself, 12 speed a good thing as I want big range and climbing gearing from the 11-36 cassette. I can already get 11-32 and 11-34 from 11 speed. Only 105 officially supports 11-36 , So I make a choice. Either am locked into mechanical = 105 levers/RD/FD or... I am locked into Di2 = 105 RD but can choose Ultegra or Dura ace for the levers and FD. Either option allows any crankset model. I have looked at the 105 di2 levers and the buttons are unacceptably cheap, wobbly and feel terrible. So the choice becomes clearer: Either Full 105 mechanical or, ultegra Di2 with a 105 RD. That is a big price gap between those two options!!

I predict very few people will actually buy 105 mechanical. 105 mechanical is priced at $1200 MSRP here in the US, 105 Di2 is about $1900 MSRP. Both likely sell for less and the differential on complete bikes won't be much. Rival AXS groups can be found for less than $1500, Apex AXS is even cheaper. 105 mechanical is just too expensive to matter. I'll bet the perceived benefits of the electronic groups (easier internal routing, less post-install maintenance, push-button shifting etc) make spending the few hundred extra easily worth it for most buyers. If not, I predict the top of the range CUES will be a great option for cyclists looking for a less expensive mechanical group. Preemptively: I don't want to argue about the perceived benefits of electronic, please don't respond saying electronic is pointless.

When did 105 move from an entry level groupset to a mid-range groupset, and Ultegra move from a mid-range, to a Pro level groupset? I don't live near any mountains. I don't need a 34,32,30, or a 28. This is why I still ride with 7800 and a 12-25. If I was still racing, I probably have to get disc brakes, and a new bike.....Damnit.

Ultegra has always been the groupset that people who want to race, would purchase. Dura ace is for the pros.. Ultegra for the amateurs who want something similar to race on without the crazy (ish) price tag
