Today, I want to share that, just like the Hanuman Chalisa, we have the Sri Ramasthavam in Sarga 117 of the Yuddha Kanda in the Valmiki Ramayanam. The context goes like this: at the end of the battle between Rama and Ravana, when Ravana is killed, everyone erupts with joy - the Vanara army, the Devas, and all present. When the Devas descend to Earth and begin bowing to Sri Rama, he is still unaware that he is the incarnation of Sri MahaVishnu. Throughout his life, he has believed himself to be a common man, living as such. In the entire Ramayanam, this sarga - Sarga 117 in the Yuddha Kanda - is where Sri Rama is reminded that he is, in fact, the Avatar of Sri MahaVishnu. To remind him of this, Brahma sings the Sri Ramasthavam in praise of Sri Rama. This hymn is called the Sri Ramasthavam, and, as I mentioned, it is hidden in Sarga 117 of the Yuddha Kanda in the Ramayanam. Unfortunately, it is not as well-known as the Hanuman Chalisa. The word 'Sthavam' means a hymn sung in praise of a divinity. Like the Hanuman Chalisa, the Sri Ramasthavam consists of about 18 shlokas running through Sarga 117, making it the oldest known prayer dedicated to Bhagavan Sri Rama, and remarkably, the very first one. It is found in the Valmiki Ramayanam, and this is the only place in the entire Sri Ramayanam where Sri Rama is directly praised and identified as Sri MahaVishnu. Interestingly, towards the end of this Sarga, as part of the Sri Ramasthavam, Brahma addresses Sri Rama as Sri Krishna as well. Just like how some other hymns promise blessings, it is written here that whoever recites this sthavam will live in peace and prosperity. That is the essence of the Sri Ramasthavam.
