Laos, a landlock country, has no interest in South China Sea, but it supports for China in ASEAN region is invaluable to the Chinese government. Sadly, these projects don't help many Laotians, like the Laos construction worker mentioned, he hasn't been pay for a year and Laotians women got harassed by Chinese men without much help from local police.... They will get upset when people speak about Chinese influence in the Global South and call it "neocolonialism". The sheer irony. Just accept it, China is the leader of the Global South and they're contributing more without the need to colonise and rule an entire nation for their own benefit. People often speak about Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar or maybe Malaysia when it comes to China's influence in modern Asia but there is no country in Asia that has been so greatly influenced by China in the modern era than Laos. Laos is representative of modern Chinese influence in Asia. Boten is one place where the Laotian kip and Chinese yuan are both accepted but even more interesting is the Golden Triangle Special Economic Zone (GTSEZ), while not tied specifically to the Chinese government, it's being run by a Chinese kingpin. Chinese cultural influence is widespread in the zone as Chinese people, including traders and investors have contributed to the development of the zone. The GTSEZ is inhabited by Laotians, Chinese, Thais, Burmese, Indians and Vietnamese who are engaged in business in the area. Like it or not, China is the dominant power in Asia today.
