Of all the ancient creatures we find in the fossil record, this one fascinates me the most. As far as we can say, once they died off they became truly extinct. We have no animal that evolved from them. We only have convergent evolution to show us what they once were like in part.

@rexyjp1237 what exactly classifies archiossorids as reptiles again?
@Tanks_In_SpaceАй бұрын
@@shakes6381 3 seconds on chatgpt: Archosaurids (a group that includes modern crocodilians, birds, and their extinct relatives such as non-avian dinosaurs and pterosaurs) are classified as reptiles based on their evolutionary lineage and shared characteristics with other members of the reptile clade. Here's why: 1. Phylogenetic Classification Archosaurids belong to the clade Reptilia, which is a monophyletic group comprising all descendants of the most recent common ancestor of modern reptiles (including lizards, snakes, turtles, crocodilians, and birds). Despite their diversity, all archosaurs share this common evolutionary ancestry with traditional reptiles. 2. Amniote Ancestry Archosaurids are amniotes-tetrapods that lay eggs with an amniotic membrane or have an analogous reproductive system. Within amniotes, they are part of the diapsid lineage, characterized by having two temporal fenestrae (holes) in their skulls. Diapsids encompass all modern reptiles and their extinct relatives, including archosaurids. 3. Shared Reptilian Features Archosaurids exhibit key traits traditionally associated with reptiles: Keratinized Scales or Skin: Modern crocodilians have tough, keratinized skin similar to other reptiles. Ectothermy (in Non-Avian Archosaurids): While birds (derived archosaurs) are endothermic, crocodilians and many extinct archosaurids are ectothermic, a common trait in reptiles. Egg-Laying: Most archosaurids (except some birds) lay eggs, consistent with reptilian reproduction. 4. Skeletal Characteristics Archosaurids display skeletal features linked to reptiles, such as: Diapsid Skull Structure: As diapsids, they have two temporal fenestrae in their skulls. Specific Limb Postures and Bone Configurations: Shared skeletal traits link them to other diapsids and differentiate them from other amniotes. 5. Evolutionary Perspective Reptilia as a clade includes all living reptiles and their extinct relatives, encompassing archosaurs due to their descent from the early reptiles. This broader definition, based on common ancestry, places archosaurs within the reptile umbrella, even though birds (a subgroup of archosaurs) have evolved significant differences. In summary, archosaurids are classified as reptiles because of their evolutionary descent from reptilian ancestors and their shared anatomical and physiological characteristics with other reptiles. While birds have developed unique traits, their roots firmly tie them to this lineage.

Will someone please explain to me how you find one single fossilized neck bone and come what with the determination that is a completely new different species ? Because that is probably the dumbest thing I have ever heard it is just ridiculous
@williamleidy6713Ай бұрын
I would say that they probably did a comparative analysis to the same neck bone of other described animals . This would give them ballpark on size and body morph.
@tec-jones5445Ай бұрын
You compare the neck bone to those of other known taxa. It's preserved enough to have features that diagnose it as an azhdarchid, but it is unique enough that it's probably its own taxa. More material would be preferred for greater certainty, but this find is quite enough to determine it as a new azhdarchid. Since there's no other azhdarchid of that size known for that time period-layer and region, it can safely be determined as its own thing for now. If we find evidence on the contrary, it will be dubbed dubious and lumped into something else.
@harislittle9241Ай бұрын
No other azhdarchids in japan, or nearby, you can determine the age of the animal based of bone structure, thus know if the animal was fully grown, therefore if its much smaller or larger than other adult azhdarchids its probably its own thing. Also its proportions could be different. Azhdarchid necks are generally pretty distinctive so we know its that
@Rob.DB.Ай бұрын
That crap bugs me too! I guess if everyone does it with such little evidence then nobody gets mad at anyone else doing it. "Oh look a 1" neck bone, ...'NEW SPECIES!' 'I CALLED IT !" ..."YEAH!
