New Spektrum Smart G2 S1400 Charger and LiPo Batteries - NO MORE BALANCE LEAD!!!

This is an in-depth look at the new Spektrum Smart G2 S1400 battery charger and G2 LiPo batteries. These are a new product that will be available soon and were sent to me to try out and show the new features.
There are three takeaways for me right away: no more battery leads on the batteries, automatic charging when plugged in, and more power for the charger. They still have my favorite feature and come set to automatically discharge to storage mode of 3.90V after 72 hours and the G2 batteries can discharge 3x faster. The S1400 charger can at up to 20 amps. When turned on, the charger will start charging automatically after you plug in your smart battery-G1 or G2. The charger can still be operated manually.
Why isn't there a balance plug? Isn't that unsafe? G2 batteries have their own internal balancing chip that is 3 times as powerful as G1 so there is no need to externally balance. This chip works in tandem with a Smart G2 Charger to produce fast and accurate automatic charging, simply plug in and it takes care of the rest for you. This chip will bring your batteries to storage mode 3x faster than the G1.
The Spektrum Smart G1 chargers do have an firmware update that makes them compatible with the new G2 batteries that don't have balance leads and the G2 chargers do have a balance lead port so that you can charge G1 batteries and other batteries you may have.

I ditched my glasses and wore my best Losi T-shirt and Camo CCxRC hat for this one. I didn't realize it until i saw the Spektrum video on this, but if you go down past the "Start" on the menu, there are Smart battery settings like the ones seen on the XBC100 LiPo Checker I showed. So you can set the auto-discharge time and also the level you want it to discharge to. Very cool to see.

For the price they charge for these smart batteries you'd think they'd do better cable management 🤔 that little gray wire with the balance connection looks terrible, it should be connected to one of the wires like it has been on the smart ESCs

That isn't a balance lead. It is the communication line.

Great info Tony. When we picket up Chris's TWO LMT'S, I also got a Smart Technology Powerstage bundle. Smart S2100 charger and two 3s 5000mAh 50c battery's. They have the balance cable. After his first runs, I charged both battery's. It turned super cold and snow. The next run was about four days later. The battery's where no longer fully charged as I expected them to be.I was about to storage charge them but Chris ran them. Do you know if the SPMX50003s0H5 also self discharge? The more videos you do, the more I learn about the LMT's. (also the more it costs me)

They should self discharge, but you may need to set them up to do it. I use my Spektrum XBC100 Battery Checker to program the time on mine. bit.ly/XBC100-Lipo-check

The price cripples this charger. Never in a million years would I pay that much to charge a battery. Let's not talk about the price for a battery 60 bux for 5000 mAh??? Their nuts!!! Ovonic 50c 6200 mAh 32.99 and you get 2!!!!

I get what you are saying about batteries. The iconic you get 2 of are 2S. The $60 Spektrum is 3s. Still, the 2S Spektrum is more at $45 for one. But if I buy for quantity that means I have more batteries to discharge. My primary reason fir switching is the auto discharge feature built into the batteries.

Auto discharge? That's very cool. 😀I find it a pain to discharge all my batteries after doing speed runs. So if they go down by themselves thats a big plus. Great review Tony...Spektrum is coming out with some fantastic products. 👍

This is very cool man. Certainly a big difference in not having the Balance leads. But I am not a fan of proprietary chargers. That's why I dropped the Traxxas one, when they came out with it. I had to have the special charger for it. I am happy to see though, that if you do have the charger, it will charge batteries with balance plugs as well. Nice add on. Well done on them for that. Theyre awesome Batteries and Charger for sure. The whole SMART setup is definitely a great idea and is super convenient. The Smart wire must use a some comm protocol to get data feedback and cell monitoring with some sort of internal battery module.. But the batteries are even more expensive than Traxxas Batteries by a lot actually and the features are nice with the smart charger but definitely not needed and expensive. The auto discharge is nice and will definitely help people who aren't familiar or just dont storage charge all their lipos after each use..

Seeing that charger show instant on the fly internal resistance per cell and ramp up to 20A charge fast and nearly silent was impressive. I like what that G2 charger can do! Seems well designed to keep cool and quiet.

For me, this technology does not compensate for giving a more or less pulsation on the charger, taking into account the price of chargers and batteries. In Europe the price is even much higher. You can buy an ISDT charger, which are the same as the Spektrum, at a lower cost.

Yeah awesome Tony, I’m kind of bummed because I just bought there charger from Horizon S2100 and two batteries told them I wanted at least 100 C they sent me 50 C, and this charger will not charge to batteries at the same time after a few seconds it starts beeping off and shuts off, I ordered it when I ordered my LMT gravedigger, makes me mad they told her yes it was a girl sales lady I should’ve known better that I wanted the best so instead of selling me the G 2 They sell me the old stuff off the shelf,

That sounds odd. The S2100 should charge 2 batteries at one time. Does it have two inputs, but it just turns off when you try to do 2 at 1 time? I have two of the S2100 and they are my "go to charger" for 80% of my batteries.

I have the 2100 charger & it's great but Spektrum is going to have to produce some higher mah batteries before I even consider another upgrade. The 4S 5000mah batteries are cool but we need more than that. How about some 7500mah or higher packs. Runtime is very important to me...

Let them know. It’s in their interest to put things on the market that people will buy. I don’t run packs larger than 5000-6000mah because I notice temps go up on extended runs. I’d rather have a second set ready to go. While changing batteries, the electronics get a little break.

Good system etc BUT you pay a price. I think the cells are overpriced for performance compared to other brands. Get the price down and more would go with this system.Safety is a concern BUT how many regular RCers will need that,they know what they are doing. This will suit beginners more and they will not pay this price ,just my opinion.
