In 2023, after almost ten years of living in my dreaded split-level entryway home, I finally made my dream come to fruition to make a USEABLE entry for my family. I added a 6'x11' bump-out to expand the size of the foyer area and make it functional. I was able to add custom storage, seating, and necessary SPACE for everyone to use. This video include before and after photos, as well as progress photos throughout the remodeling process. This was a great way to make my split entry house functional--and beautiful!

Hey guys! I'm so glad everyone is excited about this renovation because I too was thinking, why isn't this more common?! All split-levels have this same issue. Cost is difficult to say as when I got quotes, there was such a wide range (one quote was $130K which was more than I even paid for my house LOL). And I live in a cheaper cost of living area in the US so it was relatively affordable all things considered. It cost the same as my sunroom, but even my sunroom, the contractors later said it would cost twice as much now as I had my sunroom started right when COVID hit and costs have upped dramatically. Also, the quotes were different because, for example, one company insisted that it had to have it's own space heater/AC and wanted to tack on an extra $4k to install one. But it's not like you're sitting and chilling in this area, I would never turn on a heater or AC in this space, so I went with a company that did not force that as it wasn't required for code. I also had added charges because my stairs were not done to code and we had to customize the treads for the stairs, so that sucked. There were some delays due to some miscommunication with some of the smaller contractors, but if work was done daily, it would have taken 6 weeks, maybe a month tops. We lived in the house, we just came through the garage door and then had to walk through the area but it wasn't that bad really. I picked out all materials for it and designed the space myself, and used that to get my quotes when contacting reno companies. If you want to see the sunroom I added onto the back, I have that video posted too! It's one of our favorite spaces! I wanted to post this because I had so much trouble finding similar remodels to reference when I got quotes. So you are very welcome! I'd love to see if anyone else has this done so others can find some photos to reference when attempting the same project!

No problem! I had been through so many websites trying to find something similar, so I understand the frustration of finding something to emulate and show to a potential contractor. I designed it all myself and the contractor just went with the flow! :) A few months with it now and seriously--LIFECHANGING! No more tripping over kids on the stairs putting shoes on! LOL

This is so great! I am wanting to do something like this too. How long did it take? Were you able to live in the house during the renovation? Thanks!

Incredible!! I have lived in split level homes my entire life, and can't believe this type of renovation isn't more common! Can you share the estimated costs (a breakdown for the excavation, etc. would be amazing) and the part of the country this is at? Any other suggestions or tips for people who want to copy your idea?

Quotes were everywhere from $30k to $130k LOL It was insane the difference between company quotes and I got seven quotes before selecting a contractor. I live in a low cost of living area too, so quoting what it would cost elsewhere would be difficult. I also purchased the door, flooring, etc. separately so my quotes did not include those.

The renovation is very beautiful and the additional entry way space is nice. I live in a similar split level but wonder if investing in expansion of the livable spaces might add more value and function. Thanks for sharing.😊

I LOVE IT! ❤ We too have been living with ours for 10 years! Ours is identical except for we don’t need to excavate or add stairs because our entry is at ground level. We’re talking with a contractor now about bumping ours out. If you don’t mind me asking, what was the ballpark cost? Any do’s and dont’s would be greatly appreciated too! Thank you for sharing!
