New Spoilboard - Best Improvement yet?

Totally love it. I never considered putting threaded inserts to the table like that for permanency. And the jig is a fantastic idea!!! I’m definitely doing it!!

I realize this video was over a year ago, but I find it funny that you want to make a template to hand drill holes when you have a CNC right there that can drill the holes for you.

Thanks for your input and ideas. I have a shopbot with an aluminum table. Just adding slot bolts as being very adaptable rather than just fixtures with bolt inserts. I was thinking six inch spacing would work. Glad that that is what you used. Your video is still alive after two year.

Great video Harv, Just kinda doing the same thing with boards between the slot tracks. I like the idea of using the inserts for mounting to the existing machine top, this will make it a no brainer for replacing the boards the next time. Thanks for the great idea. Cheers. Andrew

Great video. I did the same type of spoil board on my home made CNC. I guess I am cheap not buying the tee tracks. I made my table top 1 1/2 in thick originally to have good strength and hold the flatness, so decided to make the lower part of the tee a cut out grove in my table top and also inserted screw inserts into my table top, like you did. Then I cut 6 in. 3/4 thick boards 4 feet long (my CNC has a 4 ft by 4 ft cutting area) and spaced them 3/8 in apart (5/16 plus 1/16 gap to make it easy to move a 5/16 tee bolt in the track) which became the stem of the tee slot. I then use 5/16 Tee bolts or bolts for my hold downs clamps. I then have my CNC drill and counter sink the 4 hold down hole ( I use 4 instead of 3 like you used). When when I needing new boards I use my CNC to drill and counter sink for hold down screws holes, so no need for a jig. I guess great minds think a like.

Hi. Harv. I'm going to make a project similar as you. I don't have my CNC yet, but I started ordering parts. While waiting for my stuff to arrive I might as well surf of any CNC ideas. And it's your method that I like to follow. I would like to ask what spec and where did you buy the blue t-track and the hardwares?

Harv, I kid you not, just about 1 hour before I watched your video I sat here and drew up plans for a waste board for my Shapeoko XXL I just got last week. I believe sir that I may scrap those plans and really consider your idea. I only have a cut area of about 33" x 33" I may only put about 4 tracks in. This really looks like a great idea and simple. how is it working out for you so far? Maybe a board running L to R in the back to fill up that back space and if it's squared up you may not need the front piece on the jig, just a thought from a newbie. Again, great video and concept and I just subscribe to your channel. Thanks again.

i have been into cnc for 10 years now but have a new table coming and want to have all of my hardware on hand. how long were your bolts that screwed into the inserts? my last cnc the sacrifice table was glued to the table!!

Only if you had another CNC that could make holes.... you would not need to make templates

Nice build. I don't have a table saw. Do you think the MDF strips can be cut with a circular saw + track (Accu-cut) with good enough accuracy?

I don’t have any experience with using track saws. I do think you would be able to make the cuts though using a straight edge and circular saw. Even if the pieces aren’t all exactly the same, I don’t think there will be an issue. Start with a t-track in the center and place a board to either side until you get to the final pieces and just cut to fit!
