Consider, for example, the difference between Obi-Wan Kenobi's blue, single-bladed lightsaber as seen in A New Hope (which conveys that he is a gentleman knight from a more elegant time) and Darth Maul's red double-bladed lightsaber from The Phantom Menace (which is the weapon of a ferocious and incredibly agile animal who will stop at nothing to draw blood). Neither of these weapons is practical in any real sense of the word, because a laser sword that can effortlessly cut through anything can never be practical: you'd dismember yourself the first time you accidentally tapped yourself with it. But when Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul fight at the end of The Phantom Menace, it is the fact that they are fighting with these swords in particular that tells us everything we need to know about what is actually at stake: the end of a more civilized and enlightened time, and the beginning of an age of bloodshed, cruelty, and strife. So when judging the new lightsaber in The Force Awakens trailer, the first thing we should be judging it by is what it tells us about its owner. Which is a lot.

In the Star Wars movies there are only ever two Sith Lords: a master and an apprentice. So when Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader die at the end of Return of the Jedi, that's it. The Sith are extinct. Yet here's maybe Adam Driver, wielding a Sith lightsaber, around 30 years after the end of the Sith Order. Where did he get it?
@ther3aper561
@ther3aper561 9 жыл бұрын
Did he find it? It's possible, but every clue in the trailer suggests that he made it. Notice how the lightsaber sputters, crackles, and flickers as the character turns it on. As io9 notes, that's a sign of shoddy workmanship. But don't just look at it, listen to it. The sound of a lightsaber turning on is always smooth around the edges, but this lightsaber sounds dirty, and full of static. These are all design choices, consciously made to tell us, the viewers, something about what we're seeing.
@ther3aper561
@ther3aper561 9 жыл бұрын
Listen to the trailer's narration. "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side." Combined with everything else, that says everything you need to know: The Force Awakens is about the rebirth of the Sith after their destruction. The character in the trailer is formative to that. And without a master to guide him, he's rebuilding the Sith order from scratch, which includes figuring out how to create a lightsaber for himself, warts and all. So if the anonymous villain created this lightsaber himself, why did he design it with a crossguard at all? Simple: he knows he's vulnerable to getting his hands cut off, because he's not skilled. He has no training. If a regular lightsaber is a katana, this is a claymore: a brutal and unsophisticated weapon favored by a vicious, untrained fighter who is relying upon brute strength to chop his opponents to pieces.
@ther3aper561
@ther3aper561 9 жыл бұрын
The crossguard says so much about the character wielding it. After all of the silly lightsaber ballet of the prequels, it opens up a whole new dynamic, and immediately differentiates the character in the trailer from every Star Wars baddie who has come before him. This isn't the lightsaber of a trained warrior in his prime, like in the prequels, or a retired Jedi who hasn't fought in 30 years, like in Episodes IV through VI. This is the lightsaber of a bloodthirsty young berserker.
@ther3aper561
@ther3aper561 9 жыл бұрын
Which is why, from a cinematic perspective, the lightsaber crossguard we're seeing in The Force Awakens trailer is such incredible design. It's not just visually arresting. It's efficient. We know what we're seeing immediately, no explanation needed. And not only that, it illuminates a character's personality, and fighting style with just the flip of a switch. It helps tell a story. And when it comes to the language of cinema, that's the only design problem worth solving.

STORMTROOPERS ARE NOT CLONES!!! After the events of Order 66, the Kamanoains (long-necked Cloners from AOTC) created a rebel clone army to fight the Empire. The 501st unit was sent to defeat them and destroy the remaining Jango Fett DNA so they could never clone again. The empire disbanded clones and relied on recruitment after that. This is why there is a significant difference in skill between the Clones and Stormtroopers! (Explained in the Star Wars Battlefront 2 campaign)

Actually, the Storm Troopers are not clones. Remember when they said that clones age quickly? So at this point, the clones are basically either too old to fight, or they died of old age. The Storm troopers, if you watch Star Wars Rebels, are volunteers who enlist into the army. (Like the system today)

I feel like a lot of people don't actually realize the use for the "Cross guard" on Kylo Ren's lightsaber, the story behind it is that Kylo Ren is a self taught Sith, technically not even belonging to the Order of the Sith. And being self taught, he didn't have an instructor in building his lightsaber. So the "Cross Guards" aren't even cross guards at all, as a matter of fact they are vents coming out of the lightsaber. And in the argument of the black stormtrooper, theoretically there could have been thousands of them in the ranks of the Empire but we'll never know because they have their helmets on. But my basis on this is that Clone Troopers and Storm Troopers are two entirely different armies, Clones have a very short life span (As they were bred for war there was no use for them to have long lives) and there is no way they could have survived all the way from Revenge of the Sith to The New Hope, so the Empire set up training/recruiting camps all across the galaxy and these are were the Storm Troopers were trained. This is supported by the Disney show Star Wars Rebels where in one of the episodes the main antagonist is under cover in one of these training camps. All though I'm not sure if the show is 100% cannon but it gives at least a little bit of evidence to support my case.

You guys are insane. The terminator trailer was fucking terrible. old arnold is good? what the hell are you talking about? old arnold delivering the same "ill be back" line? abosolutely terrible it looks incredibly low budget. even the scars on john conner's face look homemade, overdone, and cheesy. they are stealing entire scenes from the other movies. talk about lazy. and YES salvation was good. a solid 6.5 out of 10 movie.
@PaddyCollector
@PaddyCollector 9 жыл бұрын
1. I understand how it makes sense to the story but arnold is almost 70 years old. He hasn't been in a decent movie for nearly 20 years. He needs to just go away. Just look at his imdb page and see when the last decent he made was. I mean the 6th day was in 2000 for crying out loud. 2. saying cheesy lines makes a movie cheesy. who wants a cheesy terminator movie? it might as well be made by the same people who do those scary movie movies and meet the spartans. 3. post production will not change makeup on a guy's face.

one more thing though. its not possible for the past to change the way it did in this. the changes after you send someone back have to be initiated by them and not before they get there. or he would have known about it before he went back. because when you change the past it instantly changes the future. take that days of future past. that movie the second wolverine wasn't affecting anything else. is the moment the future should have changed

PaddyCollector Your point? He was out of the movie buisness for a long time. And Terminator 3 was a good movie. If you dont like that its either not your thing(which is ok) or you are a hater. And Last Stand was ok, Expendables 2 entertaining. Lives he of his fame and our nostalic memories in these movies? Sure. But he earned that. Never got the Arnie hate after 2000. Yes, he isnt the Arnie of your youth. Get over it and enjoy good rides. I wasnt hyped(for an Terminator movie with Arnie in it) for the new one. But the trailer got me excited. Is he old. Yes. But Clint Eastwood and many others were and are cool with that "old guy" charisma. Arnie is too.

A lot of people get this wrong, 90% of the stormtroopers are now just regular humans who are recruited because the emperor saw a big flaw with clones, easily corruptible by the enemy, perfect example is the unofficial komino rebellion where some of them cloned anti-empire clones but were easily crushed, some are still stormtroopers but a lot have died between 3 and 4 and even more so in episode 4 when the death star blew up

If we are talking Disney Marvel right now . . . Ant Man will start the trend, Cap 3 will fall flat a bit and leave people feeling weary of the genre ( kind of like the hate for Iron Man 3). The movies will start feeling to much either like they aren't connected as well (Iron Man 3 to Avengers 2) or like they are sequelbait (Iron Man 2 to Avengers 1).
@The7wc

DaylightDigital As much as it pains me to say it, I don't think Ant-Man is gonna be very good. Skepticism started as soon as Edgar Wright left the project. The director, Peyton Reed, has done nothing but comedies, and they aren't nearly as good as Wright's. Rudd and Douglass are good, but they can't do much with bad writing and direction. Ant-Man was never going to be amazing, especially not this late in the game, but I'm thinking it's not gonna be very good. Same with Dr. Strange; Cumberbatch is a capable actor, but the director is known for horror, and the THREE credited writers have unimpressive resumes. Civil War, Black Panther, etc, all look safe for now though.

Disney owns Marvel, right? I've noticed that, except for the Terminator talk, this was all about Disney properties. Like, when talking about comic book movies, it's all Marvel. But when you look at it, what has DC done? There was the Dark Knight trilogy. Aaaand... that's it. The big talk is Star Wars and Marvel. Disney is now like the Google of Hollywood: competition exists, but we just don't care. I'm not thrilled at all about a Justice League film because DC hasn't given us anything to boost our excitement.

Best actor to join a superhero franchise - heath ledger. The movie is known more for the joker. He made the movie so much better than it is. He was the first actor to be nominated and win an oscar for a comic book role. IMDB - batman begins - 8.3 the dark knight - 9.0 the dark knight rises - 8.5 iron man - 7.3 the wolverine - 6.7 rotten tomatoes - batman begins - 7.7 the dark knight - 8.6 the dark knight rises - 8.0 iron man - 7.7 the wolverine - 6.3 This proves that no one was expecting anything from batman begins which they didn't need to but when the dark knight came out and heath ledger improved the status of the dark knight trilogy. Heath ledger improved it so much that when everyone went to see the dark knight rises they were expecting a good movie but it was slightly like batman begins. So this improves that Heath ledger improved the dark knight franchise.

Hoping anybody will read this. Here is what I thing of the Star Wars VII The Force Awakens Trailer. It begins with what I don't thing is a clone, it is just reusing the incredible technique Luke and Solo used, so no problem with that. Then we see a new droid we had never seen. COOL, maybe the new R2D2 (trying to take his place)? The we see clones (real ones) getting ready for BATTLE, they are part of the empire, thet meaning they are being controled by a Sith maybe. Then we get to the lightsaber part, it is cool, we see a dark character in a dark place, walking darkly with dark music and a dark voice saying "THE DARK SIDE", IT IS EVIL! W e may love (hate) this character as much as we did Darth Vader. He has a cool weapon that we can analyse as TheR3aper5 said, it teaches us of what may or is going to happen. To end with a shot of THE MILENIUM FALCON with our favourite soundtrack playing. You get goose bumps (literally) and we can especulate on who is riding it and if we are going to see Solo take the Falcon one more, maybe last, time. The very best of the trailer is just this: It maid me very excited to see it VERY! I havce seen the original saga and love them but have never got goose bumps or even get surprised (because I saw it like 13 years in my life so I knew Darth Vader was Lukes father and all) and I think this one is going to be the STAR WARS of my generation that wil get me excited, goose bumped, surprised, amazed, nerdy and in love. GREAT TRAILER, HOPE IT TO BE A GREAT MOVIE!

It's been long-established that after the Empire took over, Stormtroopers were cloned from a variety of templates, and then they started recruitment of non-clones. As the clone in BF2 says, "We never really got used to the new guys." In fact, seeing a Jango clone however many years this is after the original films would be LESS appropriate.

I can't believe nobody said anything about the part where the storm troopers are getting ready to get out of the ship. That's the only thing I wasn't expecting in the trailer and it gave it such tension... It's just like 2 seconds and it's my favourite part. So Kitty Pride not looking different between X3 and DoFP isn't really a problem. Patrick Stewart practically hasn't changed since he played Piccard on ST:TNG. That's like 25 years. my choices for some of the best movie deaths of all time: Brooks in The Shawshank Redemption. The sense of hopelessness in the scene(his trouble adjusting to a new time, society's disregard for him as a ex-con, etc.)and Brook's acceptance of his fate as dead weight of the world is emotionally devastating. Chris Chambers in Stand by Me. Chris's character is built-up so beautifully that we can't do anything but love him for his fierce outlook on the world. And while he technically didn't die on screen, the image of him walking and fading away might as well have been the death of him. Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator 2. Nuff said. Earl Partridge in Magnolia. He's a weak old man on the brink of death, forced to acknowledge his past sins and attempting to reconcile with the son he abandoned. The sheer horror of his actions conflict with his dying image; he passes away in the midst of chaos, with frogs raining outside and his son viciously attacking him with the irreversible truth of his greatest failures, as well as refusing to accept his father's last grab at redemption.

By the time I was both all 3 original Star Wars movies (episodes 4, 5 and 6) had already come out and even though I've obviously heard about them, I didn't even bother to watch them until after my friends and I sat down one night and watched Spaceballs just because my friend said it was hilarious. About 3-4 years after watching Spaceballs, I sat down with my cousin, the biggest Star Wars fan I know (so much so that years after, named his first son Luke and wanted to name his 2nd child, his first daughter, Leah but his wife would only let him name one of their children after Star Wars characters lol) and watched episodes 4, 5 and 6 right before episode 1 was about to hit theatres. But yeah, for about 3-4 years the only knowledge I had on Star Wars was from what I had learned from watching Spaceballs! lol

It makes perfect sense really, the only thing we have seen that can stand against the blade of a lightsaber is the blade of another lightsaber. The purpose of a cross guard is to protect the wrist. What is the most common lightsaber injury? hand removal. So it make sense to have such a cross guard.

My only issue about the Fantastic Four being bought by Marvel is that Chris Evans played both Human Torch and Captain America. This would mean that if Fantastic Four was bought back either Human Torch or Captain America would have to either be be played by somebody else or one of them would have to die/leave which would in turn through off so much storyline. I'm just not really sure how it would work.

I just can't see X-Men and other Marvel Characters sharing the same universe so I'm kind of glad that different studios have the rights to them. It doesn't make sense that New York City would celebrate Spiderman as a hero and the rest of America celebrate all these superheroes ... yet for some reason people like Wolverine, Mystique and Magneto are considered mutants and hated, to me it just doesn't work.

It's weird what some people think about. It didn't even occur to me that a black storm trooper would be a weird thing until you mentioned it. And thinking about it now it really makes no sense to be stumped by that. Why wouldn't there be a black storm trooper? Episode 4 is supposed to be at least about 20-30 years after the clone wars. That's a lot of time for a soldier to get too old for combat or die in it or whatever. So obviously unless they ordered new ones about every 10 years or so not all storm troopers are clones.

IMO, if you want to expand on lightsabers by giving them new designs, just going for different forms of swords is a dead end. What variation swords have is lost in the fact that the blade is just a straight laser. Why not use the whole laser blade aspect on different sorts of weapons? Like wrist mounted claws, halberds maybe, or hell, even a scythe. There are ways you can go with this, maybe not what I pointed out, but they do exist.

TERMINATOR 2 WAS THE BEST BECAUSE: it gave us all what we loved from the first movie and added immense depth to the Lore that left us wanting to know more about the terminator universe. At the time of the movie technology, seeing the liquid metal terminator was mind-blowing! I think what the terminator universe needed dearly was to stray away from the time altering . T-3 ruined the concept and just bored us to death. T-Salvation had so much hype because people thought we had finally got passed time alterations and would add more to it. i had imagined intense battles and developed characters... Now imagine if they shown a movie from a skynet point of view. it growing into an AI that had personality and how it decided to go back for john .

The guests they have come on the show always make interesting and valid points, so they really dropped the ball when they got Alison Haislip to contribute. @ 34:58 Alison, what the fuck are you talking about. Have you SEEN the original Bond movies? They are nothing like the Brosnan ones. The original ones (take the first 5 for example), are not 'light' and 'self aware'. You must be thinking of the Roger Moore films. @ 45:20 Not many people freaked out at the Jackman casting. Most people didn't know who he was, as you went onto mention. 'He changed everyone's mind'? Fact checker should get his shit together. If anyone has played the campaign of Star Wars: Battlefront II, where you play through the films from the view of the Clone/Storm Troopers, they'll know this, because the Clone narrator mentions this. I don't recall the exact reason or the exact period but Palpatine allows non-Clones into the Storm Troopers. Whether it's because of a failed mission or because of a lack of numbers, I don't recall. But this is why their numbers swell, yet their effectiveness goes down, because they're no longer all perfect soldiers. This is also why the troopers don't hit shit in the original trilogy. Or, well, how they've explained it. Now, I know the Expanded Universe is no longer canon, but there being a black Storm Trooper should not be a big deal, because it was possible before this trailer just as well. Heck, maybe there wasn't even a white Storm Trooper on the entire fucking Death Star, we don't know?

In the mainstream X-Men gets the cred for starting the comic book movie craze, but I feel Blade, a very underrated movie, is the one that startet it all. Maybe not in the minds of mainstream audiences, but in the minds of studios and producers. They saw that this superhero action worked. In a way I guess one should also credit The Matrix a little bit for helping. And: To say that the movie The Wolverine did nothing to the franchise is a typical argument from someone who simply wants action and spectacle. What The Wolverine adds to his character that is relevant to his storyarch is getting over Jean Grey, and actually giving Logan a wish to rejoin the world and not be a recluse with a deathwish.

THat lightsaber is impractical. Guards like that are used for catching an enemy blade, which that wouldn't do because of the small place between the blades. 2 to keep you from grabbing the blade, that will just cut out the middle man of cutting off your fingers. The only use it could be would be to spike an enemy with it, but your more likely to hurt yourself than to be put into a position where spiking the enemy is an option.

Storm troopers aren't actually clones. The clones were all but killed off after revenge of the sith, the storm troopers are all conscripted solders. Regular people who signed up to join the imperial military. The only remaining clones are the 501st, The elite devision, but they are not featured in any movies

Maybe the sith's lightsabre is powered by the force, but he isn't properly trained in the force or his personal emotions limit his control over it, so this makes the side vents necessary to to keep the blade running and semi stable. I think this is plausible because the blade itself looks like shit is flying of of it and it's not crisp, clear and perfectly straight like a jedi's sabre. Just my speculations.

Okay, so now I know the "crossguard" is the same beam...that would now bring up one new problem. The original problem is that it is just horribly dangerous. Now that danger factor is doubled with the new knowledge: Since the beam is splitting off, it obviously need an emitter (the metal that sticks out) to focus the blade (crystal turn the power from fuel cell to battery into the plasma beam, not the blade itself) does that mean if the metal is cut, even if it's not all the way though, the plasma would either superheat and explode...or....become an unfocused beam "spraying" in that general direction. The best possible outcome would be that it short circuits the saber and disable it.

@Fortstorm

Anakin Skyobiliviator Lightsabers are built by the user. Force-users use their power to aid them in the use of a lightsaber. Sure it's dangerous, but if you know how to use it it isn't dangerous for you.

@AnakinSkyobiliviator 9 жыл бұрын
***** While that is true, the lightsaber construction also allow you to consider how effective is the weapon. The double-bladed is mostly ineffective at close combat, the curved are made to parry and not stab. This version seems to be used for a wide sweeping motion. Even in the hands of those used to the weapon, the weapon will have hindrances of their own. I guess we have to wait until the movie show us how it *actually* going to be used.
