The way you're using the gyro isn't how it's meant to be used. It doesn't react to moving the controller, but to tilting and rotating it, like a steering wheel but in all three rotations... It's a bit of an issue with gyro, people new to gyro are split about 50/50 on which one is intuitive, some people naturally want to tilt the controller while others naturally want to move it around. Gyro to joystick is also very different from gyro to mouse. It's only meant to be used with games that don't allow simultaneous mouse and controller inputs (you either have to map gyro to joystick or the stick, triggers and buttons to keyboard keys) and it has lots of issues like contending with maximum stick deflection, built-in stick acceleration and added input delay. I don't know why gyro to mouse didn't show up this time but did in the previous video, but Valve have been working on a new gyro to mouse mode to replace their old one, so which one shows up depends on if you're in the steam beta program or not... As you can probably guess from all the settings, gyro input isn't as explored as other types of input and there's no fixed consensus on the best defaults yet, so you just get all the settings available to you.

Thanks for the additional gyro tests! It answered a lot of my questions. Pro tip from a gyro user: you should avoid joystick emulation as much as possible. Unfortunately, Bethesda RPGs all lock input to controller so joystick was pretty much the only option for FNV. Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal are much better games for testing gyro (especially gyro to mouse). Another tip: for steady aim, we tend to rest the controller on our laps. Also, aiming isn't by moving the controller in space. It's more about rotation. Imagine its mounted like a turret and you're aiming it around a pivot point. Kinda like that carnival game where you squirt water into a clown's mouth lol.
@InterstellarLord4 ай бұрын
I dont know what you have gotten answered since he is using gyro wrong. Gyro is not waving the controller in the air (maintaining it basically pointing in the same direction), Gyro is tilting, rotating, yaw-ing and pitching.

it is not hte only option. you can remap the controller to keyboard keys to get gyro as mouse. also theire is one controller that makes joystick gyor great. the xim nexus. it has convigs for alot of games. the convig learns the game mechanics and then aplies filters to the aim curve to make it linear, it also mitigates the deadzones that each game has (Every game has different setting). the only thing the xim nexus cant change is the limited turn speed of the analog camera. if you turn the controller faster then the maximum turn speed the camera will slow down. so mouse gyro is prefered when available.

Press all the way, but squeeze the trigger. The analogue sensitivity is based on *PRESSURE* sensitivity. It's based on how hard you squeeze it after the digital button (reverse dual-stage). Read the dang manual lol, it's all in the brochure that comes with the controller.

The way gyro behaves on cable is how it should be. I have tested this, the reason it's bad wireless is the steam deck itself. Gyro is actually unusable on deck's internal Bluetooth, it seems a tiny bit better on extremal bluetooth adapter connected to a dock but is only really usable wired currently. Hopefully a steam deck update will fix this, or perhaps a hori firmware update if that's a thing. On PC the gyro is the same wired and wireless.

Thanks for the update, super helpful to know the weight and that the issue was a BT one. Someone told me it's actually a SteamDeck BT issue, PC BT doesnt stutter apparently. The joystick gyro you used is not usually recommended unless theres no other option as it's limited on fast movements. Also the roll contribution should be set to 0, i thought that was default sorry. In terms of how you are using the gyro, a couple tips, the local space i told you to set, that is for twisting the controller right and left, the way you were moving the controller you would probably benefit more from either world space or laser space. Not asking for another update, just in case you wanted to try gyro to actually play a game, Hori controller or Steam Deck. This is one of the challenges with gyro, it has a barrier to entry, the options are needed, but its overwhelming for new people to look at and default options are not the best for new people. Don't some gyro players use high sense? I watch the TF2 controller video by Solarlight and he seems to like high sense. I think.
@aboveaveragebayleaf92164 ай бұрын
@LandenL yeah, so the standard measurement of sensitivity for gyro is rws(real world sensitivity) which is the multiplier added to the actual angle you turn the controller. I would recommend starting with a rws of 4, so 45°=180° in game. Then put the vertical sensitivity scale at 50%. This will give you good range of motion, but that vertical sensitivity reduction will help with steadiness. People do absolutely use higher sensitivities though. I think up to something like rws 20. A lot of people also use acceleration so it gives them a more slow and steady sensitivity for the slow precision aiming, but they also get the wide range of motion for the high sensitivity. There's a channel call Bjgobbledix that plays cod and other popular shooters on ps5 with acceleration. He pretty much never uses the right stick anymore. For a newcomer, you might want to try gyro activation when you touch the capacitive right stick. To me it transfers pretty smoothly as if you are setting a mouse down and lifting it up to reset. Try not to fight the gyro with the right stick, use it as the primary aiming method and use the stick just for general looking around.

@@LandenL yeah I’ve heard evangelists from the church of gyro sing its praises for a while and I thought it was just a gimmick. I follow a KZbin channel where the guy uses gyro on steam deck. I hated playing shooters on deck cause I usually prefer mouse and keyboard. My mind changed when I saw a video of a guy wrecking a mouse and keyboard using gyro playing in a counterstrike 1v1. I decided I would take the plunge and watch a bunch of tutorials and learn it by playing Selaco on admiral difficulty. After the 2-3 hours it takes to get used to, there is no going back. Gyro is dramatically better for shooting once you stop fighting it and take the time to learn it. It’s easy to learn too cause you still can use the stick for large movements then use the gyro for headshot adjustments. It’s much closer to mouse and keyboard level aim that I thought. I highly recommend you take a sip of the gyro koolaid
@tonkahanah58904 ай бұрын
gyro to joystick almost never works right and I pretty much never use it in anything. Gyro to mouse is really the only setting worth using 99% of the time. you're also moving it in a weird way. it really works better with smaller tilting movements, primarily tilting up and down. analog sticks are fine for the horizontal movement but they struggle with the vertical movements. Its why so many console shooters redesigned everything to remove a lot of verticality in their map/game play design. The gyro help compensate for this by making the up and down movements very fluid. Nintendo has been trying to sell this idea to their users for years now but some of their games hard restrict the gyro movement to only up and down. Gyro usage via the steam controller settings is a bit more free so when shifting to up and down you also move a little left and right so it doesnt feel so locked and restricted but you wouldnt usually use left and right heavily for large movements.

For some reason I seem to have the best results from Gyro as Joysfick on my handheld PCs, tho it may be coincidental. Both my Steam Deck and ROG Ally have had pretty good Gyro as joystick, but I had noticeably worse results when using my DualSense for gyro as joystick. I also should probably specify that I managed my ROG Ally gyro via Armoury Crate (not Steam Input) but Steam Deck & Dualsense were via Steam Input I wonder if the wider layout plays a role in making Gyro as Joystick better on handheld PCs? Gyro as mouse does seem to be much more consistent in working more evenly with all 3 controllers just as you excellently explained. I would like to see how this Hori Steam controller gyro compares to the dualsense as it seems to be similar to my dualsense experience via gyro as a joystick specifically.

@maratnugmanov4 ай бұрын
Asked to test gyro to mouse. Tests gyro to joystick instead, complains about stick axial deadzones 😁 Thanks for the video 👍 This is why people buy things like Xim Matrix - this thing corrects all of it. For example if a game has forced deadzone of 20% and you are moving 1% then Xim translates it to 21%. Same with axial deadzones that will ignore slight vertical movements when you move mostly horizontally - Xim just adds the threshold needed for the exact small movement. So most people buy these to use their mouse and benefit from aim assists. Honestly Fallout 4 is not the worst experience with raw gyro to stick. Another problem would be the low cap of turn speed because you can only go as fast as the stick itself unlike the mouse that no matter how low your sensitivity is, as long as you have a big enough desk to slide you can move it at absurdly gast speeds, you just need to travel more. Some games even add acceleration to the input so the longer you hold a stick in a specific position the faster it goes. This is just cringe.
@LandenL4 ай бұрын
Yeah, showing gyro to stick as the first clip was a mistake 😭. I've never heard of the xim matrix before. Seems like a magic black box for controller compatibility. I don't think I am ready to dive into that niche... Yet. But I will definitely try to use gyro more (with proper settings)
@maratnugmanov4 ай бұрын
@@LandenL just keep in mind that when emulating stick all kind of developer tweaks may apply. In the best case scenario like say The Finals or Fortnite you can set stick deadzone to 0, axial deadzones x/y to 0, apply linear acceleration curve etc. But it's very rare.

those triggers seem better to me than xbox or ps5 triggers. having a lot of travel on a controller intended for a lot of PC games ends up being a pain, especially if you're using gyro a lot. Driving games seem to be the primary reason any one really wants/needs analog triggers. One of the reasons I typically use the bumper buttons on ps4/5 controller for things like primary fire in a first person shooter is to avoid the analog nature and all the extra travel of the triggers. The extra travel on the triggers tends to result in additional unwanted gyro movement. This was something valve found to be the case and even has a setting in the software for gyro dampening when pressing the triggers. I find this software too restrictive to serve its purpose though so I dont use it and just choose to set the bumper to primary fire than the trigger. I still miss the original steam controllers bumpers and triggers, they were the the best of both worlds, travel and clicking.

The triggers seem someway between a force sensor, where the button remains fixed and only pressure is recorded, and a traditional one. Coming from simming this is akin to a FSSB stick, though there no fineness over the input here I guess? Though I'm not giving Valve or the controller manufacturer such credit so far. Does it feel good is the question, there's no way it should feel in the slightest bit plasticky or mushy with the user feeling like you'll break something internally when you apply more pressure. I used the mechanical fixed trigger for breaking in Redout 2 on a Gulikit KK3 for example, it didn't last long at all. I've repaired it with replacements, but it wasn't made for constant pressure to be applied as there were latches made of plastic. I'll have to look for a teardown, aye.

I used Bluetooth but it includes a dongle. But I don't know if the dongle is regular Bluetooth or 2.4gz. if HE means Hall effect, I doubt it but I couldn't find specs on the product page.

Actually these controllers not that bad. I dont like the wireless gyro. maybe they fix it with an update if they can. And i didnt like colours either. Maybe white or black be better. Other than that design is not ugly and on the steam software they even add controllers shape layout. With steam input i think its ok. I still prefer original steam controller btw i still using it
@LandenL3 ай бұрын
Using a cable the gyro is great! And they have white and black colors on their website. I just green because it was funny. I picked purple because I thought it would look like the gamecube. But the purple is a little too bright. I've never used the OG steam controller, but I have a brand new one in box back in the U.S.

Real shame about the triggers. I was thinking about getting this due to the native steam input support for the extra buttons. Oh well. I have an actual steam controller anyway plus several other controllers for different use cases

Gyro work like that bcs of its emulating stick in Bethesda game and that's mean it's complete garbage where stick can't "draw" circle. It's not controller fault.

A lot of people get a hard on for Hori. Most of the products I’ve tried from them always feel really cheaply made. The only product I’ve loved that they’ve made was my MH: Double Cross N3DS grip they made.
@LandenL4 ай бұрын
This being my first product, I didn't hate it. I feel like they did an OK job of implementing the Steam Decks control scheme. But you can definitely tell where they cut corners to keep the price down. (no rumble, no trackpads, awkward triggers)
@jamesalexhowlett4 ай бұрын
@@LandenL technically speaking, the original steam controller and steam deck don’t have rumble. They have haptic feedback. I’m surprised the new controllers don’t.

Meh, its wierd controller. I know the original was too crazy for 10s people. But you know, i bought original controller and i know it's not perfect 10/10 gamepad (like Dualshock4, Xbox), but it's good like 7/10. Yeah one stick, wierd crossbuttons, but hey, do you remember the sound of connection? Its so electric and quite. And after all original have trackpad, like Steam Deck. With this guys i completed Doom3. Its strange controller, but sometimes very good. And this one new controller? Just a gamepad with gyro(like original btw), and what?
@zacnyss4 ай бұрын
I have the impression that you are negative about this pad from the very beginning. In addition, you criticize steam input without knowing how to use it, the way you tested the gyroscope I won't even mention. You can also adjust the sensitivity of the triggers, this pad has the ability to switch between analog and digital triggers, the sensitivity and trigger activation threshold can be adjusted in steam input. Remember that this pad was created just to make 100% use of the possibilities that steam input provides.
@LandenL4 ай бұрын
My opinion: User's shouldn't have to fix the controller in settings, especially in the Japanese market, where the Nintendo Switch/PlayStation is king. Those two console are "it just works" systems. But I am sure most PC users can find uses for this controller. I am mostly negative about this controller because you can get better value by just buying a PS5 controller.

@@LandenL btw, how did you get this controller? The scheduled release is set for October 31th

I live in Japan right now. So I was able to simply buy it from their website. Other people mention buying it secondhand on ebay, but I wouldn't spend more than retail price imo.

@@LandenLthe problem with this is that you really can't make it work straight out of box because of the nuances in controls that every game has. Steam, and the PC platform as a whole, has mostly one unified control scheme for FPS, which is WASD + Mouse. Most games when made for steam only really take account the keyboard and mouse control scheme. By using steam input, you can modify the controls how much you want, allowing you to have a personal and unified control scheme for almost all games. Steam Input also allows you to play controller on keyboard/mouse only games. The "modifiable" aspect of PC gaming in general, and PC culture really revolves around the use of modifications to make games and applications as modifiable as possible to make a personalized control scheme and environment.
@chizbreds17174 ай бұрын
I personally use a modified flickstick control scheme for my FPS games. It is a mix of gyro and joystick for aiming. Not everyone would like that control scheme, but it would be impossible for me to use flick stick without the use of Steam Input and other controller drivers.
