Hello, I apologize for the delay in responding, but I need to clear up this misconception. This statement is false for two reasons. 1) Self esteem is not always associated with depression. A individual can love themself yet be depressed at the same time. 2) He buries his insecurities, throws on a facade, and counterfeits contentment to persuade people that he's doing well. How am I so certain he is insecure? He exemplifies this by consistently overworking himself in volleyball and refusing to practice in moderation. Consider it. If he was so “confident” about his abilities, why would he overwork himself to the point of suffering a long-term, potentially chronic, knee injury? That’s the problem: he isn’t. He does this because he believes he is not good enough and inferior in comparison to Kageyama and Ushijima. The allusion to the so-called "confidence” you're perceiving is a defense mechanism. How am I so certain he is depressed? In one episode, Iwaizumi remarks that his smiles are ingenuine and that he would never experience true happiness, even when he is an old man. We discover that Oikawa is not the "happy" and "positive" individual he led us to believe he was (which is not surprising given his mental instability). Not only that, but throughout the manga's timeline changes, Oikawa develops a loss of interest and pleasure in volleyball (before he starts competing again). And what are the primary signs of depression? Loss of interest or pleasure in previously enjoyed activities. Simply put, the man is insecure and depressed (or emotionless at the least). Hence, we're not suggesting it's toxic to portray him as depressed, since he already is depressed. We're suggesting that the fandom portrays him as OVERLY depressed. For instance, they will instill in him suicidal and self-harming tendencies (cutting, smoking, drinking, etc). I apologize for ruining the humor and the lengthy message, but I wanted you to be aware. In no way do I condone the fandom's conduct. Thank you.
