Hey! If you want to grab of of these beasts check out the following links. Also I have a few corrections! Firstly, I mention in the video that this is a SB 2.0 when it is actually a SB 1.5. This card also doesn't support the 44hkz sample rate, it is actually 22khz. In reality this will make very little difference when it comes to DOS gaming anyways but I thought I should let everyone know! I wrote tracker music under Mental Floss of KFMF (Kosmic Free Music Foundation, formerly KLF) using a GUS and used two of them on two computers to play shows at raves. A song of mine was also included on the GUS CD (in a information and promotion video they created) that Gravis included with every sound card after the first generation of GUS cards. So I'm definitely curious about the GUS clone. Long live the GF1 chip.

I think I'll get one to replace my original Sound Blaster 8-bit card in my Tandy 1000 TX. The original still works, but I think it is more valuable as a collector's item. I'd hate for the Tandy to burn it up and render it worthless...

The Tandy 1000 is such a cool series of computers. This card would be a nice fit for it.

Never had the original, I had the original Adlib at the time, Creative Soundblaster was too expensive, but later I got the GUS MAX as a Christmas gift. That was a cool card, but I missed the OPL FM synth. Later got AWE64 gold a a whole shitload of crappy soundblasters that came after that, like the Live! and Audigy series, but they were never novelty products and became obsolete very quick as I resorted to more professional external audio devices for making music. Now I'm building a Pentium II system for some oldskool dos games, best time of my life. I just ordered one of these clone cards, I can't wait to test it out!

Love the intro 😂 .. David does really nice work. Really amazing to see these reproductions and other modern ISA cards coming out now. The original parts are getting so hard to find. Great choice of games. The music from the first Tyrian map is so good. Will hopefully be getting this card along with the GUS clone in the coming weeks. Really looking forward to trying them out 👍

That is pretty dam cool. A replica of my very first sound card. I still have it. Installed in a 386. Which is the oldest a system I still have. This replica would be better because it's a slimline chassis so everything is cramped in there. I love that people are recreating these old parts and keeping the tech alive.

@@DOSStorm I don't think any of us back then imagined that would be happening. Even in wildest dreams. Of course noone foresaw rise of the internet either. Or so many technological innovations. It's great to look back and for sure it gives an appreciation of what we have now versus back in the days. A thriving retro scene is mostly a win for everyone. I hate seeing it become so expensive that it puts people off. For sure projects like these are a very good thing.

$100 for something that's custom made for such a niche market is very cheaply priced. Small orders of custom PCBs isn't cheap for them. I'm sure months went into research and playing with breadboards to get everything working well. Maybe even some custom firmware. Then designing the PCB, acquiring the ICs, negotiating with fabs, testing samples, inventory, shipping, etc. It isn't a quick buck.

$100 for a custom recreated vintage card completely assembled? That's a great price. If I was collecting retro hardware I would totally snag one, but I'd have nothing that it would work in so I'll let others buy it up.

Just as I was battling with my noisy half functioning Ct1350B to compose some songs for my next vid, I see your video. Great info, really appreciated. Now, if only I could find some software like Sequencer Plus that would let me access all the sounds of the SAA1099 chips ( with a midi keyboard ) other than using the CMS Organ program, which is noisy and very limited.
@klausschmidt982
@klausschmidt982 Жыл бұрын
I really enjoy the CMS but you are right software for it is quite limited. I was actually thinking of doing something about it but I am not very knowledgeable when it comes to writing audio software so I would have a lot to learn on the way if I really want to go on with this project idea. Could you give me like an idea what I have to look out for so people might actually want to use whatever I might potentially cook up in the future?

Cool video! 100% agree on your take so much of this stuff is becoming unobtainable, you can't count on just bumping on a sound card like this on a random PC and finding one cheap miss listed is almost as difficult. 100$ may seems like a crazy amount of money but I rather invest it on something like this than take my chances on ebay for an used/abused one for even a larger amount of money. Thanks. Love your unique style!
@DOSStorm

Thanks for watching. I agree. eBay can definitely be a mixed bag for used cards, but honestly it still works out most the time. Makes you wonder how long they will last in the long term though.

Very entertaining as always😄👍 The replica is awesome. I appreciate Dave's dedication he put into these projects. (Sourcing the legacy ICs and don't get screwed by suspicious chinese wholesalers surely is challenging, too. I know because I tried to get working legacy eproms once:-) Therefore the price is absolutely fair, imo.

Thanks. Yeah I'm looking forward to trying his GUS clone! I'm not sure where he sources the chips but finding the real chips has to be difficult these days. I imagine the OPL2/3 isn't too hard to find but the AMD interwave is probably pretty rare.

In dosbox for phnes the default sb was sb2, and the phone coul not do better.the sound card upgraded itself to sb 16, and doesn't stress the system, the sound quality became better.

The problem with this thing is that it uses the original chips. That's nice, but soon enough those will be just as unobtainable as the original cards. Same for the Gus. I'm happy that these products exist, but i am much more enthusiastic about the picogus. Which uses the pi pico to emulate several Isa sound card, most importantly the Gus. It might not be perfect, but even if the pico disappeared, the software could be ported to a new chip. That makes it far better in continued availability.
@DOSStorm
@DOSStorm Жыл бұрын
That is a fair point. Does make you wonder how many of these old chips are still floating around. I will have to look into the picogus more, sounds like an interesting project.
@bzuidgeest
@bzuidgeest Жыл бұрын
@@DOSStorm for some chips many. As they get more valuable they are hoarded. And that ain't good for prices. There is also an industry for reclaiming them from old electronics. People are asking for them enough to make them valuable enough to fake. Hopefully it will get better as more chips get FPGA re-implementations. Things like FPGA sid have been around forever. But there is also a project to recreate every Amiga 500 special chip. FPGA are small enough to fit inside the larger Dil packages.

What I really want is one of these cards, but designed as PCIe x1 so I can enjoy the FM MIDI on a modern PC. I need Windows XP and Windows 7 drivers if they were to design it. I would love a Soundblaster 16 Vibra version too! Vibras are my favorite 16's because of the nice treble in their MIDI. Something Like a Soundblaster 16 CT2940 would be perfect!

I think the issue with something like that is that DOS games require a motherboard with an addressable DMA. I think that is also the reason modern industrial motherboards that have ISA slots won't work well for DOS games and stuff.

Imagine if some day they make one for PCI-E and write modern drivers to have OLP on a new PC and OS
@DOSStorm
@DOSStorm Жыл бұрын
I'm no expert but I think It could work in conjunction with DOSBOX-X, and I believe there is at least one USB OPL3 thing on the market for that. To work in native DOS it would need support for assignable DMAs though and I think most DOS games wouldn't know how to handle it running on PCI-E. The idea is very cool on paper though and maybe its possible with some custom drivers or compatibility layer or something.

Honestly I expected it to cost *more* than $100 for this specific kinda thing. Custom hardware is pricy, used stuff is getting more and more dicey every day AND it's going up in price, so $100 for something that actually works? If I was building actual hardware stuff I'd for sure go with this
