I trained my heeler in my cedar pack boat and moved on to kayaking, he's perfectly centered in any conditions even surf.

I'm using a Swift 14ft Prospector pack boat, which works great for my Algonquin trips because it's nice and light but just being out there is good in any boat!

@@jaysway2346 I have the pack boat version and you went without the two tone (saving two pounds I think). Still they should be essentially the same! :) I've been playing with a 360 as well and while it gives you way more options it's still possible to miss the shot ! :)

Brilliant! I pick up my pup this week (beginning of June) and hope to start training in a month or so, hoping for fall outings. I was thinking of trying to use my swimming pool to get the pup used to the movement....I like the swing idea....Hmmm, maybe a hammock would work.

Not sure how much she weighs but you might want to try her in the back of the canoe. Easier to steer. Just subbed.

Great to see your approach to getting Scout to accept the Pro 14. Just curious, might you share any insight on using a Swift Pack Cruiser 14.8 versus the wider Pro 14? I'm considering to purchase a 14.8 and it is noticeably narrower than the Pro 14. My dog Connor (Wire-haired Pointing Griffon) which will likely accompany me on some trips, is trained on my Pro 17' and he knows his spot much like Scout.

I only tried the Pro 14 and not only is it wider but there is more center depth as well. I also like to fish with the dog in the canoe, so the Pro 14 has good stability if Scout starts moving around. Pro 14 will be much slower than the 14.8. I would also point out that I have the duo seat option but have always been using the lower seat setting for more stability. There both good choice's but you might find a noticeable difference going from a Pro 17 to Pro 14.8 in the beginning. Swift does offer test paddle's on the water if you're close. Hope you and Connor find what you're looking for!

You have done a great job with your dog! I have been working with her on place and "in" and "out" of a big box while we wait. I am considering the same boat for my 52-pound lab mix in the pack version. Do you have any regrets about the boat?

Thanks, Susan. After getting in a few trips last year, I have no regrets with the boat. The pack boat is perfect for the kind of trips I go on, it's light enough for portages and yet stable enough to carry Scout at 60lbs and all my gear. Also, the lower seat position/kayak seat adds some stability on the water just in case a dog starts to move around. Thanks for watching!

I have a 70L dry bag that I plan to put behind the seat, with a 28L bag between my legs and 45LB dog in the front. The bags will fit just haven't tested paddling on the water with that weight distribution.

Why does your dog need a life vest?

A few reason's... handle to lift out of the water, more visible on land or in the water, helps secure gopro fetch harness, first step to wearing a loaded backpack. Hope that helps.
