The big boys of broadcasting, TV masts of immense proportions, Emley moor mast can be received as far away as Germany under lift conditions, and vice versa. And yes Holme moss used to carry TV back in the 405 lines UK tv era! Thanks for sharing this Lewis.🙂👍

Let’s hope that the Temporary Mast doesn’t collapse like the similar metal structure did in 1969!!

Good to see Emley Moor again, I used to live not too far away in Wakefield and remember being taken up there as a youngster on day drives. It has a bit of a chequered history does that site, it had a few towers before the concrete one but they could never keep them in the air, the Northern climate got to them and felled them into a pile of scrap on more than one occasion.

Lovely, watching that paraglider with the mellow music made my heart rate drop. I'm well chilled now. I'm amazed the tower foundations are only 6 meters deep though! Thanks for taking the time and effort to make this :-)

Great Video, Nearly got a chance to go up the mast for RF training years ago when I worked for a company called Ionica. Also worked with a Rigger who updated the red lighting on the outside....Luck man to have that one under his belt. Very interesting..Thank you.

I remember the 1969 mast collapse well. Thankfully nobody was injured, and the whole of the coverage area had people frantically trying to tune in to ITV Tyne Tees, our in some cases, Granada from the over side of the Pennines! BBC 1 was still available from Holme Moss, of course, but only in the B & W 405 line standard. The richer people of Yorkshire who were splashing out 30 Shillings (£1.50) a week for their colour sets rented from Red Arrow, were really peeved not to be able to watch BBC 2 in glorious colour! It didn't take long for the IBA to find and erect a temporary 'mast' that looked like it was made out of scaffolding, but at around 50 feet high, yes that's 50 feet!, It didn't work too. That was soon replaced by a lattice mast of 600 feet, which served the region well while the concrete mast was built. I lived about 20 miles away from Emley Moore, and could clearly see the the new mast growing higher by the day.

I thought several people died when the steel guy ropes froze on Emley Moor, or was that a previous occasion? I know it was in the sixties at some point, though I was rather young at the time & didn't realize the gravity of the situation. (I'm sorry, I'll get my coat.....)
@richiehoyt84873 жыл бұрын
Thanks, interesting bit of history. I had actually wondered (if only in passing) how people 'coped' in the interim.
@NigelDixon19523 жыл бұрын
People were running around like headless chickens! First they'd look up to their roof....antenna still there. Ask next door 'erm..is your telly still on?' Then panic, the world's ending ending! But no, nobody died when Emley Moore fell down. If you go to the public viewing area, then look over the road, about 100 metres away there's a small chapel. A guy wire fell right through the middle of the roof. It's still possible to see the newer roof tiles with the original ones.

Any way you could arrange to do videos inside transmitter site buildings? I've seen a good few American ones but they seem to be all but not a thing in the UK.
@malcolmpedley31914 жыл бұрын
The last one like this fell down, not wind but Ice which made it top heavy. The replacement was built in concrete and from the top it will be magnificent view but only in Yorkshire would they build this but forgot a restaurant which every other tower in the world has. You could charge what you wanted for a meal with such a view especially on the low cloud days when the top is looking down at them.

They'd want a lot of guy lines to be fair, at the very least to ease local concerns about the safety of such insallations considering what happened in the sixties to a similarly constructed mast.
