First Wildcamp of 2023
I rode out on mt "On One" Bootzipper adventure bike to experience a wonderful Wildcamping adventure using the Wild Country Helm 1 Compact.
First time I've used this tent and I am very happy with how it performed.
The tent seems very well thought out and was very stable in gusty conditions though I was careful to select a sheltered spot to pitch.
I camped in ancient landscape unchanged since Neolithic times and practiced "Leave No Trace". I pitched late and left early.
I hope you enjoy my first Wild Camp of the New Year.
Music used was all from the KZbin Audio Library
Fruits of life- jimena Contrera's
The Empty Moons of Jupiter- DivKid

I'd struggle to get my Brompton to do a trip like this Miriam, definately an MTB ride. I'm very pleased with the tent, a wise purchase. Maybe not quite as well built as your Hilleberg though but Dave (Border Rambler) sold his Akto to buy a Helm compact 1 : ) Happy New Year Sandy

@@WiltshireMan Not a chance the Brompton could negotiate that mud without numerous falls 😀 Yeah I saw Dave sold his Akto and bought the Helm 1 - it definitely seems to be a good buy! I'm 5'8'' so the Akto isn't too bad for me. A few nights on the trot locked up in it wouldn't be pleasant but I'll be keeping it for now anyway 🙂 You made a great purchase!!

Nice to see someone out, about and enjoying themselves - up here on the Fylde Coast its been nonstop rain 24/7 since Christmas - everywhere is saturated! In awe of the effort required to lift that capstone 5000 yrs ago, even today it would be a challenge, the tomb must have been for someone very special, shame it was despoiled, so much knowledge lost. Still checking daily for those Classics.

Happy New Year Sandy. That is an amazing place you camped at. Looks like there was something substantial there once, now laid flat by time. I do think there was marks from wedges in the top of that split stone. Harder to say when that happened. I like that tent, seemed like the light reflected nicely inside from your little lantern and it was nice and dry.

I love all your Videos Sandy but I feel this one is extra special.Ancient Wiltshire is heaven on Earth to me. There is just something hard to describe about being in this sacred landscape. Maybe in our own past lives we were part of this landscape . Who knows but, it does something very deep in my soul. It feels like we are connecting to our past. My late Mother felt the same way too. She was born near Marlborough and used to visualize Roman Soldiers Marching across the Downs as a child. Thank you so much for these videos. I feel we are old friends.

Happy New Year Sandy. Intersting to get your thouights on the Helm1 as I did use one on my recent WHW hike and it perfermed well for th money. Easy to setup and my only issue was the inner tent length. I was using a thick 9cm mat but as I am only 5' 10" my head and feet were just touching the inner at both ends. Did have a lot of condensation inside but it was heavy rain and snow but overall in the better weather it looks like a pretty good budget tent for the wildcamping. Atb and good health for 2023.

Hi Ray I was really pleased with the tent, I think for the money it's almost or possibly is a 4 season tent but I would choose my pitch carefully. Always best to find a sheltered spot if you can:) Yes inner tent length is a bit tight, I used a Neoair and head and feet not quite touching the inner. Happy New year. Hi Deano, I prefer to go through Chiseldon, past the Patriot arms then pick up the lower Ridgeway and follow it all the way down to Herepath (Green path) from there you turn left and your straight into Fyfield down

We’ll done Sandy! It’s easy to go camping in good weather, you’ve proved it’s just as easy to go camping in the rain, cold and inclement weather, love your transport!! Doing what it was made for. Keep safe. P

Thanks P, I do enjoy bad weather camping, I find it relaxing and also fewer people are about. That suits me :)

I did look at that Helm 1 and for a 1 or 2 night camp, its a good option, but for serious multi day hikes of a week or more, its weight & bulk is just too much, in my opinion, for long distance backpacking.

Yes it is a bit on the heavy side but I would use it only for Winter when your maybe not going to be hiking as far. It weighs in around 4lb and with the solid inner means your draught free and cosy

Hi Sandy. I was drawn to your video by its title. I am also a Helm Compact1 owner, and like it more every time I use it. You made the wise decision to get the footprint ( I didn't). Your video is very easy to watch, and its a delight to see your cooking. Fair play to pitch where you did, I would be imagining all sorts if Id pitched there, I would be hearing all those ancient folk moving around at night👻. Hope that 2023 is good to you. Take care 👍

Thanks Andrew, yes the footprint was a wise buy. As for the ghosts, they must have all been blown away by the wind :)

First of the year, eh? Thanks for sharing, Mr. Wiltshire. And thanks for reminding me that I need to get to Fyfield Down whilst I'm still able. Can't imagine what wild camping in such a spot might be like. Well done you. Thought to be the 'supplies source' for Avebury, I think? And oh - that 'split' stone? It seemed to me that your footage showed some wedge 'witness marks'. Man's work, I'd say.

I'd say mans work to Barry. Fyfield down is a beautiful place, I'm glad the stones have stayed put, I guess there were more scattered further afield but probably cleared and broken up to make buildings
