Hello neighbor! 😊 It seems this time of year (May - June) is a fun time in our gardens here. Everything is lush and growing like crazy before the onslaught of our Texas summer heat. We are 90s now, but hopefully we will just stay in the low - mid 90s. (Wishful thinking?! 😀😉)

Its amazing those swallowtail cats have survived! The mockingbirds get mine! I do bring some in a small enclosure to try to get them to butterflies! Your garden is so lush and beautiful!

That is wonderful you protect some of your caterpillars so they can reach adulthood! I used to have 2 outdoor enclosures and I would save my monarch and eastern black swallowtail butterfly eggs so they could grow into adulthood. Well, I have stopped that now because critters (either opossums or rats I think) ate through the thick mesh and ate all the chrysalises. Also two years in a row fire ants would get into the enclosure and eat out the chrysalises. I have now come to believe that they have a better chance "out in the wild" in my garden than if I try to protect them. I hate that because I loved the caterpillars in the enclosures. 😕 Maybe I will try an enclosure at some point again, but this year they are doing their thing. 😊 I have found the more host plants I have of the same type, the better caterpillar survival rate I have. I have a lot of fennel this year, and it is really thick (I think around 10 plants), so the caterpillars have lots of places to hide. And the butterflies lay lots of eggs on it too.

My plants here in Metropolitan Atlanta Georgia zone 8a or 8b are suffering from the humidity. Only the established garden of perrinal hibiscus &lime light hydrangeas &vitex chase shrubs are flourishing.

Once your new plants get established you should have more that do well in the heat and humidity. (I'm sure you are providing the supplemental water as needed too.) 😊

That is wonderful you also garden for pollinators, butterflies, and hummingbirds! I have a lot of Gulf Fritillaries, Pipevine Swallowtails, and Eastern Black Swallowtails at the moment (both caterpillars and butterflies). I also have 1-2 female hummingbirds. Butterflies are abundant right now. What are you seeing in your garden?

I have Caladium’s in my garden also. At the end of the growing season, I dig up my Caladium bulbs and store them in the garage. Replant the following year. I am in Zone 8 and the bulbs will not survive winter in the ground.

That is definitely the way to do it! I bet your caladiums get nicer every year too. Down here in zone 9b we are spoiled because some years we don't freeze. Other years we get just a light freeze and caladiums will come back each year for us in the ground. The last 3 years we have had hard freezes, and the caladiums have been spotty returning. So, I know I should dig them up, but I haven't yet. Maybe I will for this upcoming winter. 😊

You certainly have had lots of success this season. I tried planting some impatiens in shade this year that are supposed to be for shade & after 2 months they quit blooming even after using liquid fertilizer. Trimmed back but that did not work. Think I’m going back to colorful caladiums. Side note on cannas, you must trim off the whole bloom stalk after it finishes flowering to promote new growth. If not no new blooms will occur. But you can plant the seed pods for new cannas just suggest you soak the seeds in water to soften them up before planting

Thank you so much for the info on cannas! I will trim off the whole bloom stalk after it finishes flowering. I grew impatiens 3 years ago in the shade garden. I liked them, but they didn't "wow" me. I think caladiums have more of a "wow" factor. (And to think I didn't like caladiums in the past. 😂).

My hot lips are also barely blooming here in Houston even with recent rain. Same last year but I thought it was our triple digits and lack of rain. They have become my least favorite salvia.

I have to laugh at myself because I wanted Hot Lips last year and they were out, so I went early to the nursery this year and bought two. They aren't my favorite salvia now that I have had them for a bit. I like the smell of the foliage as it reminds me of my bush salvia. They aren't a great producer in our heat though. There are other salvia that do better in our summer heat. So, I'm kind of with you on this one. I will be interested to see what it does in the fall.

Have you planted Texas tea bush - Melochia? I don't recall whether you have mentioned this plant as a pollinator magnet that can handle the summer heat. Thank you for all your recommendations.

No, I haven't planted the Texas tea bush yet (Melochia tomentosa). When I looked it up it has a nice long blooming season ... the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center website shows it blooms from March - November. That is a wonderful bloomer!

Have you tried cuttings from the pipe vine as a way to get more plants, will it grow from cuttings?

My favorite nursery has told me they are difficult to start. They seem to now order them in because the last ones they started for me were not great. I haven't tried to propagate them.

Ha! I definitely don't have any magic touches! 😂 This plant has a taproot, so that is why I think it is difficult to propagate. The nursery I purchase it at has difficulty growing it.

Where did you find this pipe vine, I live by Beaumont and have never seen that before. Same as the Porterweed

I have a favorite nursery in the Houston area called Enchanted Gardens where I get a lot of my plants. They are in Richmond, which is a little south west of Houston. Enchanted Gardens regularly has porterweed, but will get in white-veined dutchman's pipevine every now and then. There is an online nursery out of Merryville, Louisiana called Almost Eden that ships plants. They have a lot of native plants to our area and unusual plants.

Betty's Bloomers in Silsbee had a lot of porterweed and dutchmans pipevine this spring, and many other great pollinator plants. I go there and Southern's Nursery for most of my plants.
